The regular season ends this week. In the Alomar Division, the six Championship bracket teams are virtually carved in stone, whereas ten teams separated by only seven games are fighting for six Consolation bracket spots. The top-level postseason bracket in Barfield is likewise almost fully decided. The Carter Division has the most entertaining battle for the Championship bracket. Both the Alomar and Barfield Divisions have one team guaranteed relegation, one nearly certain, and two other teams struggling to avoid the last demotion spot.

ALOMAR DIVISION:

Both the #1 Edmonton Decepticons and #2 Gashouse Gorillas blew out their competitors and strengthened their holds on the two Championship bracket first-round byes. Barring an extreme collapse by #6 Slippery Pete, the Championship bracket is set. While neither the #7 Chatsworth Halos and #9 Toronto Walrus lost much ground in the standings because of their resounding defeats, they did fall back into a morass of teams jockeying for placement in the Consolation bracket. Yes, morasses can jockey. A full ten teams will battle for the second-division playoffs this week.

At the other end, Jays Ehs’ tenure in Alomar will be limited to one year, and BBFL Original Member Eastern Shore Birds will join them until they make up a formidable eight games on the Thunderbirds. The final relegation spot will come down to either Schroedinger’s Bat, also in Alomar for the first time, or last year’s champion T-birds.

Gashouse Gorillas posted the second best roto week in Alomar history. My Austin Senators’ performance in Week 22 of 2003 still holds the title.

The roto stats get the week off in anticipation of next week’s end-of-regular-season stats bonanza.

BARFIELD DIVISION:

Magic 9 have lapped the field, guaranteeing advancement to Alomar in 2007 and the #1 seed in the Championship playoff bracket with one week to play. The tremendous battle for the other automatic advancement between the #2 Moscow Rats and #3 Pohnpei Papayas will conclude this week. The Rats will play the #15 Jicks Rays, and the Papayas draw last-place Pistol Nine. The loser of this contest will still most likely finish third, which holds the best chance for advancement outside the top two. The 1-Tool Wonders and Cooney Islanders have also assured themselves places in the Championship playoff. Team Junior Felix will join them unless they finish 0-12 and MulReduxMonkeymen shuts out the Angry Gnomes. Highly doubtful.

The Monkeymen, Baseball North, Sweaty Guys, Vancouver Cyphers and Burlington Mazsters are all very likely to make the Consolation playoff. The #12 Angry Gnomes have a smaller margin of error, but #13 Bodell’s Bashers drew the short straw and has to face Magic 9 in their hunt for the postseason. The Middleclass Elitists, Jick’s Rays and Lubumbashi Posse also still hold faint playoff hopes.

Pistol Nine will join the Carter Division next year, and any combination of losses by Dr. Z’s Hot Men and wins by the K-Town Mashers that adds to four will also relegate Dr. Z. The last relegation spot almost certainly will fall to the Mashers or European Wannabe, who placed himself in better position to survive by defeating Magic 9 7-5-0 last week.

CARTER DIVISION:

The Sexy Underpants have guaranteed placement in the BBFL’s Barfield Division in 2007 with a 9-2-1 victory over the Brock Crackaz. The ‘Pants can finish no worse than second in the regular season. #2 Chico’s Bail Bonds have a strong grip on the #2 spot, which also grants automatic advancement plus a first-round playoff bye. However, this week they must take on the #4 Shining Force, who spanked the @$$kickers 10-2-0. The #3 Wedding Singers must win resoundingly against the #6 BSL Blue Sox and hope for a weak Bonds performance in order to surpass them. The Singers have clinched a Championship playoff spot and will advance if any of the top three teams win the playoff. The Force are also very likely in the top bracket, while the other two spots will be fought over by the Blocked Youngsters, Blue Sox, and #7 New Jersey Stratuses. Three other teams have extremely thin chances for the Championship bracket.

The battle for the Consolation bracket remains remarkably tight, with not even the #7 Stratuses guaranteed postseason play. They will advance barring a disaster, and the Dangercats, Garth Iorg Gremlins and @$$kickers are also odds-on favorites. The final two spots should come down to the Trembling Wilburys, Benji’s Sister, Big Game Hunters, and longshot Hammie’s Rollies. Except for Team Balla, who is technically alive, the rest are playing for pride.
