Well, there's no question about it now ... That kid headlining the Mariners' rotation, he's pretty good.

Felix Hernandez shut down the Tampa Bay Rays this afternon, 1-0. 27 up, 27 down, (Jesus Montero's third-inning RBI single brought the scoreboard operator's day to an early end.) Perfect!

Whatchagot to say 'bout that, now, Mr. McIlroy?

Let's offer the Mariners three or four crappy players and see if they bite!

Also - there is something fundamentally unfair about a 90mph change-up.

Many pitchers with perfect games, or no hitters, are average pitchers who have a lucky day. You can't say that about Felix, he must be one of the best pitchers to have a perfect game.

Well, the very first one of the modern (post 1893) era was thrown by Cy Young, who was a pretty decent hurler his own self. The other Hall of Famers with a perfecto are Addie Joss, Jim Bunning, Sandy Koufax, and Catfish Hunter. Roy Halladay and Hernandez himself certainly appear to be on a HoF course, while Kenny Rogers, Dennis Martinez, David Wells, David Cone, Mark Buehrle, and Matt Cain were certainly very good pitchers. Geez, Len Barker, Mike Witt, and Tom Browning were awfully good if only for a little while.

I forgot Randy Johnson? (No longer active, not yet in the Hall.)

Harvey Haddix was the two-time defending K/BB champ when he threw his perfect game.

Another important factor in Hernandez' perfect game was the inept Tampa Bay offence. Of course, this is true of many other perfect games and no hitters.

That they're against Tampa Bay's offense? That is also true.

A couple of balls were hit to the warning track in the power alleys which would probably have been off the wall or over the wall in most parks.  Felix planned it that way, of course.

A great pitcher having a great game, with a very good defence behind him, and playing in Seattle against a weak offence.  A perfect storm.

Yes, including the two other perfect games this year: Humber against the Mariners (in Seattle) and Cain against the Astros.

And "helpful" calls from the umpire are also part of the calculus. Humber's 27th out, as I recall, was on a check swing on an outside pitch. And Hernandez appeared to walk Joyce on a pitch that would normally be called a ball. I imagine that in most historic perfect games and no-hitters, the umpiring would not survive terribly close scrutiny.

So, I was in Seattle yesterday... but not at the game... oops

Also seems to happen a lot on afternoon getaway days with the sun in the sky and a substitute or 2 on the field.

That's like 3 perfect games against the Rays in 2 years.
