We couldn't really do the 13th installment of the minor league summary on Friday, least of all for pitchers, unless we wanted to give extra work to Dr. Andrews. So, it was postponed until Saturday.

The minor league affiliates went 4-2 yesterday, with nice performances from Joel Collins and Brett Cecil setting the tone.

It has not been a particularly good year for the pitching prospects, with injuries playing a significant role as usual.

#2JBrumfield - Saturday, July 28 2007 @ 01:03 PM EDT (#172193) #

I don't know if this signing has been pointed out but Dunedin's winning pitcher yesterday, Chad Blackwell, comes from the Gary SouthShore Rail Cats of the Northern League.  He made his organizational debut last night.  Unfortunately, I didn't get to see Blackwell here in Edmonton as Gary made their visit to Telus Field before I got here.  He pitched in the Pirates system last year.

Also of note, former Jays farmhand Clint Johnston - who was with New Hampshire in 2005 - is now with the Edmonton Cracker-Cats playing 1st base and DH.  Also, former Jays minor league pitcher Danny Core was in Edmonton this past homestand with the Kansas City T-Bones along with former major leaguer Calvin Pickering, who is much too good for this league!  He should back in the affiliated minors at the very least.

Also, Todd Betts of Canadian Olympic Baseball notoriety has joined the Cats as well.

The Jays don't upper ranks of pitching have been depleted because most of the best prospects have been rushed to the majors (with great success obviously), but there's not a lot more to look forward to. Gronk has zero left to prove in the minors (apart from needing to prove that he is taller), but the other pitching prospects have got a long way to go. While you should never write pitchers off -- they may suddenly discover that tricky changeup, or new spit on their spitball -- it's hard to see Josh Banks making it. He doesn't strike many people out and gives up too many home runs. 24 is not terribly old for AAA, but it's a consistent pattern by now. People compare him with Josh Towers reasonably enough; Josh Towers stats are in many ways rather similar (so-so strikeouts, good walks, poor HRs) but Josh Tower's stats are in the majors and even then you can see how fine a line he treads. I would be tempted to try Banks in the bullpen and see if he can raise his velocity a bit otherwise he'll just gently stew in AAA. Purcey's numbers still look good, but someone said he had done his best work against weak opposition. I am still optimistic for him though.
