No matter what happens today, the Jays have achieved a passing grade in the midterm. If some crazed optimist had told you exactly one month ago that the 7-15 Blue Jays would be guaranteed no worse than a .500 record and a split in this series after today's game, you would have laughed.

Can Cory Lidle make it seven in a row? Will Stewart, Wells and Wilson continue to own Boomer? I have no idea, but it will be fun to watch.

The Yankees have got to hang in there, they can't get down on themselves, young teams are going to go through these growing pains. Things will look up, just keep 'yer chin up, you'll see.

7 doubles and 5 runs in 5+, and Boomer's off to the showers... Hahahaahahaha!! Justice is served!

Scary moment in the 9th as Vernon goes hard into the right-centre field wall. Almost made a spectacular catch but the ball hit off the heel of his glove for a lead off Jeter triple. Wells was shaken up but he stayed in the game.

Cliff Politte comes into his second straight game to try and pick it up for Politte.

That shows you how smart Vernon is. Was he hurt or was he buying Polite more time to warm-up?

If the Jays were to win convincingly tomorrow......could we say i's their biggest win since '93? I realize it's very early in the season, but the very impressive series against the Yanks combined with the already hot bats and being over .500 would mean a lot to the young team. Enough of a confidence boost to move them into 2nd in the divison before all is said and done? I think the Jays will pass the Yanks unless Steinbrenner goes into panic mode and the Yanks add an Ace or a very good 3B/DH...

It's never bad to be winning, but I'm wondering if the Jays being in semi-contention near the trade deadline might make it hard for J.P. to move a Stewart, Escobar, or a Lidle. And I'm wondering if this is a good or a bad thing. I guess it wouldn't hurt the Jays to hold on to them and let them go via free-agencey at the end of the season, although they still need pitching prospects and Stewart and Lidle might definelty fetch you a good propsect or two. If they don't trade Lidle for pitching prospects they should look into re-signing him in the off-season. Arnold is coming up soon but I'm not sure who else is.

And if the Yanks fall too far out you KNOW they will do something. I imagine Conteras will be in the 'ro within a week or two, and I'm sure they are going to look to add another bullpen arm and another bat. Maybe they'll try to move Weaver for a goo bullpen arm. Urbina maybe? I don't think they have the propsects to land a Beltran or a Giles, in fact I'm not sure if they have the prospects to land any signifigant bat. Maybe cash would be enough of an incentive for a financially challenged team or maybe the Yanks would be willing to take on Carl Everret if the Rangers are shopping him. Maybe they could also pull something off with the Marlins for one of their bats.

Speaking of Urbina, is the only reason that Boston isn't intrested in potentially trading for him because they let him go via FA in the off-season? If so, maybe they should swallow their pride and try to grab him. I'd rather have him than Armando Benitez.

Boston's going to need help in the rotation before they can worry about the bullpen. (Will Chuck Finley ever sign with anyone?)

I still think Boston was wise in not signing Urbina. I don't think pride has much to do with not making a deal for him now. A healthy Chad Fox isn't much of a downgrade, and as we're seeing first hand with the Jays this year, that extra money saved can be spent elsewhere to address other needs.

John Smoltz, Octavio Dotel, Keith Foulke, Eric Gagne (mercy me!)... those are the guys you pay top dollar for.

I'm on record as saying the Jays should really try to keep Lidle next year. I'd hate to see the club get a rep as the Texas Rangers of the north.

I think maybe Finley wants to be close to his kids in Cali, so maybe the Angels will sign him. They could sure use him.

Many of last years pitching participants in the three way trade between the HOT HOT Yankees, A's and Tigers are throwing some innings this weekend. Lilly's lost, German got his first save of '03, Weaver goes tomorrow, Bonderman's breathing somewhere and then there's Jason Arnold...

...well how about a quick little update. Pitching game two of another double-header, Arnold's been lifted to begin the sixth, with the Skychiefs leading 2-0 over Norfolk. The final totals are 5 innings pitched, 4 hits allowed (2 well hit gap doubles), 6 strikeouts, 2 walks, no hit batters, no wild pitches, and the no runs allowed. He had runners on in every inning except the first, but was always groovin' and escaped the minor jams. Threw all his pitches for strikes, and his fastball was at 89/90 mph throughout the night. Sounded like a good game to watch.

So the score was 2-0, Reichert relieved Arnold and allowed a run in the sixth. 2-1 Skychiefs. Kershner, came on to get the final out of the sixth and remained in for the save in the seventh but, he just gave up a single and Arnold's second win at Triple-A is gonzo. His record stands at 1 Win 0 Losses.

Score is 2-2 going into the 8th, which is actually extra innings because of the double-headers being seven innings games.

Sour grapes from David Wells?:

"Every pitch I threw, they were on top of it," Wells said of the Blue Jays' hitters. "Like they knew what was coming."

It couldn't be that they are one of the best hitting teams in the AL could it?

It's too bad Torre didn't use Williams injury as an opportunity to move Jeter to lead-off and Soriano to the 3,4, or 5 hole.

"(Will Chuck Finley ever sign with anyone?)"

If any team (besides the Cards) signs Finley before the draft they have to give up a 1st round pick. He's likely to sign after the draft next week.
