Marc Rzepczynski pitched six innings and gave up three runs on eight hits.  For Colorado Springs that was a good start.  Josh Roenicke pitched a perfect seventh and eighth before tiring and giving up a run in the ninth.

Las Vegas took control with five runs in the fourth.  Brett Wallace singled, JP Arencibia doubled, Chris Lubanski, Brian Dopirak and Chris Aguila had rbi singles, Brad Emaus finished the scoring with a two run double.  It was deja-vu in the fifth, Wallace singled, Arencibia doubled, Lubanski singled and Dopirak delivered a sac fly.

The last Fisher Cat run came via a second home run by David Cooper Cooper was 3-4, Mastroianni, Mayorson and Eric Thames had two hits each.  Shawn Bowman had two walks, Loewen was 0-4, he hasn't had a hit since his 5-5 game last Saturday.

Kevin Gray in the Union-Leader has the scoop on the Farquhar, Collins roles:

Reliever Danny Farquhar, who has 30 career saves for the Fisher Cats, served as setup man last night and worked two innings. It's a new role.

"The organization has seen him as maybe a middle reliever, so they want to start grooming him that way," New Hampshire pitching coach Tom Signore said.

The new plans calls for Collins and Trystan Magnuson to share the role as closer. Farquhar, depending on the number of pitches thrown, may be used in a two- or three-inning save situation.

Dunedin 4  Daytona 12

Dunedin were outhit 16-7.  All four Dunedin pitchers were scored on, Joel Carreno gave up six of the runs, Kenny Rodriguez four.

Dunedin scored all four of their runs in the eighth inning.  Mike McDade had a three run home run.  Brad McElroy and Brian Van Kirk had two hits each.  Adeiny Hechavarria went 0-4 and is hitting .205, .119 in his last ten games.

Ryan Tepera started and two solo home runs was all the Loons could get off him in 5.2 innings.  In total Tepera gave up seven hits and had four K's.

Lansing scored their first run with a walk and a ground out.  The second run came on back-to-back-to-back singles by Balbino Fuenmayor, Karim Turkamani and Eric Eiland.  The game was tied until the bottom of the eighth.  An infield single, a passed ball, a wild pitch and another single put the Loons ahead for good.

Brian Slover took the loss.  Eiland had two of the Lugnuts five hits.

Egan Smith is in Auburn presumably because they don't have enough pitchers.  He is 21, did very well in Auburn last year, and came back after an injury and threw decently in his first start in Lansing this year.  Hopefully, he's back to Lansing or even Dunedin soon.

Seems like Arencibia doesn't take any walks when he's hot, times he takes walks are when he's not hitting that great.  Perhaps he's at his best when he's allowed hit aggresively.

I read somewhere, don't remember where, that Smith will make 5-6 starts maximum for Auburn.

Roenicke is now at 9 hits in 19 innings, 23:4 K:BB ratio.

I expect more adjustments for Josh before he settles in at the big league level, but this, and Purcey's performance for the Jays at the MLB level, are definitely encouraging for 2011 and beyond.

Speaking of the major league level, how about Jesse Litsch today? Still doesn't have his 93-94 mph pitches back, and I don't expect him to be really right before 2011. But a good game, very nice 5th starter start.

Very nice to see the new role for Tim Collins, hopefully taking the first steps on the road to becoming the lights out closer of the future pen.

Tiny Tim stat of the week - he now ranks 8th in the Eastern League in strikeouts with 60 in 35 IP, which is only 7 back of the co-leaders (including Kyle Drabek) at 67.  This despite being at least two years younger than any other leader and throwing roughly half the innings solely in relief.  In contrast, the highest ranking MLB reliever in strikeouts is Carlos Marmol at 71st.

Plenty o' room left on the bandwagon, jump on in!

Sure.  Collins as an ace reliever makes a lot of sense. He's equally effective against righties and lefties, and you can leverage his talent while reducing the risk of injury.

According to gameday, he did manage to crank it up at least once to 93 today, and was hitting 92 regularly.

Not sure who you're actually thinking of but Litsch was never a 93-94 mph guy... he's throwing at exactly the same velo he's always had... You can even check out FanGraphs and look at his pitch types for average fastball velocity... same as always: 88-92 mph on the four-seamer, 85-87 on the cutter.

Random thoughts, because I did my usual "let's look through every prospect of the last decade" moment at 5 in the morning:

I realized John Roberts was drafted in the 29th round of 2005.  He didn't play any baseball between 2005-2008, so was he not signed when he was drafted and we signed him years later? Just curious on that one because I thought it was weird to see his first stats appear for 2009 when we drafted him in 2005.

Also of note, Joey Metropoulos, another 1b who was let go too early by the Jays, won the Frontier League MVP last year.  Wonder if anyone will give him a contract next year?

Roberts was drafted out of high school by the Jays but went to college instead... After his senior year he was not drafted, so the Jays offered him a free agent contract and he signed.

The Jays dealt AAA journeyman to the Mets today....and Adam Loewen didn't play in todays NH game ...

Related?

I hope so.

I doubt it.  The Fisher Cats are in the middle of facing something like nine lefties out of ten, that has hurt Loewen, Thames and Jeroloman.  Loewen struck out four times against Oliver, the Erie starter, last Sunday so I imagine Luis Rivera is resting Loewen for that reason.
Kelekin - Sunday, June 20 2010 @ 02:32 AM EDT (#217268) #
Thanks Marc.

I assume they traded him to make room for McCoy actually.

TamRa - Sunday, June 20 2010 @ 05:29 PM EDT (#217286) #
actually, they had both McCoy and reed needing at bats - I remembered McCoy but figured that wasn't relevant, but I forgot all about Reed's demotion.
