Avert your gaze if you don't want the bad news. Buffalo were blown out. New Hampshire too. Dunedin were shutout. Vancouver gave Hillsboro a game but they too finally succumbed.

Columbus 14 Buffalo 3

New Hampshire 1 Somerset 8

Hillsboro 4 Vancouver 3

Dunedin 0 Bradenton 4

This is what I noted from yesterday's games.

The Bisons used eight pitchers, six of them were scored upon. The two exceptions were Julian Merryweather, who did put two runners on but escaped, and Adrian Hernandez.

Just three hits for Buffalo. One was a two run home run by Zach Collins. Another was a single by Otto Lopez to extend his hit streak to 19.

Somerset scored eight runs in the fourth inning, a stinker of an inning by NH. Jimmy Robbins loaded the bases but with two outs he hit the batter forcing in a run. Braden Scott was called on to get out of the inning and he did get a ball hit back to him. But he threw it away letting two runs score. Scott then hit the next two hitters making it 4-0 and then gave up a grand slam. Somerset scored eight runs with three hits. They had just one other hit in the rest of the game.

Meanwhile the Fisher Cat hitters could only get six hits. Davis Schneider had two.

Vancouver were 3-0 down after five innings and again two of the runs were unearned. Nathanael Perez (Lopes) started but he only gave up one of the runs in 3.1 innings.

The C's had one hit through five innings but four straight singles and a sac fly in the fifth led to three runs and a tied game. Unfortunately Mason Fluharty allowed Hillsboro to retake the lead in the eighth. Dasan Brown and Damiano Palmegiani had two hits each.

For Dunedin, the high flying offense was held to just four hits. Devonte Brown had two of them.

The starter was Rafael Sanchez, a 23 year old Cuban, making his first A ball start. He had previously pitched for the DSL and FCL Jays. He went five innings and gave up a two run home run while striking out four.

So what are some not horrible things? Orelvis Martinez while he dropped below the Mendoza line to a 198 avg, didn't strike out for once. A few minor prospects had 2 hits (Devonte Brown, Damiano Palmegiani, Dasan Brown, Davis Schneider), a few relievers didn't allow any runs in 1 IP or less (Julian Merryweather, Adrian Hernandez, Brady Lail, Juan Nunez, Jake Elliott, Jimmy Burnette, Troy Watson, and Harry Rutkowski). Ugh. That is really digging deep for positives isn't it? The only stolen base on the night from the majors to A ball was by Zack Collins (!) go figure.

Our farm should have given the ML team Moreno this year. It probably did.

No veteran minor league pitching prospects like Hatch came through. Fringe ML pitchers like Thornton, Borucki did not improve. Merryweather & Pearson got injured again. Only Max Castillo broke through.

The above are players that had a chance to contribute to the Jays. Moreno & Castillo were not failures. Otto Lopez was not given a chance, so not really a failure. There is something about Lopez that the FO feels is missing because in 2 years he has had a total of 1 AB.

Juenger, Tiedemann, Barger and others have done well and had success in their promotions. But they were not ready this year. AAA success next year should get them a shot at the ML team.

Per the Blue Jays transactions Ricky Tiedemann is back on the development list. I assume that means he is headed to Florida. Tiedemann has thrown 78 innings this season plus innings thrown when he was previously on the development list.

I have no knowledge of how long he will stay on the dev list.

In many of the games Tiedemann played he gave up 0 ER. Dunedin 3, Vancouver 4 and NH 3 games. So 10 of 18 games. The Jays are handling him very well IMO.

He doesnt have power and his defense is not that great.

He is a lot like Harold Ramirez. He is on his 4th team since the Jays, and of course, doing pretty well with the Rays. But he has played 40 of his 90 games at DH.

Michael Turconi who has started well with Dunedin has been bumped up to Vancouver.

Yeah, Ducey has that right. He really doesn’t have a position that he can play well. Having said that, I’d be optimistic that he’d provide about what Merrifield would give the Jays next year or better at a fraction of the cost. He has half the magic elixir - he oozes flexibility but seriously lacks veteraness so he’s probably not getting a shot.

It was a good night on the farm, with all four of the affiliates scoring 7 runs plus.  Gabriel Martinez doubled and homered and is now hitting .355/.437/.565 in Vancouver.  He just turned 20 a month ago.  Dasan Brown doubled and walked twice and is now hitting .276/.373/.379.  He turns 21 next month.

Excellent results for G-Mart. The OBP for Brown is great but I don’t see how it’s sustainable unless he substantially reduces his K rate (which seems to be one of the hardest things for a prospect to do).

I agree, greenfrog.  Martinez is going to be ready for promotion to double A either at the beginning of 2023 or soon thereafter, whereas Brown is going to take longer.  Brown was promoted to Vancouver on July 22 and hit .226/.314/.258 in 35 PAs in July. with 10 Ks and 1 XBH.  In August, he's hit .294/.394/.424 with 33 Ks and 9 XBH in 99 PAs.  The K rate is still too high, but he's evidently hitting the ball harder and if he can get the K rate down to 27% (as he did in Low A ball earlier this year), he'll be ready for promotion.  Side note, he was hit by pitches 7 times in August; in previous months in his career, it was 2-4 times per month.  I guess they are pitching him inside more.
