In the city late tonight - double feature, black and white - "Bitter Tears" and "Taxi to the Klo".

Jason Marquis (6-2, 3.70) opens up this series for the Friars. Chad Jenkins (1-0, 3.60) goes for the Jays in a 10:10pm Eastern start at Petco Park. Catch the game on the tube or the radio. Maybe one day the idiots who are in charge of MLB scheduling will send the Padres to Toronto for a change.

My wife's niece (so technically, my niece) is coming over and chances are a movie will be in order...so I'll have to listen to the radio

Dick Enberg. Colby Rasmus.

Two men making my Saturday morning coffee in Seoul taste very sweet right now.

Jenkins getting LIT UP, but yet perfect through 3.

There are a ton of Blue Jay fans at PETCO Park tonight, the atmosphere looks/sounds great.

How Marquis survives in the majors with his stuff -- and shaky peripherals -- is truly a mystery.

Buck and Tabler making stuff up a lot more than normal tonight. I hate to think that fans are taking their word as expert.
Chuck - Friday, May 31 2013 @ 11:55 PM EDT (#272978) #
Poor piece of hitting by Melky with a favorable count and a very wild pitcher. Sometimes stupid lives on offense, too.
Alex Obal - Friday, May 31 2013 @ 11:56 PM EDT (#272979) #
You guys think the Padres are just going to take that lying down? In the next four innings they'll come up with something that outstupids all of those plays combined.
McNulty - Friday, May 31 2013 @ 11:58 PM EDT (#272980) #
Nice of Melky to hack at an neck high 2-0 pitch to ruin what should have been a big inning. Couple that with Arencibia's inexplicable gaffe, and you've got a microcosm of why the Jays are in last place.

Magpie - Saturday, June 01 2013 @ 12:04 AM EDT (#272984) #
something that outstupids all of those plays

I dunno. The only way Arencibia's throw was a good idea was if he also had the capacity to turn back time to some point when the base runner was not actually sliding into the bag.

He seems to think he has abilities he does not actually possess.

Alex Obal - Saturday, June 01 2013 @ 12:25 AM EDT (#272986) #
Oh, they'll find a way. They'll run out a middle infield of Quentin and Grandal or something. They'll throw three intentional wide ones to Bautista, then lay a fastball in there. They'll load the bases and then pinch-hit Cashner for Alonso. They'll throw to the wrong base on a routine groundout. They're the Padres. This is their game.
McNulty - Saturday, June 01 2013 @ 12:36 AM EDT (#272987) #
On the bright side, it appears that the Blue Jays may indeed decide Arencibia's fate soon if this recent change in his hitting approach peters out into more bad habits. To his credit, the last ten games or so he's shown the ability to take a few pitches. Making boneheaded defensive miscues and swinging through hittable fastballs against lefties like tonight just seems like more of the same.

If they continue to stick with him, I think it shows a GM who is showing too much stubbornness.
Thomas - Saturday, June 01 2013 @ 01:24 AM EDT (#272988) #
I just got in for the evening and saw these posts and thought that there's no way this decision to throw can be that bad. Everyone must just be letting out frustrations regarding JP's general defensive skills.

I have since looked at a replay. The decision to make that throw was that bad. It really was.
Thomas - Saturday, June 01 2013 @ 01:31 AM EDT (#272989) #
Continuing from Gerry's comment from a couple of days ago, there's another case of the mixed-up signs.

I also note Denorfia stole a base this game, which I think makes JP 1-for-22 this year so far in attempting to catch runners stealing.
Magpie - Saturday, June 01 2013 @ 01:35 AM EDT (#272990) #
It really was.

Of course, Jenkins pounded the point home by promptly striking out the number 8 hitter and retiring the pitcher to end the inning.

Lind's decision just now not to try to make an heroic play did not have to work out - the winning run could have scored on a base hit - but playing within your limitations is always smart baseball. Keith Hernandez probably takes two quick steps into the infield and nails the lead runner. But Adam Lind doesn't have that skill set, he knows he doesn't, and so he takes the sure out.

And I don't end up yelling at my TV, which I seem to be doing much more often this season than I'm accustomed to....
Four Seamer - Saturday, June 01 2013 @ 01:39 AM EDT (#272991) #
It's really a missed opportunity that JPA does not use Jethro Tull's Thick as a Brick as his walking to the plate music.  Did the University of Tennessee really bestow a degree on him?
smcs - Saturday, June 01 2013 @ 01:55 AM EDT (#272992) #
Debatable bullpen and bench usage in extras. I'd have gone to Janssen in 10 and Cecil in 11 and 12. Either that or let Cecil bat for himself in 11 and save DeRosa for a defensive replacement for EE after they take the lead.
Magpie - Saturday, June 01 2013 @ 01:57 AM EDT (#272993) #
Did the University of Tennessee really bestow a degree on him?

Curiously, almost a century ago, Ty Cobb was a big fan of college ball players, precisely because he thought they would be smarter and more mature. But while some of them have indeed been very smart ball players, some of them seem to think baseball is just like football. I think I'll blame college for that!
JB21 - Saturday, June 01 2013 @ 02:09 AM EDT (#272994) #
Start your catcher with a guy who strikes out one third of the time and who's hits are generally extra base hits?
McNulty - Saturday, June 01 2013 @ 02:09 AM EDT (#272995) #
Arencibia just swung at a 1-0 pitch a clear foot out of the strike zone.

Does the Blue Jays brass actually watch these games? I just don't see how they can continue to run him out there day after day.

Magpie - Saturday, June 01 2013 @ 02:09 AM EDT (#272996) #
Sending J.P. Arencibia when the guy at the plate has struck out 65 times in less than 200 plate appearances... what were the chances that was going to work? A whole new level of desperation.

Tomorrow the Blue Jays will finally have the chance to reveal their diabolical plan to have 12 men in the bullpen.
JB21 - Saturday, June 01 2013 @ 02:14 AM EDT (#272998) #
The best part is Tabler says "you gotta start him here, what's the worst that could..." Insert Buck calling the strike em out throw em out.

The number of kids still playing in the sandbox in right-center field is truly disconcerting.
Magpie - Saturday, June 01 2013 @ 02:23 AM EDT (#273001) #
I just don't see how they can continue to run him out there day after day.

Arencibia is beginning to look rather like the second coming of Randy Knorr, and that suggests that he probably wouldn't have even played for Cito Gaston. (One must acknowledge that Gaston did have something close to a fetish about defense at catcher.) While this team certainly has much bigger problems, I'm not aware that they think Arencibia's level of a play is a problem at all. Which bothers me a little, because John Gibbons was a catcher. It ought to bother him even more.

11pm on a Friday night? Let em play!
Magpie - Saturday, June 01 2013 @ 02:26 AM EDT (#273003) #
The best part is Tabler says

Wasn't that wonderful the other night when Tabler says "challenge him with a fastball" and after the fastball is rocketed for a base hit, Tabby says "well, if you throw him a fastball, that's what happens..."
Magpie - Saturday, June 01 2013 @ 02:28 AM EDT (#273004) #

Cabrera and Bautista staring down the prospect of 0-7. Melky can't go for that.

If I got to watch them for 15 innings, I'm relieved that the Padres have fairly decent uniforms for once in their history. This has been the scene of some pretty grievous Fashion Mistakes.

Bautista will take the 0-7. Ouch.
smcs - Saturday, June 01 2013 @ 02:38 AM EDT (#273009) #
That's true...I am basing this on sand around the Great Lakes. I think I'm just thrown off by the optics of a sandbox just beyond the outfield wall.

Weber can't come back until the 7th or 8th unless someone goes on the DL. Evan Crawford (AA) and Michael Schwimer (AAA) are already on the 40. Someone would need to come off the 40 for McGowan to be called up.

Will it take an injury to JPA to get AA to bring up Thole?
This may sound cruel but I've been hoping JPA gets hurt and go's on the DL for a month or so. Nothing serious, just a simple ankle sprain. Enough for AA to see how much better the pitchers are with Thole receiving, to see a more balanced lineup with another left-handed bat, and to watch a C who can actually get on base more than 25% of the time (I mean seriously, that's JPA's OBP - .250, while providing terrible defense.
Perhaps then AA would see just how terrible JPA is and how much he has been hurting this team in all facets of the game.
BlueJayWay - Saturday, June 01 2013 @ 09:31 AM EDT (#273023) #
I too am hoping for an injury.  I got my hopes up a bit when he fouled that ball off his kneecap.

The month of May was a better month than April. Attendance was down considerably. The Team has a better record, so far, this year than ever before. The Starting Catcher has turned into the village idiot. The GM still can't get it right even with a huge payroll. So not all is bad.
