Hey Batter's Box! To all you devotees of "Baseball from a Canadian Perspective," there's an interesting post today from valued fellow Bauxite Tangotiger on his The Book blog called Lowering the standards to retire numbers so that we can have an excuse for celebration.

More to the point for our site's interests, though, Tom also dips his toe into the question(s) raised by the fact that "the Nationals have retired the Expos numbers." First, can you name the four Expos whose numbers have been retired***? And what do you think of Tom's list of four (especially one) who should be, but who aren't on that list?

*** According to Wikipedia, "The Montreal Expos retired numbers in honor of four players (Carter #8, Dawson #10, Staub #10, Raines #30). When the franchise relocated to Washington, DC, in 2004, the newly-christened Washington Nationals originally chose not to recognize any uniform number retired while in Montreal, but later reversed their decision. On October 18, 2005, the NHL's Montreal Canadiens honored the departed team by raising an Expos commemorative banner listing the retired numbers to the rafters of Montreal's Bell Centre. "

Interesting that the 4 numbers retired include 2 HOF'ers (Carter & Dawson), 1 future HOF (Raines) and a near HOF quality guy (Staub has 2716 hits, 292 HR's, 1466 RBI - at one time 3000 hits was a HOF lock and 1500 RBI's was a near lock, 300 HR being a big bonus).

Staub is the odd one though as he only had 4 years in Montreal and most baseball fans see him as a Met, not an Expo although he did hit the most HR as an Expo - says something about where he played - Houston (horrid for hitters back then), Mets (also horrid for hitters), and Montreal (pre-big Owe was a neutral park).

Steve Rogers was their Dave Stieb, but a bit weaker. Dennis Martinez belongs in an Expos HOF but I feel retired numbers require a bit more than that. I loved Tim Wallach as a player but he isn't close to having his number retired even if they were still in Montreal imo. Vlad probably would've returned to Montreal at some point had they been run competently (perhaps never leaving) but now would I retire his number? Probably not, but maybe.
