The Buffalo Bisons led 14-6 headed to the ninth inning and they brought in Trevor Schwecke to finish the game. He did gave up a couple of runs but saved an inning for the bullpen. One of the reasons they needed pitching help was that Jimmy Robbins was used in relief. He threw 20 pitches, one strike and 19 balls, and didn't get an out. New Hampshire lost a game they were winning. Dunedin won, scoring 10 runs. Hamilton's Bryce Arnold had a big game. Vancouver were blown out.

NOTES

Mitch White started for Buffalo and went three innings. He ony gave up one run but he had seven baserunners, four hits and three walks. Jimmy Robbins came out of the bullpen here and it didn't work. He threw 20 pitches, one strike and 19 balls. He walked four and hit a batter.

The story of the game was the Bisons bats, 16 hits and every starter had one. Seven hitters had two hits. Rafael Lantigua had an unusual line, one hit, four RBI. He had two sac flies and three walks.

Steward Berroa, Alan Roden and Riley Tirotta homered for New Hampshire. Rainer Nunez had three hits, Roden, Damiano Palmegiani and Jorge Sosa had two each.

Abdiel Mendoza started and gave up three runs in 4.2 innings. With the trades of pitchers the Jays have had to signed some free agent pitchers to fill in. Two of them gave up five runs and turned a 5-3 lead into an 8-6 loss.

Three Vancouver pitchers gave up ten runs between them. The C's had just five hits, Dasan Brown had two.

CJ Van Eyk started for Dunedin and he did run into some trouble. He was charged with five runs over three innings. Van Eyk's fastball averaged 92.5. He only got two whiffs on 22 swings which is not good. Is it part of his TJ recovery or has he lost something with the surgery? Connor O'Halloran made his pro debut and threw two innings. He walked one and struck out one. O'Halloran threw just one 4 seam fastball, he mainly threw sliders and changeups. Maybe he is working on those pitches. Michael Brewer finished up, he had 13 whiffs on 26 swings.

The Jays had 12 hits. Undrafted free agent Bryce Arnold hit his first pro home run. He also singled and doubled and drove in four runs. Arnold has had three multi hit games in his last four. Roque Salinas had three hits too, he is having a nice second half of the season, hitting .380 in August having hit .292 in July. Braden Barry and Tucker Toman had two hits each.

3 Hr for Roden this month. 2 at home and 1 on the road. Pretty good. Is the home park dimensions helping him? Or something else.

Enmanuel Bonilla went 4 for 5 with a HR today (#3). He is now hitting .310/.412/.435 on the season. Hopefully he continues closing strong.

There is a good chance Bonilla will be the Jays top prospect in a few years.

Bonilla, if he keeps his stats to a similar level, will probably be ranked 2nd by BA. They love their toolsy young prospects. Guzman looks pretty good as well. He’s had a strong season. Seems small but Guzman will hopefully have a growth spurt. He’s listed as 5’7”

We'll see. Bonilla is essentially the same age as Nimmala (only 2 months younger) and is behind him in assignment (DSL vs FCL). I get the impression that Nimmala has much louder tools right now.

Bonilla actually didn't even make BA's updated post-draft Jays' Top 30 list which is very surprising to me (considering they generally value big-name IFA guys a lot). That kind of scares me because it suggests to me that his tools may not be as loud as the price-tag would indicate.

Bonilla is ranked 137th in the DSL by wRC+ and hasn't shown the raw power he supposedly possesses so.... Some caution is very likely warranted. The DSL is very much a hitter's league.

With that said the Jays have one of their deepest pools of talent in the DSL in years so hopefully one or two continue to develop when they come stateside next year.

Ok Roden's numbers are getting interesting now.

Alan Roden homered again tonight. Another 2 for 4 night. OPS now up to .933 in AA. He's on an absolute heater.

Leo Jimenez was also 3 for 5 with a HR.

Bonilla is hitting .415/.528/.634 in August so hopefully he just needed to find his groove.

As Marc said, while the hitting in the DSL is usually unremarkable, this season several Jays prospects have hit well and earned another look stateside next year.

You can watch Roden's homers on his page at milb.com. I think he's learning how to pull the ball with authority. He will be 24 at the end of this year, and it looks to me like he is ready to compete for a major league job in 2024.
Nigel - Sunday, August 20 2023 @ 09:44 AM EDT (#434679) #
I don’t know if Roden will be ready for 2024, but he was literally mikes ahead of his high(ish) college pick contemporaries in Vancouver in terms of overall plate approach (strike zone control, pitch selection and pitch identification). It would be good to see those skills translate to the major league roster. I have questions about the amount of power that he will ultimately show, but he doesn’t have to hit for a lot to be successful.

"he was literally mikes ahead".

Thanks, Nigel. I needed that.

Bonilla's 130 wRC+ is 60th of 303 now. That's good, but...

.409 BABIP is 10th.
.125 ISO 130th
12.2 BB% 182nd
23.5 K% 194th
0.52 BB/K 202nd

He's on the upswing, but there are some issues to keep an eye on.

How many games are left in tbe milb season? Roden getting pushed up to AAA to end the year would be nice.
Nigel - Sunday, August 20 2023 @ 11:12 AM EDT (#434685) #
Ah, but is “mikes ahead” a good thing? I certainly meant that as a compliment but beauty is in the eye of the beholder:)

I think we all know who the top hitter in the DSL is for the Jays - and it isn’t Bonilla:)
greenfrog - Sunday, August 20 2023 @ 11:29 AM EDT (#434689) #
Another positive about Bonilla’s 1162 OPS August is that he has a 9:10 BB:K ratio this month. This could just be a hot month — or it could be that he’s rapidly getting the hang of this pro baseball thing.

It’s interesting that they are starting to use Orelvis at 2B, considering that position is more secure in ‘24 than 3B. Does it say something about his defense, or are they merely anticipating having another 3B next year and want to make him as versatile as possible?
John Northey - Sunday, August 20 2023 @ 09:03 PM EDT (#434744) #
I suspect they are using Orelvis at 2B just to see if he can do it at a reasonable level given the flux at 2B and 3B right now. SS won't be open until 2026 at the earliest (and hopefully not for years after that if they can sign Bo long term) so getting everyone who can play SS to learn 2B/3B is a smart move. Ideally you see if they can handle CF too. 2B is a position that players are wrecked at quite often (few players, even HOF'ers, make it into their mid 30's at 2B) so you want lots of options there.

In 2024 DH, 3B and LF could be open, 2B a battle between kids and Espinal/Biggio. Right now Olervis has only shown he can play 3B out of those, Barger has 46 career games at 2B to go with 84 at 3B, 141 at SS, 14 in RF, 10 at 1B. Schneider has 129 at 2B, 109 at 3B, 79 in LF, 5 in RF, 1 at SS, 9 at 1B in the minors. Those 2 have lots of paths to the majors. Orelvis has only SS/3B (and now 2 games at 2B with 2 errors in those 2 games). Tanner Morris is another one to watch, with 137 games at 2B, 99 at 3B, 46 at SS, and 1 in LF. Rafael Lantigua is worth watching (885 OPS in AAA at 25) with 221 at 2B, 92 at 3B, 85 at SS, 61 in LF, 20 in CF, 17 in RF - he clearly knows his way around the diamond. Heck, Spencer Horwitz has 246 at 1B, 66 in LF, and 6 at 2B. The Jays sure want guys to be able to handle anything once they get called up.
