Strong pitching and weak hitting was a theme in the minors on Sunday, as the four affiliates allowed just 10 runs in five games yet still only won two of 'em.

Las Vegas 1    Nashville 5

Brad Mills was a hard luck loser today.  Mills threw six strong innings allowing two runs on five hits and two walks to go against seven strikeouts.  Unfortunately, Brian Bullington and the offense conspired to drop Mills to 0-5 despite an ever-improving 3.63 ERA.  Bullington allowed three runs in  his lone inning to put things completely out of reach.

At the plate, Angel Sanchez, Buck Coats, and Randy Ruiz  combined to go 6-for-12 for the 51s.  Unfortunately, the rest of the lineup went 0-for-22.  That seems like a good place to end this one.

New Hampshire 0    Connecticut 1  (Resumed from Saturday)

This game was postponed Saturday night with the score 1-0 in favour of Connecticut through one inning.  And, well, eight innings later, that's exactly where things ended.

At the time, the rain seemed like a stroke of luck for the Fisher Cats as it removed top Giants prospect Tim Alderson from the mound.  Well, things only got tougher as his replacement was the even better Madison Bumgarner.  Bumgarner one-hit the Cats for six innings while striking out nine.  David Cooper and Brian Dopirak were each 1-for-4 though Cooper did strike out three times.

Casey Janssen picked up for Randy Boone in the second and was impressive in going 5.2 and allowing just three hits and two walks against three strikeouts.  Janssen has now allowed just two runs in 23.2 innings to got with a 17:5 K:BB ratio.

New Hampshire 8    Connecticut 2

So after being shutout for 8 innings this morning, what do the Fisher Cats do?  Why, score 8 runs before they record six outs, of course.  Crazy how baseball works.  Four hits in one game, and 8 in the first inning plus, just minutes later.

Nick Gorneault swung the big stick for New Hampshire today going 2-for-4 with 3 RBI.  Brian Dopirak was the only other Fisher Cat with two hits, but nearly everyone else had at least one.  Brad Emaus was 1-for-4 with a run scored while David Cooper went 1-for-3 with two runs, a walk and an RBI double.

Reidier Gonzalez started for the Cats and was brilliant going 6 innings and allowing a run on five hits.  He struck out 8 against no walks.  The 23 year-old is now sporting a 1.88 ERA through seven starts.

Daytona 0    Dunedin 6

The D-Jays faced a tough task today in rehabbing Cubs star Carlos Zambrano.  The portly one didn't impress them much, though as Dunedin jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first thanks to two walks and three singles including RBI raps by Manny Rodriguez and Adam Loewen.  Zambrano settled down for a couple of frames but the Jays struck again in the fourth when Darin Mastroianni ended The Big Z's day with a two-run single.

All told, Dunedin scored six times on seven hits with only Loewen recording more than one safety.  Justin Jackson was 1-for-2 with an RBI, a walk and a strikeout.  Kevin Ahrens went 1-for-4 with a run scored, and more importantly, zero whiffs.

The real story on the day was starter Kenny Rodriguez who threw seven shutout innings allowing only three hits and a walk to go against seven strikeouts.  Chad Beck and Tim Collins each provided a scoreless inning of relief.

Dayton 3    Lansing 0  (12 innings)

Boy was the Lansing offense ever flat on Sunday.  A hit here or there and they escape with a 1-0 win.  Instead, the Lugnuts only mustered five singles and a double in dropping this one in extras.  Kenny Wilson was one of the worst offenders going 0-for-6 with 3 strikeouts.  Jonathan Talley and Justin McClanahan each had two hits.  Nearly everyone else sucked.

Chase Lirette started and went five innings, allowing just two hits and walk.  Three other relievers bridged the gap to the 12th where Jonas Cuotto surrendered the three-spot.

Three Stars:

3rd Star:  Casey Janssen; 5.2 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 3 K

2nd Star:  Reidier Gonzalez
; 6 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 8 K

1st Star:  Kenny Rodriguez;
7 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 7 K

Wow is the system loaded with pitching (especially starting) at the moment.  In order of ERA/ERA+ 2+ starts minimum ignoring rehab guys.

Majors: Romero (268), Cecil (256), Halladay (156), Ray (128), Richmond (108), Tallet (98), Purcey (66) (plus Burres & Litsch)
AAA: Castro (1.04), Mills (3.76), Miller (3.81) [Hayhurst, Purcey, Burres, Cecil over 5 each]
AA: Castro (0.84), Gonzalez (1.88), Magee (2.70), Rzepczynski (2.93), Perez (3.69), Boone (4.34)
A+: Kenny Rodriguez (3.00), Magee (4.26) then lots of stuff best unsaid (5+ ERA's)
A: Huggins (1.80), Alverez (3.35), Anderson (3.97), 2 guys over 8 (Wells & Koch) and another over 5

So we have 6 guys who performed at league average or better for 3+ starts in the majors (one is in the minors at the moment, I count 98 as close enough).  AAA has 1 guy who is killer and two doing well.  AA has the killer listed plus another under 2 and 2 more under 3.  A+ and A both have a solid guy or two.  This is the type of thing all GM's dream of.  A ML rotation that is solid with guys in AAA begging to come up and more in AA.

This isn't mixing in any relievers or the guys who are targetted for low A or rookie ball.  Trades will be coming, but will they take until the winter?  Only time will tell.

With interleague play coming and Adam lind likely to play LF , is it time to let Travis Snider play in AAA and have either Brett Harper or Buck Coats on the Bench.

Aslo should the jays start looking for a Cheap Platoon lefthanded LF for this year.

Baseball America has their first Mock Draft up (behind the subscription).  They have the Jays going off the board to select Canadian college lefty James Paxton.  Lets see.....college player, lhp, and Canadian.....that took a lot of thought.

Anyway, Paxton looks interesting....here's the profile.

A lefty that throws 96 mph! - as long as he is able to hit the zone more than Purcey, take him.  I wonder how he would compare to Loewen or Francis?  Seems much from the same mould.

I second the suggestion they send down Snider during interleague play.  Coats is playing well and could come in for defence.  Snider is looking overmatched at times in the bigs.  Plus they might be able to avoid having him become a super two.

I doubt Coats would be an upgrade over Snider.  I've seen Coats in the big leagues - I'll take Snider.  I like the low pressure approach they're using with Snider.  The message is that they aren't concerned about his level of production right now and will give him time to adjust.  As things heat up towards the trading deadline, Management can reevaluate.

I'll echo others' comments that when Travis was ripping it, everybody wanted him hitting higher in the lineup.  Now that he's slumping, fans want to send him down.  I'd prefer that we allow him to go through hot spells and cold spells.  He certainly doesn't look any more outmatched than Rios has for most of the season.

Brad Emaus is #13 on the BA Hot Propspects Sheet this week.  No subscription required to read this:

It only seems like Emaus has come out of nowhere. He fell to the 11th round of the 2007 draft because he struggled with an ankle injury as a Tulane junior, but he's handsomely rewarding the Blue Jays' investment thus far...A converted third baseman, his bat is his ticket to the big leagues, and his manager, Gary Cathcart, applauds his ability to "hit a lot of pitches, even out of zone."

I doubt Coats would be an upgrade over Snider.  I've seen Coats in the big leagues - I'll take Snider.  I like the low pressure approach they're using with Snider.

I am guessing, though won't presume to speak for the original poster, that Coats' role would be to serve as a late-inning glove man for Lind, who would become the team's LF during interleague play. Snider, presumably, would go down to AAA to get 4 AB a night during this period and would return thereafter.

There seems to be a certain level of logic there.  With Scoots perhaps having limited availability for the next week, Inglett would be a versatile addition though.  (Able to play some infield.)

Ricky Romero gets the start for Las Vegas tonight at 7.  Internet radio and Gameday are, as usual, the fanatic's friend.

Arencibia has homered and walked twice in 3 PAs tonight.  That's the way.  After a horrible start, he gone 12-38 with 7 walks, 3 strikeouts,  4 doubles and 5 homers over the last 10+ games.

"he gone 12-38"

Apparently Mike too has been watching the Chicago feed the last few days.

"Hawk" Green just doesn't cut it, I am afraid.  Arencibia has gone 12-38...  D'oh.
Gerry - Monday, May 18 2009 @ 09:54 PM EDT (#200196) #

Make that 3-3 with two homers and two walks.

(Arencibia in case you weren't sure)
