There were two walk off wins for the lower two teams. In Vancouver Garrett Spain hit his second home run of the night to walk off Spokane. And in Dunedin Nicolas Deschamps capped a big game for him with a sac fly to win the game. Buffalo's bullpen lost a lead for the second night in a row while Chad Dallas blew up good in New Hampshire's loss.

NOTES

It was another bullpen game for Buffalo and Zac Pop and Connor Cooke each conceded a couple of runs in the early innings. The Bisons were down 5-1 leading to the seventh. In that inning Spencer Horwitz and Ernie Clement singled in runs while Orelvis Martinez doubled in a run. Tanner Morris followed with a two run home run to give Buffalo the lead. The teams traded runs in the eighth but the Bisons took a one run lead into the ninth. And just like Friday, the bullpen couldn't close the door and the Mets won.

Nathan Lukes and Spencer Horwitz each had three hits and they both are hitting .338 for the season.

Chad Dallas continued his record of being very good or very bad. On Saturday it was very bad, 12 hits and seven runs in 4.2 innings. Trailing 9-1 in the sixth Phil Clarke and Michael Turconi homered to make it a 9-4 game. But that was as close as NH could get.

The Fisher Cats had just four hits, Clarke had two of them.

Vancouver built an 8-4 lead headed to the ninth. Cade Doughty, Ryan McCarty and Garrett Spain had all hit home runs to build the lead. Unfortunately Spokane scored four runs in the ninth to tie the game. That set Garrett Spain up to hit his second home run of the game to walk off Spokane. It was his third hit of the game. McCarty, Doughty, Peyton Williams and Jommer Hernandez had two hits each.

Rafael Sanchez started and went six innings. He gave up three runs, two earned.

Dunedin were outhit 9-5 but still won, scoring six runs with those five hits. Glenn Santiago hit a home run. Nicolas Deschamps had a big game. He was hit by a pitch in the second inning, went to third on a single and then stole home as part of a double steal. He had an RBI single in the fourth. He walked in the sixth, had a sacrifice bunt in the ninth. Then in the eleventh inning with a runner on third, he hit a sac fly to end the game. He was 1-1 with a walk, two sacrifices, two RBI and a steal of home.

Kendry Rojas started and went 4.1 innings, 67 pitches. He struck out six while allowing two runs in three hits.

Our farm has a few shiny prospects like Tiedemann, Orelvis, Barger and Roden who may become decent ML players. Some that are not as shiny like C Doughty, D Palmegiani, C Dallas who are progressing well.

Some of these players could help by becoming regulars or trade pieces.

Young prospects with potential but are moving slow. Nimmala for example due to SSS. Toman & Beltre and many others.

Many names that I have not mentioned but are being talked about when performing well.

One Bison that's quietly having a decent season with the bat is Tanner Morris. Since the end of June, he's at .371/.474/.540. That's brought his season line up to 111 wRC+.

The problem with Morris is that, like many of the upper level infield prospects, he's not overly good defensively.

I was going to make a similar point to Marc. The Jays have several prospects who are hitting well. The hit tool is the biggest and hardest one and if you mastered it you could make it to the major leagues. But many of the Jays best hitters have a flaw. Morris and Horwitz have little power. Guys like Lantigua and Hiraldo, who have some power, are suspect defensively. A team can carry one guy like that, but its hard to carry more than that, and your hitting has to compensate for your shortfalls in other areas.

Marc has put it politely. None of the players mentioned can really play a defensive position at a major league level. Now, if their bat could carry poor defensive contributions then maybe. But I don’t see it. For me Schneider has been the best of this group of marginal prospects for a while because of the broad offensive profile that he might just offer.

Yeah, the defence is why I added "with the bat". Morris is basically a 1 tool guy. A very poor man's Arraez.

Horwitz and Morris are still too babipy for me to get interested in - .390 for Horwitz and .370 for Morris. You knock that down to a solid .300babip in mlb and that's 180pts of ops knocked off for horwitz and 140 for morris - and that's if they can maintain the rest of their AAA numbers in MLB.

And note that while Horwitz has had a solidly over .300babip in milb so far, this .390 is by far his highest. He averGed about a .330babip or so before this year.

You guys are the people to ask, can Lantigua play decent D anywhere? I mean, he’s played six positions this year. That’s a lot even for this organization and it’s versatility fetish.

Presumably, he has some defensive skill, or he wouldn’t still be getting reps at short and in centerfield?
Marc Hulet - Sunday, August 27 2023 @ 04:10 PM EDT (#435209) #
One thing about BABIP is that you can't have an average BABIP when you're a .330-.340 hitter. Look at Bo. Horwitz's BABIP isn't that bad.
uglyone - Sunday, August 27 2023 @ 04:24 PM EDT (#435212) #
True but Bo's an elite MLB hitter with elite babip (.350 consistently) who was an elite prospect with elite power.

I'm hesitant to project any prospect for that kind of mlb babip, even elite ones, let alone borderline prospects like horwitz.

But sure if he can maintain a .350babip in mlb then he'll be productive.

Horwitz is a career .345 BABIP hitter in the minors, so this is hardly an aberration, albeit it's higher than normal. It's not a law that only "elite prospects" can run high BABIP's at the MLB level. Keep in mind that Horwitz has been an elite hitter all throughout the minors, the reason why he's not regarded as an "elite prospect" is because of his non-traditional profile (low-power 1B) and age (even though he lost a full year in 2020 which makes it looks worse). He can clearly hit, hence the BABIP. He's obviously not going to run a .390 BABIP against MLB pitching.
uglyone - Sunday, August 27 2023 @ 05:21 PM EDT (#435227) #
Horwitz has been a good hitter in milb while old for all his levels, not an elite one. He did take a step up closer to elite in AA, thanks to a .220iso power surge, but that's the only time he's done that. He'll need to get back to that kind of power level to be a productice mlb hitter imo.

A .390 babip is way higher than a .345babip of course. And you should never expect a hitter to match his milb babip in mlb.

The front office must be happy they’ll have a cheap and controllable bat or two on the MLB roster in Schneider, Roden, Orelvis, Barger, and/or Horwitz. I’m sure Atkins is “exceptionally” excited about this.
hypobole - Sunday, August 27 2023 @ 06:00 PM EDT (#435232) #
Are you not happy with this?
Gerry - Sunday, August 27 2023 @ 06:01 PM EDT (#435233) #
It is hard to judge defensive ability based on occasional looks. You could be watching a game and see a great play or see an error. But you need to judge defense over a long period.

Look at Davis Schneider. He didn't have a great defensive reputation coming up but so far he has looked fine at second and in left. But as you continue watching you might notice things both positive and negative that will give you a fuller impression.

As for Lantigua, I don't know for sure how good he is.
greenfrog - Sunday, August 27 2023 @ 06:11 PM EDT (#435234) #
I do think it’s great the Jays have some young position players in the high minors to get excited about. And this may work out well for the front office, if it helps them generate some enthusiasm about 2024 (and some forgetting about what went on in 2021-2023).
