Hot lumber told the story on the farm on Friday with the affiliates winning 5 of 6 games played.  Some nice pitching performances, but the story was told by so many stepping up to the plate on offence.

Las Vegas 11  Reno 7

15 hits propelled the strongmen of the Vegas strip past the Aces to the chagrin of 7,877 Reno faithful at home Friday night.  Winning pitcher Kyle Drabek (2-2) struggled through 6.0 IP allowing no less than 10 hits, 5 runs and a homer while striking out just 2.

The 51s covered Drabek’s sins on the night by scoring in 5 of 9 innings led by superb performance on offence by Brian Jeroloman (4 for 5, 2B, 2 RBIs, K, AVE .249).  David Cooper (1 for 4, 2 R, HR, RBI, BB, AVE .372) Homered and Brett Larwie (2 for 3, 2 R, 2B, 3B, 2 BB, AVE .369) kept forgetting his left hand injury and reached base 4 times including a double and a triple.  Adding to the cause were 2 RBI nights from Kevin Howard (1 for 5, R, 2 RBIs, 2 Ks, AVE .289) and Chris Woodward (3 for 5, 2 R, 2B, 2RBIs, K, AVE .297).  Danny Perales (1 for 5, RBI, K, AVE .309), Adam Loewen (2 for 3, 2B, RBI, 2 BB, AVE .320), and Darin Mastrioanni  (0 for 5, RBI).

Ryan Schimpf took the offence honors with 4 RBIs, going 3 for 4, with 2 runs, and a pair of homers.  Other multi-hit performers included Brad McElroy (2 for 4, R, K, AVE .271), Sean Ochinko (2 for 4, R, RBI, AVE .249) and Ivan Contreras (2 for 4, R, 2 2B, RBI, K, AVE .208).  Another RBI was dished up by Ryan Goins (0 for 3, R, RBI, K, AVE .278) on a sac fly.

Lansing 5  West Michigan 6

Despite 13 hits, the Luggies suffered the Farm’s only loss Friday night on the road at West Michigan.  Lansing pitching gave up a total of 9 hits, struck out only 3 and managed 4 BB.  Loosing pitcher Brandon Berl (3-1) (2.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, BB, HR, ERA 2.45) coughed up the gopher ball to the number 7 West Michigan Hitter in the bottom of the 8th and watched the winning run cross the plate.

RBI’s came from three luggies.  One each from 3 hit Marcus Brisker (3 for 5, R, 2B, RBI, K, AVE .235), 4 hit  Marcus Knecht (4 for 5, R, 2B, HR, RBI, K, AVE .304) and Garis Pena (1 for 5, R, 2B, RBI, K, AVE .219).

Vancouver 9  Tri-City 5

Exploding with 15 hits, the visiting Vancouvcer Canadians dominated hometown Tri-City due in no small part to the 9 Ks from Canadians pitchers.  Winning pitcher Brian Longpre (3-2, 3.0 IP, R, 2 H, 2 Ks, ERA .073) had 2 Ks, as did closer Eric Brown (1.0 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 1 ER, ERA 5.25).  Starter Zack Breault (4.0 IP, 3 H, 2 BB, 5 Ks, ERA 4.14) faced 18 batters and struck out 5.  In the field the Candians had two throwing errors, one from Bryan Kervin (2 for 4, BB, AVE .198) and one from Kevin Patterson (1 for 4, 2 RBIs, 3 Ks, AVE  .143).

In a ten hit flurry, the Blue Jays took a baseball lesson to the Tigers behind winning pitcher Nicholas Purdy (3-0, ERA 0.79) who struck out 8 in 5 innings of shut out baseball.  Julio Carmona took the save.  Flawless in the field, the Blue Jays were mixed in base running with one stolen base by Dalton Pompey (2 for 5, R, K), his 16th while Angel Gomez (2 for 3, K) was caught stealing for the 3rd time this season.

Every Blue Jay hit for the day except Chris Peters (0 for 3, BB, K).  Multi-hit performances were served up by  Dalton Pompey and Angel Gomez.  RBIs also came off the bats of  Dickie Thon (1 for 3, RBI, BB, K), Alexsys Rodriguez (1 for 4, 2BB, RBI, K) and Justin Atkinson (1 for 4, 2B, RBI).

Given the state of the 2nd base position in the organization, I'd be tempted to promote Schimpf to AA to see if we have a prospect. He's old for High A.

In the spirit of the Colby Rasmus and Yunel Escobar acquisitions, who might be some trade targets (in the majors or minors) for 2B in 2012 and beyond?

Nice to see an undrafted guy like Casey Lawrence doing so well.  I don't suppose he's regarded as a prospect, but he pitched very well last year at Auburn and Lansing, and has done well this year at Lansing, to get the promotion to Dunedin.  Now has an ERA of 2.84 in 2 starts in high A.  Anybody know anything about what he throws?

Schimph didn't do much with the bat last year, but he's on a bit of a roll here, with 4 HR's in his last 10 games and a .297 average over that span.  He's only 5' 9" but now has 7 HR's in 113 AB's.  He's not handling lefties at all - just 2 hits in 25 AB's.

For 2B, how about the Nationals' Lombardozzi?

Scott sizemore, but the A's already beat us to him. At this point i'd just get a defense first, small ball guy and put him 9th. Mccoy would be fine from my end if we don't go crazy and put lawrie there. Didn't Teahen play some 2b too?

According to Jon Heyman, the Jays are still in on Jiminez. Seems unlikely to me - the cost in prospects and young players would no doubt be enormous.

Johermyn Chavez (traded with League) seems to be struggling in his first season in AA.

This is his age 22 season, btw.

Bluefield's Mitchell Taylor, who we drafted in the 7th round last year, really seems to be coming around. The 19 yr old lefty had a couple of rough outings to start the season, but in his last 6, comprising 26.2 innings, he's only given up 4 runs for an ERA of 1.35.

I've been studying David Cooper for a while, because I think we've all been wondering whether he's a Las Vegas mirage or not. The best case scenario here is Mark Grace: They both debuted at 24, they both walked more than they struck out, they were both good but not great at first base, they both had medium pop. I think if Adam Lind finishes the year respectably, trading him to open up a spot for Cooper in 2012 would be the best decision.

With all due respect, isn't Lind the better player?  Shouldn't they be trading Cooper, not Lind especially with where the team is in its roster evolution?  They need to compete in the near future.  They shouldn't be waiting for Cooper to establish himself.  The argument that Cooper may be cheaper should be mostly irrelevant as it is time for Rogers to step up and spend all that money they've been promising to spend when the team got competitive.  Add a starting pitcher stud and a closer and they should be pretty competitive right now.

In the Vegas game last night Jason Lane pitched 3 innings and had 5 K's. Danny Perales pitched one inning and had two K's.

The starter, Scott Richmond, had one strikeout in 4 innings.
