A 2-4 night in the minors.

Syracuse 6 at Rochester 9

Ty Taubenheim got rocked for 8 runs in 3 innings. The Chiefs rallied with HRs by Chad Mottola and Ryan Roberts (who played SS last night).

New Hampshire 2 at Portland 4

Does NH play Portland every game? It was a bullpen game for NH and Matumoto got the start giving up 3 runs in 4 innings. David Smith had a solo HR for the Fisher Cats and Ryan Patterson was 3-5 with two doubles. Patterson has been particularly hot lately, hitting .352/.372/.670 in 88 July ABs.

Sarasota 1 at Dunedin 12

Russ Savickas gave up 1 run over 6 innings, striking out 3 and walking 4. Jacob Butler and Carlo Cota each had 3 run HRs. Lots of two hit nights for the D-Jays: Gonzalez, Butler, Cota, Jeroloman, and Gutierrez.

Lansing 4 at Quad Cities 11

It's tough to beat 4 cities. Graham Godfrey started and gave up 4 runs (3 earned) in 5 innings. He gave up 7 hits, 3 walks and struck out 8. Ron Lowe then came on and had little success giving up 7 runs in two innings. At the plate Jon Baksh had three hits and two of Lansing's RBIs.

Auburn 6 at Tri-City 3

Three cities is apparently more managable to beat. Luis Perez got the start and gave up 3 runs in 5.2 innings of work. At the plate Zeskind, Mastroianni, and Sanchez each had two hits. JP Arencibia had a double.

GCL Jays 3 at GCL Yankees 4

Y Chavez and Kevin Ahrens each had two hits. Ahrens also stole his third base of the season. Eric Eiland had a double. Brad Cuthbertson started and gave up 1 run over 5 innings, striking out 4.

I was reading a piece on Adam Jones, and noticed that he was drafted in the 1st round in 2003.  That round illustrates very well why it is impossible to judge a draft for at least 7 or 8 years.  There are any number of potentially great players there- Delmon Young, Jarrod Saltalmacchia, Brandon Wood and Jones- who have just started their careers.  Their major league careers are basically an empty slate.  And there are some who are on the way, Nick Markakis, Aaron Hill, Chad Cordero, with very good starts.  I'd bet that there is at least one marginal Hall of Famer in that round, but there is no way to guess who that will be.
