Mallex Smith just joined the Bisons a week ago and has played in four games since. He broke out today going 3-4 with a double and a home run out of the ninth spot in the order. It helped the Bisons to an 8-5 win. The Bisons jumped out to a 3-0 lead, lost it and trailed 4-3 before rallying for the win.

Buffalo 8 Syracuse 5

Box Score

Smith's triple came in the third inning to open the scoring for Buffalo. In the fourth Gregory Polanco doubled in Kevin Smith. Tyler White then singled in Polanco to make it 3-0.

Nick Allgeyer cruised through three innings but two home runs in the fourth made it a one run game. In the fifth Mark Payton, who had homered in the third, hit a two run shot to give Syracuse the lead.

Buffalo scored four runs in the sixth. Nash Knight doubled in the tying run. Mallex Smith singled in Knight. The other two runs scored on an error and a wild pitch.

Four relievers who have spent time with the Jays this season pitched an inning each, Ryan Borucki, Kirby Snead, Travis Bergen and Trent Thornton. They didn't allow a hit between them although one run scored on an error.

Mallex Smith homered in the ninth to cap his night. He was the only hitter with a multi hit night and the only one who drove in multiple runs.

Three Stars

Third Star - Nash Knight

Second Star - The bullpen

First Star - Mallex Smith

Interesting to see that Thornton now has 3 saves in AAA - the Jays seeing if he can be a closer? A shame Moreno hasn't played much there - but a 111/200/111 line kind of kills it. He is just getting back from an injury after all.

Quite the battle in the AAA 'final stretch'.  Buffalo has only 1 loss, same for Nashville while Durham is still perfect.  The rules of the Final Stretch are here.  Durham has the advantage with the best winning percentage in the regular season (77-43), Buffalo was 3rd overall at 71-46.  Nashville way down at 63-56.  So if Durham could just lose 2 games then Buffalo has a shot but with just 3 to go the Bisons need a miracle to win.  FYI: Buffalo did win its division, but Durham was better overall (in a different division).

MLB has an article up -Prospects of the Year for every org. - kind of fun to read - for the Jays it has ...

Orelvis Martinez, SS/3B (No. 2, MLB No. 44): The 19-year-old infielder led the organization by a healthy margin with 28 homers -- the most by any Minor League teenager, in fact -- and finished with a .261/.345/.549 line over 98 games between Low-A and High-A in his first taste of full-season ball.

Zach Logue, RHP: The 2017 ninth-rounder played his way into Top 30 consideration with a 3.75 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 136 strikeouts (most among Toronto farmhands) over 120 innings at Double-A and Triple-A. He was even better for Buffalo, where he sported a 3.42 ERA in 17 appearances (16 starts).

Gabriel Moreno is still the #1 Jays prospect (#32 overall), Groshans #3 (#55 overall),  Gunnar Hoglund #4, Otto Lopez #5.  Zach is #27 but I guess he really impressed people this year.
