A little CanCon over at Baseball America today. First of all, the newest off-season Prospect Hot Sheet positions Syracuse and Team USA outfielder Gabe Gross at #6, with this commentary:

In case you missed him, Gabe Gross is back; he ripped 39 doubles and drew 83 walks between Double-A New Haven and Triple-A Syracuse this season, then added a .343 average and .686 slugging during Team USA play in the AFL.

The PHS isn't so much a ranking of actual prospect status as it is a "Who's Hot, Who's Not" list of minor leaguers. That list would not include Russ Adams right now, who struggled with a .179/.289/.256 line for the Javelinas of the AFL. Mind you, this is in 39 at-bats, which is as useful a sample size as the Sheila Copps Leadership Committee.

Also at BA, the Montreal (for now) Expos' top ten prospects receive the Post-Season Wrap-Up treatment. We're going to be adding more Expos content in the near future, so this is a nice introduction to their system.

Out of the six names who "just missed the cut", three are Jays prospects... Guillermo Quiroz, Mike Rouse, and serious up-and-comer Jorge Sequea.

Jordan,

I can't access current year Dominican League stats off BA's website. Am I missing something? Quiroz and Sequea are, one guesses from the PHS, doing well.

Craig B,

Mike Rouse is an A's prospect now. It is not at all clear whether he or Adams has a better future.

I knew something was wrong! Thanks Mike.

Anyway, the Dominican Winter League hasn't started yet, as far as I can tell. According to the website of the Águilas Cibaeñas (Cibao Eagles) they are getting underway on Hallowe'en. The Aguilas open against their local rivals, the Gigantes del Cibao (Cibao Giants).

If I'd taken five more minutes I would have seen it for sure.

The DWL will indeed start on October 31.

Mike Rouse is an A's prospect now.

Unusual mistake for BA to list him as a Jays farmhand. Rouse, along with pitcher Chris Mowday, seemed like a reasonable price to pay for Cory Lidle.

Quiroz is with the Zulia Aguilas in the Venezuelan League, which BA doesn't even have on its main winter leagues stats page yet. GQ was 1-for-27 with 15 strikeouts down there last winter, which makes his subsequent development in AA even more stunning.

Sequea is with the Oriente Caribes in the same loop, which has been under way now for almost two weeks and continues through the end of December, political turmoil permitting.

Mike, the Venezuelan Winter League is underway, but I can't find any records or stats at BA either. So here's a chance to brush up on your Spanish: a link to the VBL's Website (and to a Googled translation). Guillermo Quiroz is playing with the Aguilas and doing quite well, hitting .346 with 2 HRs. But keep in mind that the VSL isn't much of a predictor of future success: last winter, just before his breakout campaign at New Haven, Quiroz hit exactly .037 in 27 AB with 1 HR, walking twice and striking out 15 times.

Jorge Sequea, for his part, is off to an amazing start with the Caribes de Oriente, hitting .524 in 22 AB so far. Again, small sample size. But generally, he really seems to have pulled past Jimmy Alvarez and now might have a reasonable shot at a roster spot in Toronto next year.

I'm just a slow cowhand.

Thanks, Jordan, I enjoyed working on the Spanish version.

I agree about Sequea.

Corey Thurman is also in Venezuela, with Magellanes. So far, in 9 IP, he's allowed 4 earned runs on 7 hits (including a homer), walked 4 and struck out 12.

Lefty Gustavo Chacin, who was in the New Haven bullpen this year, is starting for Cardinales, and while he's been hittable (18 hits and 2 HR in 15 IP) his ERA is 1.80 and he's fanned 17 without walking a batter.

While Gross made the final cut for the 24-man Team USA squad, he's slated as a backup to Sizemore (understandable), Reed (understandable), and Mike Holliday (???) in the outfield.

BTW, can someone remind me how to post a link properly in da Box. The last time I did so was way back in April I think!

Steve, like so:

[a href="URL GOES HERE"]TEXT GOES HERE[/a]

Where each "[" is replaced by a "<" and each "]" with a ">" (the system won't display the formula with the proper characters inserted)

Thanks Jordan!

Team USA is loaded with lefthanded bats, and they really wanted some righties in the lineup. That's why the last minute addition Holliday is scheduled to start over the lefty Gross.
