Batter's Box Interactive Magazine Batter's Box Interactive Magazine Batter's Box Interactive Magazine
Eagle-eyed readers will notice a couple of new additions to the Box Navigation area on the left. Thanks to the efforts of Gerry McDonald, we've added an organizational Depth Chart, with links to various player pages. It's not 100% accurate, of course, but it's a start. After spring training, it will be modified to reflect who is actually on the rosters, and we'll keep it updated when there are promotions and demotions throughout the season. Obviously, there are no listings yet for Auburn and Pulaski, which will feature mostly players selected in the June draft.

We're also pleased to present a new Frequently Asked Questions page, courtesy of Craig B., the inimitable Answer Man for Da Box. The Analysis link is now called Analysis/Stats, and includes a handy link to Jonny German's recent "Where's Where" of Internet baseball stats. Finally, we invite anyone who wants to get to know the Batter's Box contributors a little better to check out our all-new Roster page, where we share our favourite players, most unshakeable baseball beliefs and other information. We're going to try to get future interview subjects to answer similar questions, and welcome everyone to do the same in this thread.

I would hope that McGowan is in AAA and DJ Hanson starts at AA as he will be old for that league and after being put on the 40 man roster the Jays will need him to move up. Is Rosario going to start on the DL? I have read he had a great instructional fall camp and they were going to start him at Dunedin and as it warms up move him to Manchester.

I think RP Jason Durocher will be in there somewhere too. AAA probably.

Just pored through all the new stuff, great job guys. One thing I've noticed: there really should be dates beside the articles in Analysis/Stats - I can't tell you how many times I've clicked on that Josh Phelps one thinking it was new...

Just checked out the roster; I'm a little scared of the number of times 'litigator' and 'attorney' appear ...

WRT the placements of the players in the depth chart, keep in mind that at this point, this is all speculation (informed, intelligent speculation, granted) by Gerry, based on his assessment of both the players' development and the organizaton's needs. McGowan, for instance, could reasonably begin the year in Manchester or in Syracuse; spring training performances, as well as the coaching staff's evaluations, will decide his eventual starting spot. The chart is inherently fungible in February; by April and afterwards, it will be an invaluable resource for keeping track of who's where, especially since the Jays figure to be active promoters and demoters again this season.

Just FYI but Sparky's and Gross' links have been crossed on the new depth chart feature. Damn ESPN cant even give Reed a picture... he's my favourite Jay and he gets no respect, no respect at all.

Arod to the Yankees, you've got to be kidding me.
How the heck are we expected to compete in this division.

Sparky's and Gross' links have been crossed

Thanks, Jobu, it's fixed now. I hope that mistake doesn't prove prophetic, as I'm a huge Johnson fan too.

I've also added Durocher to the crowded Syracuse 'pen, flipped DJ Hanson with Vince Perkins, moved Justin Miller to the Dunedin DL, which is where he might start the season, and "promoted" Rosario to the rotation there, which now has six pretty good starters. Again, until they break camp and start playing ball, there's going to be plenty of guesswork involved.

In his spring training preview at MLB.com, Spencer Fordin mentions Juan Campos, another minor-league free agent with a K/BB ratio of better than 4:1, another oversight. The 24-year-old Venezuelan righty now appears in the Manchester bullpen.

I know you can never have too much pitching, but it does appear you can have too few roster spots to stockpile it all. I'm sure there will be an injury or two along the way, and some starters moved to relief, or vice versa, but the list looks very promising.

I'm a little scared of the number of times 'litigator' and 'attorney' appear

You're scared? Both my partners are lawyers, and all I know for sure about our agreement is that there is no cabal.

Where's the ARod to the Yanks thread? What does everyone think about that one?

hijack...

Florida television has SI writer, Tom Verducci reporting A-Rod traded to Yankees for Soriano and PTBNL.
_albatross - Saturday, February 14 2004 @ 11:04 PM EST (#75757) #
I assume A-Rod would shift to third, should this scenario materialize. Amazing that he's willing to do that, considering that he's probably the greatest to ever play the position. The reports are that Soriano and our old favourite the PTBNL would go to Texas, with the Rangers picking up a considerable portion (about $60 million) of A-Rod's contract. The Empire does it again, although they now have a new hole at 2nd.

Just read the FAQ and Craig, you should feel cheated if the title Commic Extraordinaire isn't added to your resume. Good laughs. Thnkas.

BTW, Rodent and Albatross, we've got a Hijack Thread where the whole A-Rod bit's being discussed. But feel free to talk amongst yourselves here ;-)

Excuse the extreme cluelessness, but where? What hijack thread?
_albatross - Sunday, February 15 2004 @ 12:36 AM EST (#75760) #
The latest thread I can find on the home page is this one entitled "deeper depth." Where's the A-Rod thread? Am I simply not sophisticated enough to know where the hidden link is? Is it some inner circle bauxite secret that I'm simply not privy to? Gaaaa!! Where is it? Where? Where? This is my life? Looking for the freekin A-Rod thread on a Saturday night?

Not that I know it all. Albatross.

Two guys who probably will be in the Skychiefs bullpen will be mark Lukechevitz (spelling?) and Scott Cassidy. They want both to bring along the young pitching staff, and add some veteran experience to the staff.

Does this depth chart assume Pete Walker will be lost on waivers?
_Ryan01 - Tuesday, February 24 2004 @ 03:11 PM EST (#75767) #
Geoff, Walker has already cleared waivers and been assigned to Syracuse. (Back when we signed Gomez and Adams, Walker was designated for assignment and Tom Wilson was lost on waivers) So he will be around somewhere.

I wouldn't worry too much about little details yet, I'm sure Gerry will update everything once the season starts and the actual rosters are set.
_Ken Smith - Sunday, March 21 2004 @ 06:21 PM EST (#75768) #
Here's one; little league coach wants to state that for
little leaguers, were talking 1-3 graders, it getting around
and getting around early on the ball are equal issues.

A point to be made is that a player who can get around
early is better prepared for speed and its far better to
learn to wait that to have to catch up.... Help me out
pro's, give me some nice opinions tidbits to pass on to the
little leaguers.

ksmith@gbis.com

Thanks, I will always remember you.....
