I'm all out of clever, so here it is in plain, brutal honesty: The pitching stank in New Hampshire and wasn't very good in Dunedin either. The pitching was excellent in Lansing but the offence was disappointing.

The Syracuse Chiefs and Columbus Clippers (Washington Nationals) were rained out. The Chiefs are getting outstanding starting pitching this season from Kane Davis (3.48 ERA in 13 starts), Bill Murphy (4.19 ERA in 13 starts), David Purcey (2.41 ERA in 12 starts), John Parrish (2.65 ERA in 10 starts), and Davis Romero (3.75 in 13 starts). After years of mediocrity, the club is only 1.5 games out of first place.

Akron 13 New Hampshire 6

It was another ugly night on the hill for New Hampshire. Canadian starter Scott Richmond allowed six runs on 11 hits in 5.1 innings. He struck out six batters, allowed one walk and three homers. Recent pick-up (and former Astros prospect) Jared Gothreaux did not do any better and allowed three runs on three hits and two walks over 1.2 innings. Daryl Harang was lit up for four runs on two hits and four walks in one inning. Travis Snider went 1-for-4 and hit a three-run homer. Scott Cambell was 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Eric Nielsen threw up the same line but added a double. Chris Gutierrez also had two hits. Jacob Butler was 0-for-4 with three strikeouts.

Daytona 6 Dunedin 2

A.J. Wideman's nightmare season continues. The Canadian southpaw has been demoted to Dunedin and he was awful Thursday evening against the Cubs' affiliate. He allowed eight hits and five runs in 3.1 innings of work. He walked one batter and struck out one. Rehabbing reliever Jeremy Accardo actually received the start for the Jays but work just one inning and allowed one run on two hits (therefore picking up right where he left off in the majors). Celson Polanco worked 2.2 scoreless innings and struck out three batters. Edward Rodriguez and Connor Falkenbach also pitched scoreless frames. At the plate, Brian Dopirak was 2-for-4 against his former club and hit a solo homer in the ninth inning with the game out of reach. Chris Emanuele was 1-for-3 with a run scored and J.P. Arencibia was 1-for-4 with an RBI.

West Michigan 1 Lansing 0 (10 innings)

The Lugnuts wasted a great start by Randy Boone who went seven innings and did not allow a run. He gave up five hits, three walks and struck out three. Catcher Matt Liuzza catch two runners try to swipe bags. Cody Crowell pitched well in 2.2 innings of relief but the WhiteCaps nickle-and-dimed him for the win in the 10th with two out. Overall, he allowed two hits, one walk and struck out four. The southpaw now has 55 strikeouts in 35 relief innings. Offensively, the Lugnuts were fairly quiet when it mattered. Moises Sierra and Eric Eiland had two hits. Darin Mastroianni and John Tolisano each had one hit. Mastroianni stole his 18 bag of the season (and has yet to be caught), while Sierra nabbed his 10th and Raul Barron stole his fifth.

Three Stars:
3. Moises Sierra, for two hits, his 10th stolen bases and a nice play on the base paths avoiding a tag
2. Travis Snider, 1-for-4 with a three-run homer
1. Randy Boone, for seven shutout innings.

Marc...  Any word on Jonathon Jaspe and his return to Lansing... his 50 game suspension should be close to ending.

He should be back after the Midwest All-Star break.

Marc... A J Wideman spent a significant amount of time pitching for Team Canada in Olympic qualifiers prior to spring training. Any word as to whether this has factored into his disappointing start to '08 ?

I don't know that anyone in the organization has drawn that conclusion regarding Wideman, but catcher David Corrente also spent time there, hurt his elbow and has yet  to play this season as a result. It's definitely something to think about...

Brett Cecil is the only NH starter with an ERA under 5.50, in a pitcher's league no less.  It might be time for Kenny Rodriguez to be called up and have one of the number of deserving Lansing pitchers to move up to Dunedin.

How's this for weird.... Marc Rzepczynski has a 3.93:1 GB/FB ratio, but the lefty is 7.33:1 against RH hitters.  He needs to be in Dunedin, and so does Brad Mills.  And you could argue the same for Randy Boone.  I suspect we'll see this shortly with the SS teams starting up and the midpoint of the season arriving.
Lugnut Fan - Friday, June 13 2008 @ 10:15 AM EDT (#187133) #

And so does Edgar Estanga, and Cody Crowell, and an argument could be made for Tim Collins.

Right now, Lansing is in a big fight for a playoff spot so nothing is going to happen this weekend.  The entire pitching staff in Lansing has been outstanding and the staff ERA is under 3.00.  I can see a couple of movements, but I don't see how everyone that deserves to move up can because of the numbers game behind it.

Marc Hulet - Friday, June 13 2008 @ 10:17 AM EDT (#187134) #
This is why they pay Dick Scott the big bucks... I just don't see how it works... You move Randy Boone, Marc Rzepczynski, Brad Mills, Cody Crowell and Edgar Estanga up to Dunedin. Then you move Kenny Rodriguez up to New Hampshire... but where do the other four spots come from for the other four deserving pitchers? Dunedin does not have any other pitchers deserving of a promotion and the same can be said for New Hampshire. There is no one I would really want to cut either.
Ryan Day - Friday, June 13 2008 @ 10:26 AM EDT (#187135) #
It may be time to give up on Gustavo Chacin, who hasn't been healthy for years and doesn't even seem able to fool anyone at A-Ball. At this point, Zip or Mills seem far more likely to contribute to the Jays.

This is why they also say "Things always work themselves out".  Somehow they just always do.

As a sidenote, I highly recommend checking out the PDF copy of the GameNotes in the media section of the NH Fisher Cats website.  They release one for every game and it's very detailed when it comes to things like giving LH/RH splits for every player & injury updates (e.g. Ryan Klosterman leaving the game after fouling a ball off his foot 2 nights ago).

Another thing I noticed while perusing the latest copy, was on page 13 (there's that # again!), they show the "Last Time It Happened" log and the last grand slam hit by a FisherCat was on 7/7/07 by (wait for it) Lyle Overbay!  I just found that kinda funny.

There's no reason Chacin can't continue his miserable rehab in Lansing (or even The Northern League).

Martin could go to the Dunedin pen, with Paul Phillips demoted or released.

That gives you room for K-Rod, Ginley, Gonzalez, Starner, Mills and Zip at Dunedin.

At Double A, you could move Magee to the Pen and end the Chad Blackwell experiment.  (NH doesn't even have a reliever worthy of promotion - 1.53 by Harang is the best WHIP in their pen!)

That would give you Cecil, Romero, Richmond, Ray and an open spot at NH.

Certainly not easy decisions.

ayjackson - Friday, June 13 2008 @ 10:51 AM EDT (#187139) #

Speaking of the Northern League, despite a cool spring, Winnipeg is averaging 5,865 fans per game through the first 13.

Is there any way we could get an afiliate there?  Is it too remote?  I know there are multiple daily flights to Chicago, Minneapolis and Denver as well as a slew to Toronto, Calgary and Vancouver.  Any thoughts on what affiliated league they could play in?

John Northey - Friday, June 13 2008 @ 11:02 AM EDT (#187141) #
Well, something the Jays could end up doing, once the first half is done in Lansing, is move some guys straight to AA.  If they appear to have the stuff why not push them a bit and see what happens.  Warn them that they are going to be pushed harder than intended but some guys should be able to handle it.

Guys who are 22 or older should be able to handle AA I'd figure, so pushing might be a good idea.  Candidates include...
Edgar Estanga - 22 years old, 0.94 ERA in 48.0 IP in relief (2 IP per game) with 9 BB and 47 K's and 0 HR's. Had 5 IP in Dunedin last year mixed with time in Lansing and Auburn
Brad Mills - 23 years old, 2.47 ERA in 69.1 IP over 13 starts with 26 BB and 78 K's and 2 HR's.  Was just in Auburn last year and has yet to be challenged
Cody Crowell - 22 years old, 1.29 ERA, 35 IP in relief over 25 games, 14 BB 55 K's (!) and 1 HR.  A+ or AA for him quickly as 14 K/9 IP is just silly.

Guys for Dunedin...
Randy Boone - 23 years old, 24 in August, 2.67 ERA in 70.2 IP over 9 starts and 5 relief outings with 17 BB and 52 K's and 3 HR.  This is his first pro year so Dunedin might make more sense but he is old for the midwest league
Mark Rzepczynski is 22 and has just 7 starts so far, so I'd move him no further than Dunedin for now.

Being the one to decide this stuff must be hard.  As I said in another thread I'd be using pitch f/x machines to see movement and location for all these guys to help determine if their stuff is good enough for A+ or AA and if it is then put them there.  Counting on eyeballing it alone mixed with raw stats isn't as good as having solid measurements on the elements that will either allow them to succeed or fail at the next level.
ayjackson - Friday, June 13 2008 @ 11:23 AM EDT (#187143) #

Baseball Analysts have some splits posted for first round picks.

David Cooper played in a pretty extreme pitchers park at Berkeley (81 in 2007).  Interestingly, his splits are very home biased.  Wallace and Davis, for example, played in a hitters park at ASU.

jgadfly - Friday, June 13 2008 @ 01:00 PM EDT (#187147) #
Marc... Thanks for your responses... with the first half of split season ending and short season starting do you see any demotions from Duneden or Lansing happening... the kids in Lansing have been holding their own but the grind seems to be catching up to most of them... ( at least thats what I gather from the slide in their stats and never having seen them play ( June 21st ? game to be televised headsup) )... Tolisano seems to be the only kid keeping his head above the stream although Sierra and Ahrens are doing better than I realized ... McDade and Chavez might need some confidence boosting in GCL or Auburn and some of the Duneden guys might need some refresher time in Lansing... Any plans for a more informed or insightful (than this) review  of the split season finish... Also with Cooper having played in the wooden bat Cape Cod League do you think that he could start at Lansing ? Thanks again.

BA has the draft signings up now if you like to look at it with the unsigned players mixed in.
Kelekin - Friday, June 13 2008 @ 03:04 PM EDT (#187153) #
I just don't understand why we are signing 28-year olds (Jared Gothreaux) to replace demoted pitchers from AA.  AAA, I understand you get the depth.  But AA? Personally, I can't see Vermilyea being on the team much longer (disappointingly, at that).  Falkenbach is going nowhere, as well as Chacin.

Still... for the Jays to say they would be more aggressive promoting players this year, Cecil is really the only one who has seen that be true.
It's just disappointing to see college pitchers dominate in a level well below where they should be in favour of guys much older.

The inside bit that I am getting out of Lansing is that Cooper will not be in Lansing.  Actually, I have heard that no one from the draft will start in Lansing.  The only one that may see Lugnut time is Cooper and I was told that that wouldn't be until the end of the season or so.  Probably for playoffs.
ayjackson - Friday, June 13 2008 @ 03:25 PM EDT (#187156) #

In Bastian's blog, JP is quoted as saying that they'd like Cooper to see a month of action in Auburn and then head straight to Dunedin, bypassing Lansing altogether.

He was also quoted as saying that Arencibia has to move soon.

"He's getting close," Ricciardi said, when asked if Arencibia was due for a promotion. "He's got to go. There's not much more he can do down there."

John Northey - Friday, June 13 2008 @ 04:24 PM EDT (#187158) #
Have the Jays done much promoting?  Checking B-R for pitching....

RH starters: one player at multiple levels: 21 year old Kyle Ginley who was at Lansing last year, started there again this year before moving to Dunedin after 6 starts

LH starters:
4 at multiple levels...
David Purcey: AAA plus a couple of ML starts
AJ Wideman: one game in Dunedin, 13 in AA looking bad at both
Brett Cecil: 21 years old, 4 games in Dunedin, 9 in AA looking good enough for AAA (34 IP, 11 BB 36 K, 3 HR, 3.41 ERA at AA)

RH relievers: 12 at multiple levels, 3 were rehabbing ML'ers (Accardo, Wolfe, Benitez), 2 we know about in Camp & League, a AAAA guy in Jared Gothreaux
Mike MacDonald: 26, spent 4 relief games in AA and 16 games (2 starts) in AAA
Sean Stidfole: 24, 23 games in AA relief, 2 in Syracuse, not a real prospect from what I can see due to crazy wildness
Zachary Dials: 22, 8 relief games in A+ (7 saves) and 18 in AA, lots of K's after few the previous two years
Julio Pinto: 23, 5 games, 1 start in A+, 11 games, 1 start in AA, looked very good in A+ but ugly in AA
Chad Blackwell: 25, 18 relief games in A+, 4 in AA, reached AA in '06 but spent 07 in A+
Brian Pettway: 24, 9 relief games in A, 11 in A+, first year as a pitcher after 3 as a hitter (757 OPS in minors)

LH relievers: 5 at multiple levels, Jesse Carlson & BJ Ryan we know well
Jo Matumoto: 37, 5 games in AA, 13 in AAA (1 start), would love to see make it but odds against him
Mike Gallo: 31, 13 relief games in AA, 6 in AAA, just a warm arm
Brandon Camardese: 24, 9 in A+, 5 in AA but a very wild 5, played for 4 different teams last year from rookie to A+ for Cincinnati

So, any sign of guys being moved quickly?
Brett Cecil, Kyle Ginley, Zachary Dials and Brian Pettway appear on the fast track, but the rest appear to be just filling space as needed (injuries, other promotions causing domino effect).

JP is quoted as saying that they'd like Cooper to see a month of action in Auburn and then head straight to Dunedin, bypassing Lansing altogether.

That's what the Jays did with Russ Adams and Aaron Hill.  They played about a month in Auburn and then went to play in Dunedin for the rest of the season.
92-93 - Friday, June 13 2008 @ 05:14 PM EDT (#187161) #
I wouldn't be so excited about Arencibia. That 4:1 K:BB ratio is awful, although it would look nice if he was a SP. He seems to be channelling the Bengie Molina in him, and while that wouldn't be too bad, it's not something to gush over.
ayjackson - Friday, June 13 2008 @ 05:36 PM EDT (#187163) #

That 4:1 K:BB ratio is awful

In his college career, Arencibia's K:BB ratio was less than 1.5:1.  This year, it has improved each month (10:1, 3.5:1, 2:1).  He's striking out less than 18% of the time, which is not that bad for a slugger.  Over the past 6 weeks in Dunedin, he's hitting about .340 and slugging about .620.  He's a catcher and, by all accounts, will stick there.

I don't know what you mean by gushing, but Arencibia's season is certainly worthy of optimism.

Mike Green - Friday, June 13 2008 @ 05:40 PM EDT (#187164) #
Benjie never struck out so much.  I tried to find a comp for Arencibia, and really struggled.  I tried BR's play index and tried to find a catcher who in his first or second major league season between the ages of 23 and 25 had slugged more than .450, walked fewer than 40 times and struck out more than 100.  There apparently hasn't been one.

There have been lots of players at other positions, like Jim Rice, Ron Kittle, Juan Encarnacion, Angel Berroa and Jacque Jones. Before people get too excited about the mention of Jim Rice, it should be noted that he was in the FSL at age 19 and hit .291/.370/.489 with 58 walks and 108 strikeouts.  Arencibia's 2008 is a little ahead of Jones' age 22 season in the FSL.

Sneeps - Friday, June 13 2008 @ 05:43 PM EDT (#187165) #
Who cares if he strikes out a lot?  The man just drives in runs, and that's the bottom line.

Lind has been a doubles machine in June.  I believe that's his 9th already.

It's time to bring him back up, he's got nothing left to prove in AAA, and the Jays aren't going anywhere this year anywho.
