The biggest sports news involving the states of Wisconsin and Minnesota since Brett Favre took place Friday as the Brewers and Twins completed a trade.   One of the principles of that deal is the subject of our POTD.

Carlos Gomez kneels down in disappointment after being thrown out trying to steal second base by Rod Barajas during a September 7th game against the Rogers Centre.

Just to be pedantic, there was no transaction between the states of Wisconsin and Minnesota for Favre.  Brett signed as a free agent in Minny after leaving the New York Jets.

This piece, linked to at BTF, echoes my sentiments. Dumb players, in terms of baseball IQ, are just brutal to watch. But Alex Rios has ensured that we all know that.

MLBTradeRumors reports that the D'Backs and Jays are in trade talks for Chris Snyder.  Sure hope if this happens the D'Backs are eating a good chunk  of the 11.25 mil owed to Snyder over the next 2 years.

Bastian twitters: Jays GM Alex Anthopoulos scheduled to talk to the media later today. Will likely address 2010 plans after meeting with ownership this week.

Cott's has Snyder making http://mlbcontracts.blogspot.com/2005/01/arizona-diamondbacks_10.html .   If we can deal for Stephen Drew in addition with Stynes, I'd pay the whole shot, plus Cecil, League or Accardo and an A-level Prospect.

I was hoping the Jays would get in on Snyder. I'm guessing the Dbacks will eat a small portion of his contract when he gets moved. I doubt it will take much more than someone like Accardo. A 28 year old catcher who hovered around an .800 OPS from 2006-2008; also a nice transition to the JPA era, if that era ever comes to fruition...

Interesting, check this recent update to the Snyder trade:

"12:31pm: Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic reports that the two teams are discussing a Snyder for Lyle Overbay swap. He mentions that it's "unclear how far along the trade talks are."

If this rumour is true I wonder what AA's plan is.  I'm assuming Lind moves to 1b, Snider takes over LF, and Ruiz get the shot at DH with Dopirak waiting in the wings.  That would leave an opening in RF (or CF if AA has the sense Ricciardi didn't and realizes that it's time to move Wells over), and the Jays' lineup would lean heavily to the right.

If there's no money exchanged, it's a tough call in my opinion.  Snyder is solid defensively and he put up OPS' of 773, 775, and 800 from 2006 - 2008, which is good for a catcher.  His career 689 OPS vs. RHP is worrisome though.

Alex Anthopoulos state of the union conference call from today is available at the fan590 site.

I think a straight swap of Overbay for Snyder is a good deal for the Jays (assuming Snyder's medical records check out). Frankly, if Snyder had his normal .780ish OPS last year he'd probably have some decent trade value. One injury-prone season isn't enough, in my opinion, for him to completely lose his value. If the Jays wanted to trade Overbay I am guessing they'd have to eat about $2 million. And he has little upside at this point. Snyder has the potential to be a top 10-15 starting catcher in baseball and is only 28. Get 'er done AA.

Someone on this very site suggested just that deal a couple of weeks back....I'm forgetting just who....

Overbay for Snyder makes sense to me. Snyder is a moderate upgrade from Barajas. Also, trading Overbay frees up the logjam at LF/DH/1B. This allows either Ruiz or Dopirak to play 1B. Lind at DH and Snider playing everyday in leftfield with one of Ruiz or Dopirak playing against the occasional lefty. Lose some defense, but gain some power.

Favre was with the Jets?  Really?  The 2008 NFL season is a total blur for me.  It had something to do with the Detroit Lions going 0-16.
