NOTES

Buffalo's pitching was not up to the job on Thursday. Grant Rogers had a rough first start last week and he was on the mound for start number two. It didn't start well. The first four hitters he faced reached base and three of them scored. A single and a double started the second inning and now he had allowed four runs. After the fourth run he retired eight of the next nine hitters. In four innings he walked two and struck out two.

Joe Mantiply followed and he was charged with one run in two innings. Jorge Alcala gave up four runs in the seventh. Adam Macko pitched a clean eighth.

The Bisons used two home runs to score their first three runs. Brandon Valenzuela hit a solo home run in the second inning. Eloy Jimenez added a two run shot in the third. Josh Rivera walked with the bases loaded in the eighth. That was followed by a Carlos Mendoza fielders choice and a two run single by Jon Clase.

Carlos Mendoza reached base five times. He had a hit, walked three times and reached on the fielders choice. Eloy Jimenez had two hits, Josh Kasevich had a hit and walked twice. Clase had a hit and a walk.

By my count, there are 124 players on the full-season teams (not on the 60-day DLs), and another 25 sitting in extended spring right now... meaning the club can bring up to 16 players over from the DSL to fill in the FCL roster in May - assuming they want to max out the 165-man limit.

Some players currently MIA but included in my count of the 25 in extended include Victor Arias (off-season shoulder surgery), Samuel Colmenares, David Beckles, Brock Tibbitts, Yondrei Rojas, Silvano Hechavarria, Rafael Sanchez, and Hedbert Perez.

Players that could move from the DSL include Franklin Rojas, Angel Guzman, Randy Soto, Kennew Blanco, Pascual Archila, Rafael Flores, Juan Sanchez (confirmed already in extended spring), Angel Rivero, Roberto Castellanos, Edgar Gallegos, Michael de la Cruz, Victor Espiritu, Juan Ramirez, Edrwin Veras, Johandi Medina, Moon Seo-jun.

Injury updates from Shi Davidi at Sportsnet.

Righty Jake Bloss, recovering from reconstructive elbow surgery, is trending well with his current buildup. … Lefty Ricky Tiedemann, who began camp feeling healthy after undergoing his own elbow surgery, was shut down in late February with elbow soreness and is progressing slowly. … Outfielder Victor Arias is still recovering from surgery on his non-throwing shoulder last fall. He should be in rehab games by the month’s end or early May before he rejoins New Hampshire. … Infielder Adrian Pinto is also bound for the Fisher Cats once he finishes his rehab progression after visa issues delayed his arrival to camp. … Righty Silvano Hechavarria is being built up slowly after experiencing some elbow soreness last fall. The plan for him is to be in Vancouver by May. … Righty Micah Bucknam is likely to miss the season after exiting a game with an elbow injury during the second week of March. As an advanced college arm, the 22-year-old had a chance to move through the system quickly.

Jojo Parker had a tough start to his pro career, 3 K's in an 0-4 night. Blaine Bullard had a better night, a triple to the wall and an infield single.

Nimmala doubled in his next AB. Stanifer got shelled in his first start. Normally nothing to worry about, but I saw two of his spring outings and his stuff didn’t look nearly as electric as last year. Hopefully he’s healthy.

Really good to see Maroudis with 3 clean innings. Given how his return from TJ went last year, I figured they must've liked what they saw for them to be confident enough to move him up to Vancouver.

Guthrie also throws 3 perfect innings.

Stanifer had what I call a typical Stanifer start. I say typical because his command came and went. Stanifer got six up and six down through two innings. But he lost it in the third inning, three walks, a hit, a wild pitch and then a grand slam led to five runs in. Stanifer walked one more before he was pulled after 2.2 innings. He threw 60 pitches, 29 strikes and 31 balls.

That's the Stanifer I remember from last season, some days or in some games his command just vanishes.
