Nobody really expected Corey Thurman to throw six shutout innings in his first start of the year. Few anticipated that in his next outing, he would give up three homers to the first seven batters and fail to get out of the first inning. The safest prediction tonight is that he'll be in the middle of those extremes. I believe Corey has to pitch "backwards" to be effective. Forget about get-ahead fastballs, like the ones Teixeira and Nix put into orbit. Start guys off with the changeup, mix in the slider, then when they're leaning forward, looking for more off-speed stuff, sneak the heater by them, or get them to foul it off. He can go back to his best weapon -- that devastating change -- for an out pitch.

Ryan Franklin makes his first start ever against the Jays, but he's been horrible in five relief appearances, with a 13.06 ERA in 10.1 IP. He's coming off a shellacking by the Yankees, though only three of the eight runs he allowed were earned. I like the Toronto lineup, except for the absence of Josh Phelps. Greg Myers is the DH, with Kevin Cash, who knows Thurman well, behind the plate. Cash was overanxious the other night; he needs to relax and take a pitch once in a while. Reed Johnson leads off in RF, Cat's hitting seventh in left, which means Bobby Kielty, slumping from the left side, is available as a pinch-hitter. SS Mike Bordick, in the 6-hole, tries to extend his hit streak to 20 games.

Cat was lucky he wasn't called out on strikes there. Franklin might give up some runs if the strike zone is really that small tonight.

Yeah, I half thought the ump was gonna do the "late strike 3 call when the batter leaves the box too early after the close full count pitch" thing.

Thurman's stuff is looking kind of straight to me. I'll be surprised if he lasts 5 innings.

Has there been any suggestion of Kielty batting R only like the way Hudson has been hitting L only? He has only 88 at bats R, but his R/L OPS split is 1.051/.653 right now (Hudson's is .465 (OUCH!)/.796).

Mike Cameron is my choice for best defensive center fielder in major league baseball.

Your choice and the Win Shares choice, apparently (AL (although Beltran has a higher rate) and NL). The second inning catch off Bordick was fine.

Oooh this is painful! Thurman is looking like a drunk in a bar trying to hit triple-20 on a dart board.

Wells did well to nab Ichiro's serve into shallow center field.

Where's that darn rally cap... I know I had it around here somewhere...

I think it's really great to see these smart hits and runs produced by the "bottom half".

Now if only the meat of the order can keep it rolling...

Woah -- Sparky bolsters his worth yet again! What started as a three-run rally suddenly turned into a six-run big inning when The Sparkplug spanked one over the wall. They've managed to chase Franklin...

Who is this sudden pitcher in the Sturtze outfit?

Plus, you have to appreciate the erudite Cerutti:

"That's not easy to do, and he just did it!"

Methinks Mr. Cerutti studies at the Harry Neale School of Broadcasting...

sturtze sure knows how to manufacture drama.

step 1: walk bases loaded
step 2: strike out the side
_Shrike - Thursday, August 14 2003 @ 12:01 AM EDT (#80941) #
All true. Cerutti is outdoing himself tonight in sheer incompetence. Twice he's flubbed trying to tell his audience that Ben Davis was acquired from the Padres!

Pat Gillick was well-spoken on the broadcast for a half-inning, though. I was impressed that Faulds had wits enough to ask if the Mariners had any plans to recruit any Japanese players (hinting at Kazuo Matsui, no doubt). Uncharacteristic of Faulds; I wonder who fed him that query? Gillick dodged it, of course.

The shots of JP looking frustrated in his front row, third base line seat were quite amusing. -)

Now why on earth did they take Sturtze out already? If he kept throwing like he did to the last three batters he could've gone another 2, easy.

Now they bring in Kerchner and the M's take the lead.

F-ing Tosca.

Anyone else shocked at how short Cash is? Based on his power numbers from the minors, I was expecting him to be big like Wells or Delgado.

BTW, he doesn't look all that overmatched out there. In his third AB, he worked Mateo to a 3-2 count, fouling off tons of pitches, before finally striking out.

I hate our bullpen.

Wasn't it a few years ago when Charles Kegley was one of the prospects to watch? How he's dropped off the face of the earth. I've just been noticing that he was demoted to Dunedin and is doing BP time. Must be having a hard time coming back from an injury or something.

Sorry for the hijack. Talking about the Jays right now isn't very appealing to me.

Even without the benefit of 20-20 hindsight, I agree. You've got a guy who can log a bunch of innings for you, who just finished striking out the last three batters he faced.

Sure, he could've gotten lit up just as easily as Kershner did, but what was the mad panic to get him out of the game? It wasn't exactly the ninth inning.

There's got be a happy medium between Cito Gaston's coma-like "let 'em play" attitude and Carlos Tosca's school of micro-managing.

My impression, gleaned from one hour (two innings) of the broadcast last night, was that Thurman was either unable, or maybe more likely unwilling, to throw anything near the strike zone. I suppose that's what happens when you get hammered for 3 homers in one inning your last time out. It's easy to say from the living room seats, but he really does have to trust his stuff and throw that fastball more often. The best changeup in the world doesn't do you much good if hitters aren't worried about your fastball. Nibbling, getting behind hitters, going 3-2 constantly -- not only is it bad pitching, it's simply gruesome television. Things wenty from bad to worse later, so I'm glad I didn't stay up for the denouement. Hopefully Corey learned a little more this time out that he can put to use his next start.
_R Billie - Thursday, August 14 2003 @ 11:56 AM EDT (#80947) #
Corey has exactly the same problem he had last year. Afraid to challenge hitters consistently with strikes. He can get away with that in the minors but not against the Mariners. He wasn't hurt nearly as often as he should have been by his nibbling last year but things are catching up to him this time around.

In other news...what aliens suddenly possessed Tanyon Sturtze and gifted him with impeccable control last night after walking the bases loaded? More importantly, why didn't Tosca keep him out there to see if his new found control was a fluke instead of sending out a lefty with average stuff against an order that does better against lefthanded pitching?

When asked whether Sturtze should be left in, the Magic 8 ball indicated "Outlook Not So Good".

You're not suggesting that the Magic 8 ball has any other possible answers when asked about relief pitchers, are you?

My sources say no.
Outlook not so good.
Very doubtful.
My reply is no.
Don't count on it.
My sources say no.
Definitely not.
I have my doubts.
Who knows?
Are you kidding?
Don't bet on it.
Forget about it.

Does anyone know what ever happened to Charles Kegley?
_John Neary - Saturday, January 17 2004 @ 10:53 AM EST (#80953) #
As far as I know, he started the season with New Haven and had some control problems (14 IP, 20 BB, 7 K), so he was sent down to Dunedin, where he pitched pretty well (25.1 IP, 12 BB, 23 K). He had never posted a K:BB ratio better than 1:1 before, so those numbers are a big step forward.

The official site doesn't keep track of minor league DL stints very well, so I don't know if he got hurt later in the year. I think he's still in the organization.
Mike Green - Saturday, January 17 2004 @ 09:09 PM EST (#80954) #
John N and Cash, I don't remember if Charles Kegley was injured at some time later in the year, but I do know that he pitched in the playoffs for Dunedin. The "minor league updates" thread on the offical site fan forum refers to that.
