The Jays have one of the better hitting prospects in the minors in Bo Bichette. He is now hitting an even .400 on the season.

Buffalo Bisons

Cesar Valdez struck out ten in seven innings of work while Gregorio Petit did the heavy lifting with the bat. He finished up with a homerun and four RBIs. The Bisons won 4-2.

New Hampshire Fisher Cats

Two games for New Hampshire and two games of late inning heroics. In both games Jonathan Davis played hero by pushing the go-ahead runs across in the final inning with a single and double, respectively. Conner Greene pitched six innings of one unearned run baseball in the first game, while Francisco Rios pitched three innings of two-run baseball in the second.

Dunedin Blue Jays

D.J. Davis had a big pinch hit in the eighth to push Dunedin to victory last night. Juan Kelly had three hits and the team got five innings of two run ball from Jordan Romano.

Lansing Lugnuts

Lansing played twice yesterday and Lansing won twice. 54 games into his first full season of minor league baseball and Bo Bichette is hitting .400. Bichette had seven hits last night, including a homerun and two doubles. Bichette has been a revelation. Do you promote him now or let him play the year out in Lansing?

Vancouver Canadians

Vancouver had their season opener last night and walked away with a victory. Juan Nunez pitched five innings of shutout ball and five batsmen had two hits.

DSL Blue Jays

8-6 good guys.

Three Stars

3. Cesar Valdez

2. Jonathan Davis

1. Bo Bichette

Play the rest of the year in Lansing???

I'm thinking do we promote him now to Dunedin or skip him right over to NH!!

One of the remarkable things about Bichette's offensive performance this season is the separation between him and the next-best players in the league. Keep in mind that he's 2.2 years younger than the average player at that level.

.400 BA (next best: .329)
.468 OBP (next best: .413)
.645 SLG (next best: .560)

Lansing has been eliminated from 1st half playoff qualification. They have two games before the All Star break. Dunedin is in their break and resumes play on the 19th.

I'd guess both Bichette and Guerrero head to Dunedin after the All Star game.

My guess is that Bichette goes up to Dunedin but Guerrero stays in Lansing for a little while longer.

DSL starter Naswell Paulino, all of 17 years old in April, is off to a great start, with a WHIP around 1 and 15 ks in 10 IP.  I found a facebook post congratulating him on his 70K signing bonus, which isn't huge, but no other info.  the 5ft 11 lefty clearly has room to grow and may be one to watch.  Anyone know anything else about the guy?

What are the chances that Bichette supplants Vlad as the number one prospect in the org by the end of the year?  A full year older, but I think Marc is likely right that he gets promoted before Vladdy does.

There is no way that Bichette goes to New Hampshire this year. Bichette topped the BA hot sheet yesterday and in the related chat scouts were quoted as loving Guerrero but still having some concerns over Bichette's unorthodox swing. He will just have to prove himself at every level.

Max Pentecost has a lower back strain. Pompey has a left knee sprain. Shouldn't be out long. Both per Sportsnet.

I mentioned Paulino in another thread.... He was an amateur outfielder but Jays liked his arm and moved him to the mound after signing... he's barely pitched so the success is impressive.

I wonder if Zeuch, Maese and Murphy were added to the phantom DL given the all-star breaks for the teams - it would help control their innings as first year full season guys
PeterG - Saturday, June 17 2017 @ 12:59 PM EDT (#343747) #
That is what I think as well for the 3 pitchers....just a mid season blow.
John Northey - Saturday, June 17 2017 @ 01:15 PM EDT (#343748) #
That might happen but really both are showing they are beyond Lansing. Coming into today their numbers are...
Bo Bichette: 400/466/644 (last year 427/451/732 in rookie)
Vlad Guerrero: 327/417/477 (last year 271/359/449 in rookie)

How many guys can hit 400 and see their lifetime pro average DROP? I'd lean towards pushing Bichette to AA as the kid hasn't had a real challenge yet. Vlad to A+ as he is doing excellent but not insane like Bichette.

Glenn Sparkman up to AAA for todays start.

Pretty underwhelming night on the farm yesterday.  5 games, and the good guys had a total of 29 hits with zero HRs while surrendering 26 runs.  Only the DSL team - off to a 9-2 start - got the win.

Lucas Harrell had his second good start for Buffalo, so add another name to the mix for the next depth starter in the cue.  Chad Girodo on the other hand continues to pitch himself off the Buffalo shuttle.

Blue Bird Banter with some interesting thoughts on the just concluded draft strategy:

https://www.bluebirdbanter.com/2017/6/16/15765736/some-early-thoughts-on-the-2017-blue-jays-draft

Only 14% of respondents to their poll feel that the strategy was a good one.  I'm in that 14%, how about you guys?

With Bolsinger back to AAA and Lucas Harrell coming back from injury the Bisons have too many starting pitchers. Jarrett Grube was the odd man out, he has been traded to the Indians for cash.

MLB Pipeline rated the Jays draft as being in the Top 5. They know more than I do. I'll go with them on this one :)
PeterG - Sunday, June 18 2017 @ 03:15 PM EDT (#343782) #
I am also among the 14%. I posted in the draft day 3 thread( should have been day 1) that Danner is leaning heavily towards signing. There is also a link there to an excellent article on him.

Yorman Rodriquez appears to have the Juan Kelly issue. He's only started once at C which suggests that he isn't viewed as a C and at 5'10" he's to short to be a 1B. He doesn't appear to have a position.
jerjapan - Sunday, June 18 2017 @ 05:30 PM EDT (#343786) #
Sparkman worked 4 innings, 4 baserunners, 1 ER, 1K.  Chris Smith followed him up with 3 good innings, continuing the trend of Buffalo stretching out the relievers on the shuttle in case the big league pen gets depleted.

Other than those two, another grim afternoon on the farm  - John Harris got bombed, Langsing and Buffalo had 4 hits between them, and New Hampshire gave up 13 runs.

Nigel, defense does indeed seem to be the problem with Rodriguez, although at 19 I have hope that he has time to refine his game behind the plate enough to be a bat first backup catcher.  It's a pretty sweet bat so far ... but throughout his career he's played more first than catcher, and he threw out a mere 4% of baserunners in his first season in the DSL.  28% the next year.  That's all I can find about his D, looking forward to hearing from some eye witness reports from all you C's fans.

PeterG - Sunday, June 18 2017 @ 05:40 PM EDT (#343787) #
I think it is now a virtual certainty that the Jays will keep Sparkman. It seems time to drop Harris back to Dunedin to try and get his game together. It was an aggressive assignment to NH in the first place and it hasn't worked out. Perhaps Jordan Romano could be promoted to take his spot in NH.
