Lansing and Dunedin, with .707 and .659 winning percentages stayed their courses, each bringing home the bacon.  Las Vegas (20-21) and New Hampshire (16-23) continued their struggles, each with sub .500 records on the year.

Las Vegas 6  Memphis 9

An impressive attendance of 9,094 at Cashman Field didn’t help the 51s against the 15 hit attack from Memphis Friday night.  Losing pitcher Robert Coello (2-1) gave up 5 earned runs on 7 hits (two HRs) in just 4.0 innings pitched.  Starter Tim Redding gave up a round tripper as well among 6 hits he surrendered in 3.0 IP.  Rubin Gotay committed his 3rd error of the year in the 4th inning where Memphis put up 4 runs.

Las Vegas did muster 9 hits on the evening, including a pair of solo HRs from Travis d’Arnaud (6). Adeiny Hechavarria (4) and David Cooper (5) chipped in solo Hrs as well.  The other RBIs on the evening came from the same group, each batting in two. Anthony Gose had a multi-hit game, going 2 for 5 with a double and a triple. The 51s went 1 for 7 with runners in scoring position.

New Hampshire 1  Trenton 7

A hometown crowd of 6, 017 looked on as the Fisher Cats went even farther under .500 to 16 wins and 23 losses when starter and losing pitcher Yohan Pino (3-1) took his first setback of the year.  Pino went 5 innings and gave up 6 earned runs on seven hits, including a pair of home runs.  Jonathan Diaz had a fielding error.

Relievers Matt Daly and Matt Wright shut down the Thunder with only two hits in their combined 4 innings of work.  Despite the relief effort, New Hampshire bats could only bring in a single run in the game when Brian Van Kirk (2) hit a blast to left field.  Justin Jackson (2 for 3) had the only multi-hit game for the Fisher Cats while Mike McDade (1 for 4) had a double. Diaz (1 for 3) had the only other hit.

Dunedin 7  Bradenton 5

The D-Jays traveled an hour south to Bradenton and improved their record to 27 wins and just 14 losses.  Starter John Stilson went 5.0 IP, gave up 3 earned runs on 4 hits and struck out 3.  Winning Pitcher Shawn Griffith (4-1) only pitched a pair of innings, but struck out 3.  Dunedin had a pair of miscues in the field, a fielding error from Ryan Schimpf and throwing error from Kevin Ahrends.

Dunedin put up ten hits, including a combined 5 run serge in the 8th and 9th for the come from behind win.  John Talley went 3 for 5 with 3 RBIs and a solo homer in the 9th inning. Gabe Jacobo (1 for 5) and Jack Murphy (2 for 3) each batted in a pair.

Lansing 9  Fort Wayne 3

Lansing put on the dog for 8,212 partisans at Cooley Law School Field Friday, extending their impressive record to 29 wins and just 12 losses.  Reliever Eric Brown (1-0) took the win, his first of the year, with 3.0 IP and 5 strike outs. Reliever Javier Avendano earned his 6th hold of the year striking out 3 in 2.0 IP.  The Luggies had a pair of errors, a fielding boot from Andrew Burns his 8th, and a throwing error from Brown.

Lansing put their 9 runs up with only one extra base hit, a double by Markus Brisker (1 for 5).  Everyone else in the Luggies line-up had hits with a pair of Kevins --Kevin Pillar (2 for 5) and Kevin Patterson (2 for 5) putting up a pair of hits each.

Anyone know why T. Snider wasn't in the LV lineup?

For draftniks out there, check out this interview by John Sickels.

Earlier in the year there was some discussion about professional baseball people and media types reading blogs and such. Well apparently amateur scouts aren't above checking the internet to see where guys are projected to go.

Also, on the Jays' website they have a video of the Jays draft room from last year's draft. At one point the camera flashes on someone refreshing mlbtr. I thought that was pretty cool.

I don't see the video you're talking about. Can you post a link here?

Ahh...it seems that Snider's wrist was barking again & that's why he wasn't in last night's lineup.

If the Jays do decide to send Yan Gomes down, they could send him to New Hampshire to catch every day now that Jimenez is out for the season. Gomes' max value would be as a catcher.
Thomas - Saturday, May 19 2012 @ 03:38 PM EDT (#256665) #
That's a good point, Gerry. I wouldn't be surprised if the team does that, as the more competent Gomes is behind the plate, the better. If they do view him as a potential utility guy/third catcher, he could use more reps at third, as well.

Danny Knobler has said on Twitter that after optioning Adam Lind, the Jays put him on waivers Friday:

@DKnobler    Days after optioning him to Triple-A, Jays put Adam Lind on outright waivers Friday.

Jon Heyman chimed in w/ a tweet:

@JonHeymanCBS    our guy @DKnobler reports adam lind was placed on outright waivers friday. a.l. exec says, "no chance he gets claimed.''

Excellent point.

On Rotoworld there is a blurb which says that a Marlins writer speculates that Miami might be considering taking Lind.  They just sent Gabby Sanchez to the minors today.

John Northey - Saturday, May 19 2012 @ 11:04 PM EDT (#256693) #
To the idea of the Marlins claiming Lind I say 'woohoo'. They are one of the few teams with a 1B worse than Lind this year. Sanchez has hit 202/250/303 - 553 for a 50 OPS+ vs Lind's 186/273/314 - 586 for a 59 OPS+. If they are willing to pay $5 mil a year for that more power to them.

Miami's AAA 1B has a 767 OPS and is 28. In AA their 1B has a 623 OPS and is 25. Their depth is worse than the Jays at 1B. No wonder they chased hard after Pujols and Fielder.

Sometimes a change of scenery helps. It could be his back hurting, so less playing time may help. He was hot last year before his injury, so maybe he can rebound.

I think someone will take him for a partial price, maybe full price. The answer may come in a week or so.
Chuck - Sunday, May 20 2012 @ 11:11 AM EDT (#256721) #

I think someone will take him for a partial price, maybe full price.

Why would someone pay full price (though some in Miami are speculating just that)? If I'm a team that has even the slightest interest in Lind, I'm waiting for the Jays to eventually cut their ties altogether and just release him. Then I can pay him the league minimum and see, at that price, if he can turn things around. And if someone else "scoops" him on me, so be it. His career may well have a second act, but it's not a given.

Chuck - Sunday, May 20 2012 @ 12:22 PM EDT (#256728) #
Why would the Jays cut their ties altogether with him if they're paying him anyway?

I agree that superficially this would seem a silly move. Why not let him kick around AAA just in case he finds his stroke again? Why pay him to play for someone else?

But I think he will soon serve to be an organizational distraction (not Lind's words or behaviour, but all the talk about Lind). And for that reason, he may be set adrift. And I think if the team decides to make a serious play to include EE in their future plans, as the team's fulltime 1B, making that position clear to EE now and paving that path might go a long ways. Of course, it could leave the organization without both Lind and EE at the end of 2012 as well should EE elect to go the FA route rather than sign an extension mid-2012.

There was a little discussion on how believable Farrell is. My opinion was negative about him, which bugged me. I think he is smart, pleasant & still learning.

I think he cooperates too much with the press. IMO he should be evasive, because there have been a few times he has said something and the opposite has happened, sometimes by the next day.
Questions on T snider's & B Cecil's performance in the minors do not have to be answered by him IMO. But I could be wrong. Tough questions on struggling players are tricky, he should commit to nothing because then everyone knows what he said yesterday and the opposite happened today. There is a time line as well, the game ends, he speaks within a half hour, if a demotion is made, the player has to be informed.
If he moves a batter around in the order, just say that he is playing a hunch.
So far he has said the right things about Y Gomes. He should play the press. Establish a time limit and when he gets a question he likes use it to kill time eg Gomes is a player we like, young guy with versatility and a strong arm who needs ABs.
He stands up for his players in public which is good.

Farrell told the media he didn't know about Lind being put on waivers. That's either a big, unnecessary lie or there's a communication breakdown between the GM and the manager.
bpoz - Tuesday, May 22 2012 @ 11:57 AM EDT (#256810) #
I do not know the waiver rules. There is a hint that this is secretive, by that I mean that the player & his people are unaware. Only the other front offices in the league know.
If this is true then there was a leak somewhere. So IMO if Farrell lied he did the right thing in an tough situation.

I think it's likely that Farrell was caught off guard by the question, so claimed ignorance.  Though what happens to players who are not on the Active Roster is not necessarily the business of the Manager.
