Second base hasn't exactly been a black hole for the Jays recently, but with Orlando Hudson walking the free agent streets these days and Russ Adams designated for assignment, we can step back for a moment -- pivot, as it were -- and look at a couple of guys who once played the position in Toronto, each of whom will (should?) get some Hall of Fame talk going upcoming.

On next year's HOF ballot, ex-Jay (and ex-Met and ex-Indian and others) Roberto Alomar will appear for the first time, In five years, thanks to his recent retirement (just last month), ex-Jay (and ex-Met and ex-Indian and others) Jeff Kent will appear on the ballot for the first time.

So the question put forth to you is simple ...

  • Who gets in? Both? Neither? One but not the other?
  • Who deserves to get in? (This is a different -- and perhaps less simple -- question, of course.)

Note: I really did try to post this as a poll initially, but for some reason the poll function is not working for me. So a discussion thread it is! Stake out your position, defend it, and -- politely, or at least civilly -- let those who disagree with you know why they are wildly, hopelesslly, helplessly wrong!

I'm a big Hall guy, but think Alomar should be first ballot -- he might not be -- and Kent should get in too (he might not, either).

Both should. Both will.

Kent's crusty personality may delay his entry. As for Alomar, it will be interesting to see if the spitting incident holds him back. I agree with Mike Green that Alomar's slew of gold gloves will not be tarnished by less spectacular fielding appraisals in saber circles.

Both should. Alomar will.

I am going to guess that Kent will not.  It's a crapshoot with slugging second basemen, with Joe Gordon and Bobby Grich being the models.  Gordon got in this year, but he had the MVP and was considered a good fielder.  I think that Grich will eventually get in through the VC, via an Arky Vaughan moment in 2025 or something.  Kent was not the fielder that Grich or Gordon was, though.

Alex Rodriguez tested positive for anabolic steroids in 2003, under MLB's voluntary testing program.
