Thirty is the mark when a conscutive-games hitting streak really first bears noticing. Oh, 28 is a nice number -- "halfway to DiMaggio" and all that. But Ryan Zimmerman of the Washington Nationals is at the big three-oh now.

Zimmerman matched the great George Brett's 30-game streak in 1980 for the longest by a third baseman in the last three decades. In these the aughts, the only other 30-game streaks have been posted by stalwart Moises Alou in 2007, the unlikely Willy Taveras in 2006 and the finest hitter of his generation, Albert Pujols, in 2003. None of them reached 31, though three others did that and more -- Luis Castillo had a 35-game hit streak in 2002; Chase Utley also had a 35-game hit streak, but in 2006; and Jimmy Rollins had a 38-game hit streak spread over two seasons in 2005-06.

Will Zim? And how far does the kid go? Place your bets, make your predictions, presuppose your wild suppositions ... and -- bear with me, Ex-pos fans -- pay attention to those Nats!

I can see it getting broken off after he gets 35, as he is going for 36.

None of them reached 31.

Neither will Zimmerman. Barry Zito shuts him down Wednesday afternoon. Z stops Z...

Did I mention that Roy Halladay is a Living God?

Jamie Campbell had one sweet quote tonight - it made me genuinely laugh out loud. With respect to Swisher being called to hit for Matsui who unexpectedly left the game, Darrin says to Jamie "What do you say when the manager calls your name to come pinch hit against Doc?" Campbell: "Uhhhhhh, me?".

Magpie: When my GF arrived home last night I just looked at her and said "Roy Halladay is a god".  I feel we are probably not alone in our sentiments.

Doc sure brought his A game and could not have picked a better night to do so. It's nice when the man goes 6-1 while he is "gearing up".

Final predictions on Aaron Hill's final batting line? I'm going crazy - he's going to finish .331/.392/.515 and be the 2nd consecutive AL 2B MVP.

Err... It's too early to be posting. I thought I was in the game day thread...

Zimmerman doesn't strike me as a pure contact style hitter, so i'll pick a nice number like 33 and say that's as high as he gets.

think you missed a few game hit streaks.

Luis Castillo had a 35 game hit streak in 2002.
Chase Utley had a 35 game hit streak in 2006.
Jimmy Rollins had a 38 game hit streak in 2005-06.

I believe you misinterpreted the last line in the ESPN article.  It is that it is the 4th longest behind the 3 not mentioned but also tied with those 3 at 30.

I'll go out on a limb and say he breaks the record, ends up with 61 games.

Or not.

By the way, today is Barry Zito's birthday.  Do pitchers throw better on their b-days or do they lose all control?  It would definitely not be cool if Zimmerman's hitting streak was ended on an 0-1 with 3 walks.

Ryan Zimmerman walking three times in a game? I think Vegas would set the bar high on that!

I have Zimmerman reaching but not surpassing Molitor ... 39, right?

Bailey, good catch and you're exactly right about my misreading the article's final graf. I thought that looked wrong! I will fix it ...

youngid -- are you being ironic or did you pull that number out of thin air? 61, of course, is the professional (minor league) record for a hit streak -- in 1933, by none other than Joe DiMaggio of the San Francisco Seals.

According to Wikipedia Joe Wilhoit had  a 69 game hitting streak in the Western League in 1919. Maybe it's not official or recognized?

Thus endeth the streak. And The Curse of the Batter's Box Prediction thread is born!

If anybody has a good curse for the Yankees or Red Sox lets have it :)
