Four wins, New Hampshire won behind a very good start by Brett Cecil and a home run from JP Arencibia.  Lansing won with a good start by Marc Rzepczynski, ably supported by Edgar Estanga and Tim Collins.  Syracuse won with an average start from Davis Romero, Kevin Mench finally showed up and hit a home run.  Dunedin did not get good pitching but won anyway.  Auburn got good pitching from Joel Carreno but lost.  The GCL Jays lost, again.

Toledo 2  Syracuse 8

Syracuse got on the board in the first, two walks were followed by rbi singles from Matt Watson and Hector Luna.  The Chiefs added two more in the third, again a walk was followed by a home run from Kevin Mench.  Davis Romero was pitching out of trouble all night although he only allowed one run.  Six hits and five walks in 5.2 innings equals a lot of pitching out of the stretch, although three double plays helped.

Buck Coats doubled in a run in the fifth, Eric Kratz doubled in a run in the sixth and Watson hit a two run home run in the seventh.

The Chiefs had nine hits, Watson and Luna had two each.

New Hampshire 3 New Britain 1

Brett Cecil pitched five shutout innings, five hits, one walk, four K's.  Jean Machi provided two shutout innings, and Zach Dials pitched a perfect ninth.  Jared Gothreaux and Jo Matumoto combined to allow one run in the eighth.

New Hampshire scored one run in the second, Travis Snider, Jacob Butler and Anthony Hatch each singled.  JP Arencibia homered to make it 2-0 in the fourth and in the seventh Jacob Butler led off with a triple and scored on a sac fly.

New Hampshire hitters had eight hits, Snider, Butler and Hatch had two each.  Scott Campbell had the night off.

Dunedin 7  Brevard County 6

Brian Dopirak hit a two run home run in the first inning but Reidier Gonzalez was not at his best and Dunedin trailed 4-2 after six.  In the seventh Luis Sanchez and Adam Calderone singled.  They were followed by three errors, scoring two, then Jesus Gonzalez doubled in two more.  Brevard made it 6-5 in the bottom of the seventh before the teams exchanged solo home runs in the eighth, Dunedin's came from Calderone.

Dunedin had ten hits, Calderone had 3, Brad Emaus and Dopirak had two each.

Great Lakes 1  Lansing 2

Marc Rzepczynski pitched five innings and allowed one run on four hits.  Edgar Estanga pitched three shutout innings and Tim Collins pitched a scoreless ninth for the save.

Jon Jaspe hit a  solo home run in the first inning and in the third Jaspe hit a sac fly after Eiland had singled and Tolisano doubled.

Jaspe had three hits, Eiland had two.

Mahoning Valley 6  Auburn 4

Auburn jumped out to a 6-4 lead, Adam Amar hit a solo home run and Brian Van Kirk hit a three run shot.  Meanwhile Joel Carreno pitched very well, five shutout innings with only three hits allowed.  Marcus Walden replaced Carreno and gave up five runs in the seventh and eight innings, and Jason Monti allowed the sixth run in the ninth.

Amar was 3-4 and Chris House was 2-3.

GCL Tigers 14  GCL Jays 3

Henderson Alvarez and Tyler Kelsey accounted for most of the damage.  Nate Nelson and Kyle Gilligan had two hits each.  The baby Jays had five steals.

3 star selection

3rd star - Matt Watson
2nd star - Marc Rzepczynski
1st star - Brett Cecil

Went to see the Fisher Cats in New Britain tonight.  Cecil looked pretty good.  Has an obviously-good fastball; the Rock Cats' hitters were often late.  The hits he did allow were hit pretty hard-- the opposing batters were laying off his off-speed stuff and sitting on the fastball a little at times, maybe.  They didn't get much in the air though; seemed to be a lot of ground ball outs.

For me, Arencibia was the standout player.  Two great throws to second base to nab runners, one a straightforward caught stealing, the other a pickoff I think?  I sort of forget the first one now.. anyway, impressive arm, and his homer was really well hit, a real no-doubter.

The game recap said that Arencibia picked a runner off 2nd and the Cecil/Arencibia combo had a caught stealing as well.

Long-time lurker who finally decided to join the fray.  Thanks all for distracting me from work for all these years.

While reviewing the Chiefs roster, I was amazed at the logjam of non-prospects in AAA - Coats, Lydon, Adams, David Smith and now Kevin Mench all vying for playing time in the outfield.  Matt Watson seems to be DHing and playing backup at 1B, but played the OF as recently as '06 in Sacramento.  I believe guys like Hector Luna and Thigpen can also played OF in a pinch.  Ryan Patterson's power has seemingly returned this year after his injury, and he may be in line for a promotion soon as he is now 25 and old for AA.

This all made me wonder whether now is the time for JP to say goodbye to Russ Adams.  It would seem like an appropriate time given the recent rejuvenation of sorts with the arrival Cito and Lind playing everyday.  Sporting an OPS of .662 at age 27, having no true position and being passed on the depth chart by peers such as Inglett and Luna does not bode well.  I would love for JP to take a mature approach and release Adams, effectively saying "Our bad, let's move forward", while freeing up a 40-man roster spot.  This would also give more at bats to guys like David Smith, also 27, who has showed great power at AAA in limited ABs this year as well as a decent year in NH in 07.  It seems like at this point Smith has a better shot at helping out the Jays in the future as a 4th OF, but is being squeezed out for ABs by guys like Adams.

Also important to point out for Cecil is 8 groundballs to 1 flyout in that outing.  He's maintaining a better than 2:1 groudball ratio overall while maintaining a high strikeout rate.  These two factors together in a pitcher tend to point to a very good upside, putting Cecil in a similar quadrant as guys like Roy Halladay.  Combine that with his low homerun rate and there isn't much to hate.

It'll be interesting to see towards the end of the year if they relax his pitch count restrictions and let him throw a full 90 or 100+ pitches a few times.  The Jays took three lefthanders before the second round in the years prior but they may have finally found their productive lefty in Cecil.

Sort of off-topic...Any BP subscribers out there who can comment on Goldstein's Future Shock article today?  Did he have any interesting comments on the Jays system?  Starving student here who can only afford so many online subscriptions...

Focused solely on Lansing.... said a scout said that Ahrens should be a solid player, Jackson is more defense than offense and will take time and that Tolisano is better off being a utility player as he's not great at 2b.  Also didn't think Tiny Tim Collins would hold up at higher levels.

Apparently the 2nd coming of Cito Gaston has had a trickle down effect all the way to AA, as the FisherCats romped this afternoon for their 4th win in a row.  Matthews & Snider are among the offensive heroes.

A number of minor league roster moves today:

Syracuse has added LHP Chris George formerly of Colorado AAA (not sure how he was acquired whether by trade or minor league free agency).  Syracuse had been operating one under the 24 player limit.

Dunedin had been operating one under the 25 man player limit, but has now added LHP Cody Crowell and LHP Brad Mills from Lansing.  RHP Paul Phillips is no longer listed on the roster to leave their roster at 25.

Lansing, to replace Crowell and Mills,  has added both RHP James Dougher and  LHP Frank Gailey from Auburn.

Auburn's roster is now two under the limit.

David Purcey left tonight's start after two innings, not sure why yet.

Anybody know why Eric Thames isn't playing yet? I was guessing that we would see him in Auburn.

Gerry - Thursday, June 26 2008 @ 10:51 PM EDT (#188089) #
Thames was injured when he was drafted.  I believe he had surgery on his quad.

Purcey probably left because it took him 70 pitches to make it through 2 innings. There didn't seem to be any injury problems, and the only visit to the mound was from Langford, but he wasn't hitting his spots tonight to say the least. He was squeezed a bit on the corners, but that's hardly an excuse for throwing 70 pitches through 2 innings. And still, despite his control issues, he was the most effective Syracuse pitcher outside of Erik Kratz, go figure.

As for the Syracuse outfield logjam, they need Mench if they're going to make the playoffs, because no one else has really shown that much power, yet. Coats is actually a prospect, I believe. Was in the Cubs system until last year, and has played well at the upper levels of the minors. I don't know what his upside is, but anyone who can run, hit, and field, like he can shouldn't be written off. Lydon needs to be in the lineup because he is just so incredibly fast, and this lineup is built around speed. Can't hit anything more than singles, but my God can he run. I think Smith is about to pass Adams on the Syracuse depth chart, honestly, and I agree he should be getting more playing time. Adams is something like 3 for his last 34 and Davis seems to be losing confidence in him. Thigpen and Cannon, too, finally, because neither of them look that good.
