Everyone at Batter's Box is shocked and depressed to learn of the untimely passing of John Brattain.

I never met John, who posted here from time to time - I knew him from his work at the Hardball Times, Baseball Daily Digest, and his own blog. I know that 43 is way too young to die.

He leaves a wife and two children, and our hearts go out to them.

Today is a sad day in the internet baseball community. John was one of the funniest men around and, by all accounts, one of the kindest. My condolences to his friends and family.

A class act and a terrific writer.  He'll be deeply missed.

A person who I'd have liked to have met, but don't think I ever did (might have at a SABR meeting sometime but without really knowing who it was).

43 - wow.  I'm at 39 and can't imagine how hard it would be on my wife and kids if I passed on (my one daughter was asking about that possibility last night - weird).  My thoughts are with his wife and children as they cope with this horrible loss.

John took the time to send me a note of encouragement once, not sure why now - something to do with the blog.

In any case, the fact that he was "good people" was very obvious in his kind words. I'm sure those who loved him have suffered a huge loss. My prayers go out for them.

I've encountered John's work quite frequently as I've surfed baseball sites and blogs over the years. While I - as well as others here - have never met him, I felt he was a kindred spirit. A fellow traveler of all things baseball. He'll be missed. I wonder if his family know how many people - well outside the circles they know of - have been affected by him and impressed by his efforts?

To his family - my condolences.

To my fellow Bauxites - revel in joy and bliss every day, make kindness and grace your everyday companions. Too soon he left us - too soon we join him.

He was a good guy. Loved his Expos. Loved his Jays

I never knew John Brattain and I miss him. He was that kind of writer. His stuff was usually funny and entertaining, often informative and thought-provoking. He seemed to care about so many people and such a variety of matters. He came across as a good writer, a real baseball fan, and a good man.

Condolences to his family and friends.

"Revel in joy and bliss every day, make kindness and grace your everyday companions. Too soon he left us - too soon we join him."

After three moments of sadness and memories of his wonderful work, this is the advice that I will take... now back to making a graph. I can not honour him with this picture file but I do believe I another name has made its way into the ack section of my thesis. Sigh.

Sometimes, I really hate the night shift... it is a quiet time to work, but being up this late at night, at my age (32) is sad.

fyi, Jerry Howarth just mentioned on the radio tonight (Opening Night) that he enjoyed John's company.
