Snider had another great night tonight going 3-4 with a double. This kid can hit. The numbers speak for themselves. He should be in Dunedin pretty soon.
Smithers - Friday, August 17 2007 @ 12:34 AM EDT (#173190) #
Isn't it still pretty early in Robinzon Diaz's career to start labeling him as a "AAAA" player?  That .801 OPS in AAA for a 23 year old catcher with some speed makes one suspect that the future for the catcher spot in Toronto could be Diaz and Thigpen.
jgadfly - Friday, August 17 2007 @ 12:47 AM EDT (#173191) #
Re Snider... Why would they promote him this late in the season? Why not leave him in Single A and let him have a go at winning a Triple Crown (trails by 10 pts in BA, by 2HR's and tied for lead in RBI), MWL MVP and experience post season play at a comfortable level (which he missed last year)
ayjackson - Friday, August 17 2007 @ 01:07 AM EDT (#173193) #

Travis Snider has little shot at the Triple Crown as he is seven HR's back of the lead, not two.  This should not invalidate your point though - there's not much benefit to promoting him at this late stage of the season.  He'll have opportunities to move mid-season next year and beyond.

I thought that Snider was having a mildly disappointing season, but after reviewing the league batting stats - and seeing that Snider's .884 OPS leads the league - I'm inclined to believe it is a pitchers' league.  Is this true?

tstaddon - Friday, August 17 2007 @ 01:12 AM EDT (#173194) #
Agreed. Leave Snider where he is and, hell, let him play all of next year in Dunedin.  Given his curve, I'd argue that if he starts AA in 2009 and acquits himself well, he'll be in the majors in 2010 at age 22. That's fine with me.

As many have said previously, Smith and Mathews seem ready for AAA, Kreuzer and Butler for AA. If they start next year at those levels, that's ok. Too bad Santos has had such lousy luck (the BABIP) so far at AAA. Any idea if it's affected his fielding -- or were those just poor scoring decisions? Could there be two more different catching prospects than Diaz and Jeroloman. Both are playing very effectively, but... wow.

Finally, is anyone else of the mind that Hector Luna is no more useful than Ryan Roberts?
jgadfly - Friday, August 17 2007 @ 01:22 AM EDT (#173196) #
Geeze ! Did I miss alot of guys with more HR's than Snider. Thanks for the headsup AY ! So much for the TC for Snider. Hopefully he'll finish the season as he started ... strong & in good health.

I'm pretty sure that was just a typo (which has since been fixed).
Mike Green - Friday, August 17 2007 @ 09:29 AM EDT (#173200) #
It was.  He moved up from double A to triple A between the summaries, and I got so excited that I added an extra A!

Well, the Jays obviously agree.  They've sent him to Syracuse and called up Russ Adams.

tstaddon - Friday, August 17 2007 @ 11:57 AM EDT (#173210) #
I suppose this means more Olmedo at 3rd. May as well see if he can hack it there defensively, too, because he's looked fine at short. As for Adams, here's hoping that 2005 version makes the trip instead of the one that's been hitting like Howie Clark's younger brother.
Ryan Day - Friday, August 17 2007 @ 12:10 PM EDT (#173213) #

Luna's actually had a couple decent major league seasons (286/338/409 last year), and he's still just 27. Roberts, on the other hand, has been struggling in AAA. Luna can play a bit of short, too, which is probably beyond Roberts' capability.

Looks like Detroit called up Maybin.  I'm fighting back the urge to throw up.

Looks like Detroit called up Maybin.  I'm fighting back the urge to throw up.

Don’t be upset. I’m sure Romero has just hit a speed bump and is still well on his way to becoming the front end starter the Jays envisioned he would be.

Paying over slot for blue chip talent in the draft never makes any sense,,,,,

My jaw dropped when JP on a edition of WWJP said the Jays really liked Maybin but heard he was asking for a really high bonus. Maybin's signing bonus ended up being 2.65 million while Romero received 2.4 million.

The Jays are paying Corey Koskie and Eric Hinske a combined 6,562,500 million dollars this season.

Now you have a 20 year old Maybin already in the Majors while Romero looks like he should be demoted back to Single A.

On the positive side, Travis Snider can flat out hit. I have a general rule of not getting really excited for prospects until they produce in AA, but I’ll make an exception for Snider. What he’s doing with the bat is really impressive when you account for his age, home ballpark, and the league he’s playing in.

If only the Jays had drafted Dwight Gooden in 1982 instead of Augie Schmidt and Roger Clemens in 1983 instead of Matt Stark do you know how many World Series they would have won?
BulletJayFan - Friday, August 17 2007 @ 05:22 PM EDT (#173256) #

I suppose this means more Olmedo at 3rd.

Don't be so sure. Adams has played a few games at 3rd recently, in what I can only imagine is preparation for playing there in the bigs at some point. We should all be very, very scared of this possibility.

What is the story on Trystan Magnuson?  He was signed in July and has yet to appear in a game.  They can't be shutting him down early because he only threw 58 innings this year.  Is he injured?
mendocino - Friday, August 17 2007 @ 06:19 PM EDT (#173265) #

Epy Guerrero :

“I see this pitcher, sixteen, maybe five-nine, right-hander, skinny, fastball 88,” he says. “I wanna sign. Mel Queen comes. He says, ‘He’s already as good as he gonna be.” I’m saying, he good right now and we get him cheap. Mel Queen, he kill it. The Dodgers sign him: Pedro Martinez. ’Cuz of Mel Queen Toronto don’t get a Hall of Famer.”

Mike Green - Friday, August 17 2007 @ 06:19 PM EDT (#173266) #
As he's a Canadian, there are visa issues.  It took over 3 weeks to settle Collins' and Condotta's visa problem.
Jim - Saturday, August 18 2007 @ 08:59 AM EDT (#173275) #
If only the Jays had drafted Dwight Gooden in 1982 instead of Augie Schmidt and Roger Clemens in 1983 instead of Matt Stark do you know how many World Series they would have won?

Except that now ahead of time the fans have information in the process and a good number of people thought taking Romero was a mistake.  This isn't second guessing.
Mylegacy - Saturday, August 18 2007 @ 01:44 PM EDT (#173289) #

Adams hasn't got the arm for SS but he does for 3rd. Curious. Berry, berry curious.
