It was a no loss Saturday on the farm. New Hampshire had good hitting and good pitching leading to a nice win. The same can be said of Dunedin. Vancouver won in extra innings with a walk off home run from Sean Keys. The FCL Jays also had an extra innings win in their playoff semi final. Buffalo were rained out mid game. Both DSL teams also won.

NOTES

The Buffalo game just lasted 2.2 innings. Adam Kloffenstein was the starter and got his 2.2 innings in before the rain.

Trey Yesavage threw 48 pitches to complete four perfect innings with five K's. Yesavage threw 93 innings for East Carolina last season so you would think he would be able to throw at least 120 this season. He has thrown 71 this season with around ten starts left. At five innings per start he should get to 120 innings. His last three starts have been 2.1, 3 and now 4 innings. Or for number of pitches, 64, 52 and 48.

Jackson Hornung doubled, homered and walked. He is hitting .316 in Aa after hitting .308 in Vancouver. His OPS is .890, higher than his Vancouver OPS. Has Hornung become a prospect? He obviously can hit, the most important tool. He does strikeout around 30% of the time. Ten of his 30 hits in AA have gone for extra innings. Having previously been a catcher he know plays LF and 1B. At age 24, you never know. Victor Arias had two hits to bring his AA average above .200.

Sean Keys hit a two out, two run home run in the bottom of the tenth for a walk off win for Vancouver. The C's had just six hits in the game, Arjun Nimmala had two of them. Three pitchers pitched three plus innings each.

Dunedin scored seven runs with six hits and eleven walks. Manuel Beltre went 3-5 with three RBI. Kendry Chirinos was 2-3 with two walks. Both walks were with the bases loaded giving him two RBI.

Austin Cates went five shutout innings with six K's. Cates has a 1.20 ERA in four July starts. This is after putting up a 2.12 ERA in June. Could he see Vancouver before the end of the season?

The FCL Jays semi-final went to extra innings in a one game playoff to get to the final. The Jays drove in two runs with singles in the top of the inning. The Astros lead off hitter in the bottom of the inning had an infield single. The next hitter delivered a run with a sac fly. Tying run on first. Another single moved the tying run to second and the winning run on first. But Diego Dominguez bore down and got a pop up and a ground ball. The three game final starts tomorrow. The Jays started Troy Guthrie who went five shutout innings with two hits allowed. Guthrie could see Dunedin when the FCL season ends.

In the DSL Juan Sanchez stayed hot. He doubled twice and singled and drove in three runs. He is hitting .340 and his OPS is over 1.000. Sanchez has split his time between SS and 3B. I am sure we will see him in North America next season. He will turn 18 in the off season. His infield partner Elaineiker Coronado is trying to prove that you can walk off the island. The Venezuelan has 40 walks to 20 K's. He has five multi hit games in the last seven and that has pushed his average over .300. He doesn't have much power, just three doubles and one triple. He too is 17.

For any Athletic subscribers, nice piece from Bannon on data-oriented Sam Shaw. Some bits:

What I had last year was I made a lot of contact,” he said. “I controlled the zone, I didn’t swing and miss too much. But my damage, my power, was not very good.”

For him, it’s swing speed, comparable swing paths, barrel rates, exit velocities and contact quality.

That mindset made Shaw the perfect candidate to attend Driveline Baseball for an offseason boot camp. He spent a week at the data-driven player development lab in Washington state. They broke down his swing in a batting cage filled with flashing cameras and computer monitors, looking for imperfections and concocting a plan to improve his bat speed and power potential. Shaw ate more, hit the gym more and swung with a weighted bat.

I loved how Shaw used to eat ice cream out of the helmet at Canadians games as a kid and still has one. I remember in the late 70's getting Jays hats at DQ with ice cream in them. Ah, the fun of being a kid. Cool that a person who went to the games is now a player at those games.
