A Healthy Wideman and a Speedy Snider Lead Lansing

A (hopefully) fully healthy Aaron Wideman demonstrated his prowess on the mound, while Travis Snider shows surprising speed, as the farm goes 2-1.

New Hampshire 6 @ New Britain 4 - Boxscore

With the Syracuse Chiefs having an off day Friday before their home opener against Ottawa, this minor league update starts in New Hampshire. As several posters in yesterday’s minor league update thread pointed out, Jesse Litsch got off to a rough start surrendering 2 runs in the bottom of the first. It would have been three if Wayne Lydon hadn’t thrown out Brian Buscher at home plate. In the top of the second the Fisher Cats scored four to give Litsch a 4-2 lead and he settled down, allowing one run over the next 5 innings. He finished with 3 runs in 6 innings, for a quality start, and struck out 4 without allowing a walk. Litsch got 10 groundball outs and 4 fly outs.

New Hampshire had more hits than walks on the evening. The team had 8 hits, 3 of which were by Manny Mayorson. They also received 9 free passes and scored two of those runners. The 3-4-5 hitters for the Fisher Cats put up an 0-for. Special mention goes to Chip Cannon’s 0-5 performance with 5 strikeouts for the first golden sombrero in the Jays organization this year (hat tip to Matthew E and Afterglow). Mayorson went 3-5 with 2 runs and John Schneider and Dustin Majewski demonstrated their fine pitch selection, drawing 5 walks between the two of them. Lee Gronkiewicz went 1.2 scoreless innings with 2 strikeouts for his second save of the year.

Dunedin 6 @ Fort Myers 7 - Boxscore

The hot bats of Whitney Robbins and Erik Lis combined for all 7 of Fort Myers’ RBIs as they defeated Dunedin 7-6. I covered Robert Ray’s start for the second time in a row, but this time he went 5 innings, giving up 4 earned runs on 6 hits. Dunedin reliever Edgar Estanga entered the game in the bottom of the 7th with Dunedin leading 6-4 and failed to record an out. He allowed an inherited runner to score on a single and then surrendered a home run that put Fort Myers ahead 7-6. Notable offensive performers for Dunedin were Jacob Butler, 2-4 with a HR, 2 R, 2 RBI and a BB, and Cory Patton 2-5 with a 2B and 3B, 2 RBI and a run. Brian Jeroloman hit his first home run of the season, too.

Lansing 6 @ Great Lakes 2 - Boxscore

Aaron Wideman gave up 2 runs, only one earned, over 5.1 innings with 8 strikeouts in his first start of the year. Notable in relief was Seth Overbey, with 3 strikeouts over 2 innings. The Lugnuts had 11 hits on the night, but only one starter had more than one, and that was the one and only Travis Snider. Snider went 4-5 with a 3B, 2 R and 1 RBI and is now 7-15 on the season. The key hit of the game was Chris Gutierrez’s two-out two-run single in the top of the second that drove home Lansing’s second and third run of the ballgame. This game also featured two Josh Bell’s at 3B, as Lansing’s catcher got the start at 3B. He outperformed his more heralded rival, despite being picked off second, as he went 1-4 with a 2B, BB and RBI.

Glad to see Jacob Butler rebounding this year in Dunedin. I had high hopes for him after his strong performance in Auburn in 2005, after he was an 8th round draft choice out of Nevada.

Thanks Dino. That scoreboard makes the stadium look even better, the Fisher Cats stadium must be one of the nicest in baseball.

You're welcome Gerry. I find myself very fortunate to have been hired by the Fisher Cats as the manual scoreboard operator. I owe thanks to two people. Mike Murphy (Fisher Cats radio voice) for hooking me up with Kristin Beernick (Director of Marketing & PR) who hired me. The front office staff is stacked with great, fun, motivated people lead by Pres/GM Rick Brenner.

I'll get a few shots from behind the wall next week. Portland comes into Manchester on Thursday, so I'll be sure to get a few shots for Batters Box.
