Buffalo gave up a run in the eighth to turn a 4-4 tie into a 5-4 loss. New Hampshire led 3-0 in the middle of the sixth and lost 5-3. Dunedin led 7-5 in the sixth before going down 9-7. They tied it in the bottom of the ninth before, yes you guessed, the bullpen conceded another run to lose 10-9. Vancouver avoided a bullpen implosion by getting rained out.

Read below for notes on Jordan Groshans, LJ Talley, Yosver Zulueta and Gabriel Martinez, among others.

Durham 5 Buffalo 4

New Hampshire 3 Somerset 5

Everett at Vancouver - rained out

Clearwater 10 Dunedin 9

This is what I noted from yesterday's games.

Nick Allgeyer continued his roller-coaster season. Four runs allowed on nine baserunners in six innings. Newly signed Derek Holland pitched an inning.

Jordan Groshans was 2-4 and is hitting .421 in his small sample of AAA hitting. He has only two K's in 19 at bats. He has just one extra base hit though, that was the area to improve in 2022. Still at least he is hitting well.

Seldom discussed LJ Talley tripled and he is hitting .322. Like Groshans he is homer-less, and has a reasonable K rate around 20%. Talley is just 24 and maybe another year in AAA with some weight lifting could boost his potential. However his position is first base and that is currently occupied.

After not pitching well last time out, Hayden Juenger went three innings with just a walk on his record for New Hampshire. The Jays are being very careful with Juenger's workload. He threw just 38 pitches. In 16.1 innings, Juenger has a WHIP of .80 and 25 K's. He was followed by four relievers, all of whom conceded runs.

Orelvis was 2-4 including his eighth home run. He had one strikeout. Tanner Morris was 1-4 dropping his average to .329.

Yosver Zulueta started for Dunedin and went 3.1 innings. He was somewhat wild early before settling down. He finished with 65 pitches thrown, 41 strikes, 24 balls. Zuleuta got 10 whiffs, 8 on his sinker. That pitch averaged 96.4 mph with a max of 99.

Kendry Rojas was one of the bullpen pitchers, he gave up four runs. Rojas had trouble throwing strikes, just 38 out of 63 pitches in three innings.

Roque Salinas is a 19 year old outfielder, signed out of Mexico in the off-season. Salinas is short, just 5'7", and has been playing every second day for the last week. He was hitting .111 before Thursday's game, but went 3-5 including driving in two runs in the ninth to tie the game. His average more than doubled from .111 to .217. Another outfielder, Teoscar Hernandez, was 2-4 with a home run. The third outfielder Gabriel Martinez was hitting .183 at the end of April. He has hit .412 with an OPS of 1.118 in May. Adriel Sotolongo was also 2-4.

Joey Murray has been placed on the seven day IL.

Three Stars

Third Star - Hayden Juenger

Second Star - Orelvis Martinez

First Star - Rogue Salinas

Somewhat wild seems generous for Zulueta today. In 3.1 innings he walked 2, beaned 2, balked twice and uncorked a wild pitch. Quite the line.

Adrian Pinto has a lot to learn about baserunning. He stole his first base in the game, but was caught stealing for the fifth time and was also picked off. Yikes.

Well he did lead the Dominican Summer League last year with 41 steals in 49 attempts. The next highest total was 30 steals.

Juenger is doing very well. Only scored on in 2 of 6 games. 60 pitches in 2.1 innings is his longest outing pitch wise. He may pitch 80 innings AA/AAA this year.

Adrian Hernandez is doing fantastic as a 1 inning pitcher.

The NH game has been postponed. Teams will find a place for any player that has a good bat. Tanner Morris could get to the majors that way.

So how are the big prospects doing?
  • Gabriel Moreno: just 16 games so far in AAA, 271/318/339, last extra base hit was April 21st (a double) just hitting 206 since. Is he hurt and just playing through it? Clearly not ready to help the ML team yet.
  • Orelvis Martinez: In AA (just 20), hitting 225/271/563 - the power is there, but not the average or walks. 2-28 BB-SO ratio which needs to improve. 18 hits, 11 for extra bases so he has 7 singles vs 8 HR. I suspect he can taste the majors now but needs to calm down and focus on just making solid contact, not legendary power. Still mostly at SS but playing a fair amount at 3B too.
  • Jordan Groshans: I don't worry about his A ball numbers (513 OPS) as that was just rehab. In AAA it is showtime and he is hitting 421/458/474 so far in 6 games. At 22 he has time but if he can keep an 800+ OPS this year he'll be well positioned for post 2023 when Chapman is a free agent to take over 3B. If he keeps hitting he might get a shot this year if an infielder is hurt. Flipping between SS and 3B.
  • Nate Pearson: listed on some top 100 lists, but hasn't played yet. Rumors are he is getting closer but with him I'll believe it when I see him on a mound against real hitters.
  • Leo Jimenez: 177/377/294 in A+, ugh.
  • CJ Van Eyk: hasn't pitched
  • Ricky Tiedemann: Just in A ball for his first pro pitching, but doing damn well: 0.90 ERA in 20 IP 10 BB 33 SO. I expect him to be a mid-season promotion to A+ if he keeps this up. Then 2023 to be A+/AA.
I could do more but that seems like a nice one to end on.

CJ Van Eyk just had TJ. He's probably not pitching this year.

Hiraldo, not doing much.
