Future Hall of Fame lefty Tom Glavine agreed to an $8 million, one-year contract with the Braves yesterday, returning to the city he always called home even while pitching the last five years in New York.

Glavine has 242 of his 303 career wins with the Braves, including five 20-win seasons. The 242 wins is fourth on the all-time franchise list (Smoltz and Maddux are fifth and sixth, respectively) and just 26 wins behind Phil Niekro's all-time Atlanta record.

What else is going on?

Interesting.  Here's a link.

The Angels win this one. Their starting 5 is set for next year, so Saunders and Moseley can settle into swing roles along with the fab five of K-Rod, Speier, Shields, Oliver and Bootcheck. Maicer Izturis moves to short (ZiPS projects him to out-OPS Cabrera by about 30 pts, though I don't know what his defense is like).

In addition, I would guess that the Angels deal for that other Cabrera now that Nick Adenhart is expendable (or at least more expendable than he was before). I also think the Angels will look to extend Garland ASAP.

The White Sox dealt a 28 year old above average innings eater for a 33 year old shortstop, who's a pretty good player, but not one that's going to help them win the division next year. Kinda confusing if you ask me.

Seems kind of a weird move at first since they have Uribe at 4.5 million.  It will be interesting to see what Williams next move will be.  Can Uribe play 2nd or will be a utility guy?

Garland makes $12 million this year.  He strikes out under 4.5 per 9, and gives up oodles of line drives.  He's had an expected FIP of just under 5 the last two years, and that's where I figure he'll be this year.  He does hold runners well and gets the ground ball, but the Angels right side won't quite turn them into DPs at the rate that Uribe/Crede did.

Garland gave up the rather high total of 16 unearned runs last year; his ERA is not a fair reflection of how he pitched.

With Lowell, Schilling, ARod, Posada, RIvera and Abreu all staying put, this off-season is rendered a little more drab. It's clear the Yankees and Red Sox won't be entertaining us with dramatic moves to fill holes. Sure leaves way too much free time to talk about Marco Scutaro (of whom enough e-ink has been spilled, I'd argue).

Lowell's deal seems below market, if only because others might pay a 4th year. I always resent seeing the two richest teams in baseball get players at less than market value - it makes the disparity even greater, and no one suffers from this disparity more than the Jays.

In other news, Keyser Soze's lawyer signs on with the Indians.
