Trey Yesavage and Gage Stanifer had 15 K's between them as Vancouver won. Austin Cates had another excellent start and Tucker Toman homered for Dunedin's win. And Brandon Barriera made his first start as he returns from Tommy John surgery. Barriera has not impressed so far in his professional career. Last year was supposed to be a big, prove it, year but he got hurt. Now he needs to show his stuff this season. Buffalo's pitching was awful.

Buffalo 0 Syracuse 18

Altoona at New Hampshire - postponed

Vancouver 10 Tri-City 1

Dunedin 4 St Lucie 0

FCL Phillies 2 FCL Blue Jays 0

Three Stars

Third Star - Cutter Coffey

Second Star - Trey Yesavage

First Star - Nick Goodwin

NOTES

The Buffalo pitching was ugly. Spencer Turnbull started and was charged with five runs in 4.2 innings. He doesn't appear to be major league ready. It got so bad that Rainer Nunez pitched in the bottom of the eighth.

Seven hits for the Bisons, Riley Tirotta and Phil Clarke had two each.

Trey Yesavage struck out nine in five innings. Gage Stanifer struck out six in four innings, that's a combined 15 strikeout, four hitter. If you want to see Yesavage in Vancouver you should go soon, he is likely headed to AA by July.

The C's scored ten runs without the top of the order. Victor Arias was 0-5, Arjun Nimmala struck out four times, Aaron Parker was 1-5. Lower down the order the C's had home runs from Cutter Coffey, Eddie Micheletti and Nick Goodwin. Jackson Hornung had three hits.

Tucker Toman hit a three run home run in the eighth inning to seal the win for Dunedin. Edward Duran had two hits, Peyton Powell had an RBI double and walked twice.

Austin Cates went 5.2 innings for the win. Over his last five games Cates has thrown 21.2 innings with 12 hits, 11 walks and 22 K's. Obviously the walks need to come down but everything else looks good.

The FCL Jays were held to two hits. Brandon Barriera threw two innings.

No surprise that with Sanchez return, Brooks back down to AA.

No word yet on who gets dropped from the Bisons roster for Stefanic. It's a bit of a tricky one. It should probably be McCarty, but Palmegiani could be in danger too. Rivera another possibility but that might leave them short of guys who can actually field SS at the moment.

Catching depth chart now that all the catchers in the org are healthy (asterisk = not really a C anymore):

MLB Kirk 26, Heineman 34
AAA Bethancourt 33, Sanchez 28, Clarke* 27
AA Sharp 23, Stone 23, Brooks 26
A+ Parker 22, Gililand 23, Deschamps 22
A Duran 21, Tibbits 22, Powell* 24, LaRue* 23

Despite his struggles, somehow Palmegiani has a .348 OBP, higher than his mark last year.

I do wonder if something's going on with him physically, 0 HR is the most shocking part of his line.

They may send a pitcher down, or call up/release Turnbull (there are 15 Ps active and only 13 hitters).

Wagner will be back there soon too. I think McCarty ends up being sent back down one way or another, since Rivera's defense is valuable.

Leo is only on the 7-day again, too, and it sounds like Varsho is hitting already so it won't be long for him either.

some guys are gonna have to go fairly soon I think. I'm a little surprised to see both Stefanic and Sanchez staying tbh.

Adam Macko has been added to the Bisons roster.

Cgris McElvain has been added to Vancouver.

Fisher needed 12 pitches to get through the eighth. He looked pretty good.

I imagine he could successfully pitch the ninth as well.

Watched Hechavarria's start. His cutter is pretty good, definitely his best pitch, and he mixes in the change-up against lefties. The 4-seamer touches 97, but sat around 95.

Embarrassing double play for Dunedin in the 6th...Hernandez goes to steal but Chirinos is standing on 2nd. In the confusion, Chirinos runs to 3rd and gets thrown out.

How many players can a AAA ream roster?

Milb gameday has 30 names listed for Buffalo.

Chris McElvain?

Typos keep blowing my mind. I was wondering if that was some kind of nickname or abbreviation.

Including the IL?

Their active roster is showing 29, though it was 28 earlier, and since then Stefanic has been outrighted to Buffalo. I thought the maximum was 28, so it's possible there hasn't been a corresponding move reported.

Rafael Sanchez just pitched a seven inning no hitter for New Hampshire.

Since the new MiLB collective agreement: AAA and AA can have 28 active. Both A-ball leagues allow 30 active. No limit on ILs. Not sure on Rookie ball or DSL limits.

I guess gameday isn't 100% up to date then but I'm pretty sure it has 14 position players and 16 pitchers listed.

Regardless of what is allowed - the Jays will soon need to start cutting at all levels so the players most likely to help either in '25 or the future can play. Loperfido is the only guy in AAA with 200+ PA, 5 more with 150+ (Orelvis, Robertson, Tirotta, and Schneider). 5 more in the 100's (Rivera, Stefanic, Palmegiani, Clase, and Sanchez). The rest are rotting on the bench mostly. So, much like the majors there is a massive logjam. So who should play?
  • Sub 25's: these guys are legit prospects and should play everyday or be sent to AA so they can: Pinango, Clase, Orelvis, Schreck, Jimenez, Rivera, Nunez. Note: Clase in majors, final option years for Jimenez & Orelvis
  • Have ML experience, might be useful as backups when needed: Wagner, Loperfido, Sanchez, Stefanic, Bethancourt
Anyone else is just spare parts to fill in the roster imo and has to really earn their time. Robertson has (27 yrs old 289/411/556), Palmegiani hasn't (143/342/190 as a 1B/3B at age 25 - he looked good in '23 at age 23 with a 842 OPS between AA/AAA but hasn't looked nearly as good since, and as a 14th round pick reaching AAA is pretty good as few reach the majors from that deep in the draft).

I'd probably go with Sanchez/Bethancourt catching; IF of Nunez-Orelvis-Jimenez (if healthy) or Rivera-Tirotta (26 with 812 OPS) and put in Stephanic wherever needed and rotate him around all IF positions ala Clement; OF of Loperfido-Pinango-Schreck-Robertson with one of the 4 as DH everyday. Any others are 'meh' and should be on the 'to be released' pile imo (please correct me if I'm wrong on someone).

165 total player limit across all levels excluding DSL (which is definitely another reason the two DSL levels are valuable).

Dasan Brown in LF with Jay Harry in CF and Doughty at SS. Certainly an interesting defensive alignment in New Hampshire's 2nd game.
