Alex Anthopoulos was in Buffalo Saturday to see Liam Hendricks start. Hendricks pitched well and is now under consideration for the fifth starter spot. In addition to Hendricks, Kendall Graveman and Shane Dawson pitched very well, Matt Boyd and Alberto Tirado were OK. All of Graveman's outs on balls in play were recorded on ground balls.

The top two clubs lost, the lower two won. Ryan Schimpf hit two home runs. KC Hobson had two doubles, LB Dantzler drove in three.

Lehigh Valley 2 Buffalo 1

The Bisons were no hit until the sixth. Brad Lincoln pitched four hitless innings, he also didn't strike anyone out and walked four. The Bisons got their first hit in the sixth and Mike Nickeas hit a home run in the seventh.

Liam Hendricks pitched seven strong innings with the Jays GM, AA, in attendance. Hendricks gave up one run on four hits. Bobby Korecky gave up his first run of the season and took the loss.

Binghamton 6 New Hampshire 5

Matt Boyd had a decent start. Over 4 of his 5 innings he just allowed one hit. He did have one bad inning, the third, where four hits and a hit batter led to three runs. Overall it was an improvement for Boyd. John Anderson gave up three runs in relief, the eventual winning run.

Ryan Schimpf homered in the fourth and the sixth, both solo shots. The Cats added three runs in the seventh, Peter Mooney, Jon Berti and Kenny Wilson drove in a run apiece. Berti and Andy Fermin had two hits, in addition to Schimpf. Tyler Ybarra got the last seven outs in order to continue his up and down season.

Dunedin 5 Bradenton 1

The Jays jumped out to a first inning lead, saw the Pirates tie, then went ahead 2-1 in the fifth. In the seventh KC Hobson doubled with the bases loaded to make it a 5-1 game.

Kendall Graveman pitched six good innings. Other than his three K's he recorded all his outs on the ground. Hobson had two doubles, Christian Lopes also had two hits.

Dayton 3 Lansing 8

Shane Dawson had his best start of the year, five shutout innings, two hits, one walk, three K's. Alberto Tirado followed with three innings and he was not as good, three runs, two earned, on four hits and two walks.

Justin Atkinson got the Lugnuts on the board with a two run home run. He had a second hit later and scored again. LB Dantzler had two hits and three RBI. Santiago Nessy had two hits and has pushed his average up to 300 after a rough 2013.

Anthopoulos was in Buffalo Saturday to see Liam Hendricks start.

Do you think he came away impressed? Hendriks (no 'c' by the way) had 3 Ks and 1 BB in his 7 innings. In his first four starts of the year, he went 24.2 IP with 23 Ks. Since then, in 3 starts and 20 IP, he has just 10 Ks. That's got to be the biggest concern. He's also benefitting from a low BABIP -- .248 vs. .330 in his MLB career.

The box score also shows 12 groundouts vs. 5 flyouts in this last start, so that part of his game might have looked good to Anthopoulos. Historically, in the majors, he hasn't been a groundball pitcher (pretty normal distribution), and I don't know if he's been different this year in the minors or if this start was a bit of an anomaly (the FanGraphs gamelogs don't show the GO/FO info for each of his starts). What's kind of interesting, though, is Hendriks had Diaz at SS and Goins at 2B in this start, and if he is proving to be something of a groundball pitcher this year, and if he does get the call to the big leagues, he'll have to go from elite defence up the middle to, well, whatever it is that Reyes and Lawrie/Tolleson are. Average perhaps, or slightly above average? Wonder how often a pitcher gets the call to the majors and has to contend with worse defence from those key positions. (And from that other key position, CF, you'd have the drop-off from Gose to Rasmus.)

Apparently,  Hendriks will get a shot as 5th.....and Stroman will return to start in Buffalo.

I see that Dalton Pompey has not played in the last few games. Does he have an injury? Anyone know?

Dunedin twitter said just a little rest for Pompey. Maybe nicked up a bit?

Pompey is back in the lineup today after a two game break.

Matt Dean is on the DL, don't know why.

Just saw on Twitter that Pompey might have had the flu.
