As I do most years here is a summary of the top prospects as seen by assorted popular sites including ours.

A very clear consensus this year on #1 (Ricky Tiedemann), #2 (Orelvis Martinez), and nearly on #3 (Arjun Nimmala).  Makes for the list being a little dull at the top, but more fun as we dig down and get some variation.

The lists I used this year are... MLB Pipeline (30), Baseball America (30), Baseball Prospectus (10), FanGraphs (31), TSN (50 + 13 honourable), Prospects 1500 (50). Fantrax HQ (30), Keith Law (20 + 3 honourable), Batters Box (30 + 11 honourable), BlueJaysNation (34 + 22 honourable), and the slow pokes this year- BlueBirdBanter (40).

Some of these are obviously far more well known and influential than others but I'm after group think, not rating (I might try that later on but it takes years to know if a group did well or not - especially guys like Nimmala who is just out of high school).  Due to more than one being behind a paywall I won't list how each individual group ranked people outside of really bizarre choices.

Guys get missed annually even by the very best.  For example, no one had Davis Schneider as a top 15 last year - heck, the 3 who do list him this year have him 8/8/22 (just 3 had him last year - BP at #18, BJN #22, BB #30).  If you are going to say he is qualified you have to have him ahead of guys like Leo Jimenez who can very easily be a 'never was' imo.

Every list has its oddball - someone no one else listed or none did anywhere near as high. Sometimes they can be right, sometimes there is a reason the group-think had said player sub top 30.  A few this year are...
  • Nimmala - #7 from FanTrax
  • Barriera - #10 from FanGraphs
  • Jimenez - not mentioned on BP, and #24 by FanTrax
  • Roden - not mentioned on BP, and #19 by FanGraphs
  • Bonnila - not mentioned by BP, #21 by Prospects1500
  • Davis Schneider - #3 by Blue Jays Nation

The table has bolding for the leader in each column - Tiedemann is #1 for 1st (all 11 lists), down to Aneudi Escanio who was given honourary status 3 times out of the 4 lists that had an honourable mention section (missed on Keith Law who had just 20 prospects and 3 honourables).

Thanks John.

I am very interested in 20 year old right handed SP Daniel Guerra in the FCL. He did well last year but his stuff may be mediocre.

FYI: I might have gotten the ages wrong in a few cases - did the best I could but got most from FanGraphs list (31 players) and from one of the others (forget which) before going to individual pages when stuck. Let me know and I'll correct any that are wrong.

Figured this would be fun to put out today with no ML game going on. Given how the Jays are starting out, we might need to dream of the future more than we'd like this season.

Is there a way to have this thread bookmarked on the site for easy reference?

Anyone else surprised that Rafael Ohashi isn't anywhere on this list?
John Northey - Friday, April 05 2024 @ 12:59 AM EDT (#444008) #
I suspect his horrid year in Dunedin, repeating A+, killed his status. 6.20 ERA with under 8 k/9 and over 4 BB/9 tends to kill prospect status. Even though he looked amazing before 2023.

Ohashi is on the Vancouver roster.

Thanks for this, love the prospects coverage on this site.

A few other lists I've come across (some legit, others not) for future reference: Jays Journal ESPN (Kiley McDaniel) The Dynasty Guru

We have a few almost ready power hitting prospects. Like Orelvis, Barger, Palmegiani and hopefully Jimenez and Roden.

These guys can compare to Teo, Gurriel, and Jansen who worked out ok. They came up 2018 or so.

Kirk has proven enough. Replacing Bo and Vlad will be very hard. Maybe Nimmala if he does fantastic in 2024 and 2025 then he could be ready 2026 or 2027. Waves of prospects may or may not happen.

We went and got expensive SPs for a very fast rebuild. Ryu, Gausman, Bassit and Berrios who will eventually hit the $20mil/yr mark soon and then use his opt out.

Thank you JC for those 3 extras - the oddity there was Jays Journal putting Arjun Nimmala as #2 over Orelvis Martinez - the only one of the 14 checked who did that. Adding in those 3 shifts things a tiny bit - Enmanuel Bonilla moves up a slot, Adam Macko down one (2 points between them - they are damn close). Kendry Rojas moves down 4 slots behind Josh Kasevich, Spencer Horwitz, Chad Dallas, and Damiano Palmegiani. Chad Dallas moves up 3 slots, Yosver Zulueta up 1 slot, Davis Schneider gets his 2nd 3rd place slot moving him up one. A few more minor 1 or 2 slot shifts but nothing to write home about.

Now that I have those 3 added in this year, it should be easy to add them next year as now I'll be looking for them.

I don't really see Roden as a power prospect. If he succeeds, he'll be more of a Frank Catalonotto-type, I would think.
