Buffalo and Vancouver were in the winner's circle on Tuesday. New Hampshire and Dunedin were betrayed by their bullpens.

Reigning Northwest League Pitcher of the Week Nolan Perry dazzled again at Nat Bailey Stadium.

Buffalo 5 Lehigh Valley 4
Somerset 8 New Hampshire 7
Vancouver 3 Eugene 0
Clearwater 10 Dunedin 8

*** 3 Stars!!! ***

1. Nolan Perry, Vancouver

2. Yorman Licourt, Dunedin

3. Josh Kasevich, Buffalo

Notes

Willie McIver led the Herd with three hits, including an RBI single. Josh Kasevich drove in two with an RBI triple and RBI single and walked twice. Je'Von Ward walked three times. Josh Rivera hit a hot smash to short which rolled away into the outfield in the 10th to drive in the tying and winning runs. Pat Gallagher put up three zeros and allowed just one hit while striking out three. Devereaux Harrison, Conor Larkin and Jesse Hahn allowed a run apiece after working three, two and one inning(s) respectively. Hayden Juenger gave up a run in the 10th but got the victory.

Jose Burgos hit a two-run homer and was 2-for-2 with a walk while Victor Arias was 3-for-3 with a double and a free pass. Sean Keys singled, took one for the team and had an RBI groundout. Jay Harry had an RBI double. Adrian Pinto and Jace Bohrofen were 1-for-5 and Arjun Nimmala walked twice but the three of them combined for eight strikeouts at the top of the order. Chris McElvain coughed up three runs, two of them homers, over five innings on five hits and two walks. He struck out three and split his eight outs in play evenly on the ground and in the air. Aaron Munson was charged with a blown save after giving up two runs over two innings. Kelena Sauer got a hold despite a run allowed over one inning. Yondrei Rojas blew the save and took the loss with two runs allowed over two-thirds of an innings.

Jonathan Todd nailed down his fourth save of the season for Vancouver.

Monty's Mounties were held to four hits but a fielder's choice from Jacob Sharp to drive in a Manny Beltre single in the third was all they needed. Carter Cunningham walked, went to second on a wild pitch, stole third and scored on another wild pitch in the fourth. Cunningham clubbed his 10th homer of the year in the sixth to cap off the scoring. Maddox Latta went 2-for-2 with two walks and stole a base. Reigning Northwest League Pitcher of the Week Nolan Perry gave up a leadoff double on the first pitch of the game but was unfazed by that. In the third, the Emeralds had a pair of singles but Perry picked off the runner at second to end that rally. He allowed just four hits and one walk in a career-high six innings and racked up eight Ks. His strike 3 pitches clocked in a 79, 79, 94, 79, 94 and 83. Jonathan Todd was not there for the BS either as he mowed down all nine hitters he faced, three by strikeout, for the save.

Yorman Licourt slugged his seventh home run of the year, a two-run shot, and also doubled and singled. Aldo Gaxiola connected for a three-run shot, his sixth, and also singled. Eric Snow singled twice and walked twice and Juan Sánchez had a two-run triple and a walk. Austin Smith singled and walked and Blaine Bullard was 0-for-5. Jake Cook and JoJo Parker walked once in their five trips to ths plate. Two of the four runs Blake Purnell gave up came off a home run. He pitched five innings in which he yielded eight hits and two walks while striking out four. Luis Victorino and Josbel Garcia gave up three runs apiece over the last three innings. Both were charged with blown saves and Garcia was tagged for the loss.

Ah so this is why Nimmala got promoted despite some holes in his hitting line:

Arjun Nimmala's operation is simple but explosive. The quality of contact leap this year is eye-popping.

Avg EV: 88.5➡️91.4
EV90: 103.8➡️108
Hard Hit: 39%➡️50%

Still just 20 years old for the entire season and is settling into AA. Poised to climb on our top 100 update

There are quite a few pitchers that are doing well enough to be promoted not just Nolan Perry. I followed Perry a lot before his injury in 2024. His velo was 93mph but he had a lot of different pitches which allowed him to have some success. The extra velo (96/97 I believe) has made him much better.

The question is how did he gain the extra velo and can others like N Perez, T Guthrie and others also do this.

Perry is a special case- elite strikeout rate, good control, very low hit rate, and excellent scouting markers.  And he's now built up to 6 innings in a start.  He could easily emerge as an ace, and give the club a formidable pitching staff in the next few years.

Is it possible that we’re looking at another Yesavage type situation with Perry? He is so dominant at high A, could he help the big team later this season?

CJ Van Eyk is starting for Buffalo today so scratch him off your bingo card.

Personally I think Josh Fleming is the most likely call up. He has been pitching as well as anyone and you can add him to the 40 man roster and take him off the next day if needed.

Sanchez starting to show some adjustments to A now.

First 15gms: 65pa, 9.2b%, 30.8k%, .158bip, .103avg, .017iso, 0wrc+
Last 14gms: 60pa, 10.0b%, 26.7k%, .314bip, .245avg, .208iso, 111wrc+

A lot of it could just be babip regression, but he's also made a solid cut to his K rate at the same time he's started to show his legit power.

Obviously that 2nd line there is a very impressive one for an 18yr old SS in A ball, so hopefully he can keep it up.

krose yeah he's so good right now that he could definitely deservedly be promoted to AA, at which point MLB is just a hop and a skip away.

he's a year older than Yesavage was, but that should only mean they'd be less hesitant to promote him you'd think. unless they're more worried about whether his arm can take it.

Trey 2025 (21)

A: 7gms, 4.8ip/gm, 43.3k%, 6.3b%, .267bip, 57era-, 52fip-, 41xfip-
A+: 4gms, 4.3ip/gm, 47.8k%, 15.9b%, .130bip, 36era-, 69fip-, 47xfip-
AA: 8gms, 3.8ip/gm, 38.0k%, 9.1b%, .295bip, 117era-, 68fip-, 75xfip-
AAA: 6gms, 2.9ip/gm, 36.1k%, 15.3b%, .257bip, 81era-, 53fip-, 83xfip-
MLB: 3gms, 4.8ip/gm, 25.8k%, 11.3b%, .333bip, 79era-, 55fip-, 77xfip-

Perry 2026 (22)

A: 5gms, 4.2ip/gm, 41.0k%, 7.7b%, .189bip, 38era-, 53fip-, 59xfip-
A+: 4gms, 5.3ip/gm, 47.4k%, 7.9b%, .303bip, 10era-, 38fip-, 51xfip-

Statswise, at least, he wasn't quite as dominant in A as Trey was, but in A+ so far he's actually been significantly more dominant than Trey was.

Nimmala came out of todays game after he beat out a single to short, probably leg related.

I imagine Perry gets at least 5 or 6 starts at Vancouver - that seems to be the magical number the past couple of years before a starter gets moved up a level.

There are definitely starters that could hit AA by mid-season on merit like Guerra, Thompson, and possibly King. There isn't really much pushing up from Dunedin to Vancouver, or from New Hampshire to Buffalo, though.

How much do the Jays want to push pitchers coming off TJ surgery. They are unlikely to have him pitch in September, say.

Here's something interesting from a FG chat. Gawlowski on ball changes (which I'd never heard mentioned before):

"We don’t know what’s changed exactly. But homers are up dramatically (nearly 100% in some leagues) everywhere Double-A and lower, in a way that almost has to be ball related. Until we find out exactly what’s happening, I think it’s worth taking big jumps in power with a grain of salt."

Looking up Nimmala's numbers in AA, while his power hasn't shown up at all yet, there are other significant shifts: he's swinging more and making more contact. Contact is one of the earliest things to stabilize, so the fact his contact rate is 78% in AA when it's been 73 and 71% in A+ is a fairly promising sign.
