Vancouver Canadians

The Vancouver Canadians have never been held hitless since joining the Toronto Blue Jays farm system. Still, there is a first time for everything as Spokane Chiefs starter Anderson Pilar threw seven scoreless innings, struck out 13 and reliever Brayan Castillo slammed the door for the last two innings to allow Spokane to get the 4-0 win.

Devereaux Harrison was solid for the Canadians surrendering three runs over his six innings of work. He struck out six and didn’t walk a batter. The offence mustered only four walks and didn’t get a runner into scoring position.

The Canadians are back at it today at 7:05 p.m. with Kevin Miranda on the hill against Spokane’s Mason Green. This series is tied 1-1.

Buffalo Bisons

With recent major league duty with Toronto, Nathan Lukes had himself a day at the plate as did Orelvis Martinez as they both had two runs scored and 3 hits in a game that saw Buffalo blast Syracuse 14-2.

Lukes had two RBI’s while Martinez had five in a game where the Bisons scored three in the fourth, sixth and ninth innings as well as two in the first and seventh.

The fourth inning proved to be the turning point when the two errors off a ground ball touched off a three-run rally in which Lukes drove in Mason McCoy and Jamie Ritchie. Spencer Horwitz was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded for his 68th RBI of the season and extending the lead to three.

The Bisons and Mets will meet on Thursday evening at 6:35 p.m. for the third game of their six-game series in Syracuse.

New Hampshire Fisher Cats

The New Hampshire Fisher Cats couldn’t extend their rally in the ninth and fell 4-2 to the Binghamton Rumble Ponies on Wednesday night.

Will Robertson hit a two-run homer, his 13th of the season. The 25-year-old outfielder has hit three home runs in his last four games but it still wasn’t enough.

Binghamton tagged Ricky Tiedemann (0-4) for two runs in the second. He is struggling at the Double-A level and is still in search of his first win. He only pitched 1.2 innings yesterday and allowed two runs, three hits and three walks over three strikeouts, receiving the loss.

The Rumble Ponies starting right-hander Tyler Stuart (3-2), threw six scoreless innings over two hits and no walks with six strikeouts to pick up the win.

Tonight it’s RHP Michael Dominguez (1-0, 3.97 ERA) for New Hampshire against RHP Luis Moreno (8-5, 4.88 ERA) for Binghamton. Game time is 7:05 pm

Dunedin Blue Jays

Dunedin’s game last night was suspended due to rain. Thursday’s game will resume as a seven-inning contest. Gates will open at 4 pm for a 5 pm first pitch.

Sheesh - I really hope the Jays find a spot for Lukes next season, his 331/410/543 looks really good, and he seemed solid when given a shot here. Martinez in AAA is now hitting 272/342/515 which is very solid for a 21 year old at that level. He just might take over 3B in 2024, maybe in a semi-platoon with Barger (23 years old) who is hitting 256/366/417 in AAA. Both can cover SS as needed while Barger has had time in RF this year and both had a bit of time at 2B (but weren't good there). Schneider could cover 2B though if the Jays dump Espinal (Schneider/Biggio sharing 2B would be OK imo).

A bench of UT Schneider, OF Lukes, IF Clement, C Kirk would definitely be cost effective next year. Or this year for that matter.

I could see Martinez at 3B next season, hitting 8th in the lineup.

Chapman will probably be qualified and the Jays will get a comp pick. They need to restock the farm system a bit now.

Schneider and Kirk for the 2024 bench sounds good to me. Lukes is probably fine if the new left fielder is a bopper. But I think it's possible that Kiermaier comes back, in which case I'd want a serious RH bat as the 4th outfielder.

I don't have any confidence that Clement can be better than what you'd reasonably expect from Espinal in 2024. And neither of them have the upside to be the starting 3rd baseman. Barger and Martinez do have that upside, and I'd want to configure the roster such that both of them can be on it (tho not necessarily immediately on opening day).

Remember Edwin playing 3rd? That's where Orelvis is at now.

If Orelvis is as bad defensively at 3B as EE then he should not play there. I remember losing some games due to EE's errors.

bpoz, Orelvis is 21 years old. He will get better. He's just not there yet. Edwin was 30 when they moved him off 3rd.

I guess the point is that if Orelvis fielding is where Edwin's was, and he's hitting for a 106 wRC+ in triple A, he's not ready for a major league job of any kind on a club that is intending to compete.  How is Barger's defence at third base?

Only watched Barger at 3rd a couple of times. The only thing that stood out is he has a good arm.

Orelvis has been playing second, which seems particularly bizarre for a big guy with a strong arm. The Jays don't seem to know where to play him, which makes me worried he won't be good at any position. Pick a spot, and let him be as good as he can there. Chasing versatility with a guy who's probably not going to be a great fielder anywhere seems like a dubious strategy.
