The young fellows over at Sports Blotter have a good discussion of the AL Cy Young race today, but more importantly if you scroll down to "Quick Hits" for August 10, Sean has a report on yesterday's New Haven game versus the New Britain Rock Cats.

Apparently at least one scout really likes Dave Gassner, and both Rios and Quiroz are doing "excellent jobs looking at pitches and prolonging at bats". Now THAT is what I like to hear.

Incidentally, one transaction that escaped my notice is that New Haven have brought in former Jay Anthony Sanders. Welcome back to the organization!

Rios had a great box score line 2-4-2-2.

Rios had an excellent game. If I remember correctly, his 2 hits were a homerun and triple. Had the Rock Cats pitched him better, he very easily could have hit for the cycle. He had one caught stealing that was really the only blemish on his game. He did get hit by a pitch and nearly charge the mound...

Part of it is his height, but in the handful of games I've seen Rios played this year he's stood out more than anyone else.

I haven't seen it in these parts yet, but Cash was recalled and Service was released.

I sounded a note of concern about Rios in my last Farm Report; he's rewarded my worries by hitting .447 over his last 10 games. Clearly I need to cast aspersions more often.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Dave's my man.

Anthony Sanders, IIRC, received a terrible blow during his first sojourn with the Jays: his wife was killed in a freak skiing accident in 1997. I don't know how you manage to do anything after that, let alone continue a pro baseball career; I've always had a soft spot for him. Anthony has power to burn, but his lifetime minor-league BB/K rate is 303/839, so he's most likely at New Haven only to fill an outfield slot.

After 44 AA at-bats, Tyrell Godwin is at .357/.372/.500. A 1/8 BB/K rate, though.
