Odds and ends from around the Canadian baseball world:

The Expos lost 3-2 to the Brewers in Puerto Rico yesterday -- appropriately enough, on the same day that former Brewers owner (sic) Bud Selig announced that he’s about a month away from deciding where the Expos will relocate. Personally, I have about as much confidence in an imminent resolution to the Expos’ situation as I have in Rand al’Thor’s chances of actually fighting the Last Battle at any point during my lifetime.

If JP Ricciardi is in deep gloom over the Blue Jays’ plight, it’s hard to tell. “I think we’re going to start having the Salem witch investigations, see if someone burnt a chicken somewhere,” he said. Shades of Jobu. Everyone knows the team is maddeningly inconsistent and offensively challenged -- JP makes the point that even the Jays’ home runs have just slipped over the wall, rather than being driven into the seats -- but I don’t see any signs of panic in the front office. Good.

With an off-day, the local media is turning its attention to what is without question the best story on the Blue Jays this season: the emergence of Orlando Hudson, solid hitter, extraordinary gloveman, enthusiastic youngster, and consummate team player who could conceivably snag an All-Star reserve position this season. Prevailing wisdom has long had it that Hudson would be dealt for pitching once Russ Adams or Aaron Hill were ready for The Show. Now? Ask JP. "Is Orlando a keeper? ... You bet. I keep hearing how we're going to trade him, but nothing could be farther from the truth.”

The other bright spot from May is the resurgence of leadoff hitter Reed Johnson. Platooned for a while with Howie Clark, Sparky has shaken off a slow start and a lot of skeptics (myself included) who don’t think he’s a 500-AB-per-year player, and he’s been one of the Jays’ best hitters lately. Spencer Fordin talks about Sparky’s mechanics and has the latest on Pat Hentgen skipping a turn in the rotation. Aaron is preparing a banner that reads “Hentgen for Closer.” What do you think?

Also, bad news for the Rangers last night -- catcher Gerald Laird tore thumb ligaments in a home-plate collision with Ken Harvey and is gone for three months -- is good news for ex-Jay Ken Huckaby, who's been recalled from the minors. COMN. The Rangers have been a terrific story so far this season, but this latest injury could derail their train.

Don't Stop Believin', Jays fans. We're only a quarter way through this Journey.

Speaking of catchers,

With the signing of Bobby Estelella, has Zaun earned the role as backup catcher? I guess no decisions have been made but when Crash comes back, why not use him as a bat, maybe a little first base? I'm trying to work through the permutations here, but every combo I can come up with has Berg shipped out!

I keep hearing how we're going to trade him, but nothing could be farther from the truth.

That's the best news I've heard all month!

Four Seamer wins -- and apparently has the same CD collection that I do. :-)

My fault. He's on my fantasy team, which obvious induces season-ending injuries. Sorry, Gerald.

LOL, that was gold.

Last night on Sportsnet Marty York was claiming that JP was fed up with Delgado and Hinkse and trying desperately to trade them.
Anyone think there's any truth to that rumour? I'm not sure if I can trust Marty York on anything Bluejays related. Although Richard Griffin may have overtaken his title of "Toronto Sportswriter that has an unholy hatred of the BlueJays".

Now if you'd used Smell of Wine and Cheap Perfume as the lyrics I would have got it. Isn't that what Terry Adams locker smells like?
_Four Seamer - Friday, May 21 2004 @ 09:55 AM EDT (#64403) #
Actually, I loathe that song! But for some reason, my wife and her friends adopted that song as an anthem at university. So, I get to hear it every time they meet over adult beverages, loudly and repeatedly.

I curse you, Steve Perry.
_Jordan - Friday, May 21 2004 @ 10:07 AM EDT (#64404) #
It could've been worse, I suppose ... your wife's friends could've adopted Stone in Love, or even Open Arms. Yeesh. But actually, cheesy as it is, I'm very fond of Don't Stop Believin'. A good anthem for these Jays, at least:

Some will win, some will lose
Some are born to sing the blues

Journey's one of those Bands That Time Forgot --- you don't even see them touring high school auditoriums anymore. Though they're probably huge in that alternate dimension where REO Speedwagon, Asia and Styx are the world's top concert acts. Hey, have you seen who Styx's new lead singer is? The Apocalypse is upon us....
_alsiem - Friday, May 21 2004 @ 10:12 AM EDT (#64405) #
This is a few years back but Journey used to play Stages in Kingston regularly. I read an interesting article on bands that play casinos. Did you know that Hall and Oates are still pulling in a half million annually? How's that for an alternative universe?
robertdudek - Friday, May 21 2004 @ 10:38 AM EDT (#64406) #
It's generally not a good idea to trade guys that are struggling. We know Delgado's going to hit much better than this, and Hinske hit better last year when he had an injured hand, so we know he's very likely to do better too.

If you're going to start a rumour, try to assume that the General Manager knows what he's doing.

My fault. He's on my fantasy team

Halfway through the season I changed my fantasy hockey team's name to The Season Ending Injuries. On my team: Dominik Hasek, Brian Rafalski, Al McInnis, Barrett Jackman, Paul Kariya and too many others who I cannot remember because pain is overwhelming me. Somehow I finished eighth with the leftovers and some hot overlooked rookies.

Mike, you're back just in time to hear American Idol William Hung sing 'Take Me Out To The Ballgame' during the 7th inning stretch of their game on the 30th vs. the Rangers. Discuss.
Named For Hank - Friday, May 21 2004 @ 12:45 PM EDT (#64414) #
Wasn't Reed using Hung's cover of She Bangs for his striding-to-the-plate music for a couple of days? I swear he was.

Welcome back. Go Flames! (I'm on the bandwagon)

You and a lot of people, it seems. :)

My girlfriend and I were in one of the big bars on 17th Ave in Calgary when the Flames won Game 6. I totally believe the estimates that there were ten to twenty thousand people on 17th ave partying at the end of the game. The place was absolutely wild, and with all the women flashing the crowd, it felt like Mardi Gras. It was a pretty big change from being the only guy in the city with a Flames flag on his car, which was the case for me a month ago.

RE: Drum Chaos. Where are the details?
Named For Hank - Friday, May 21 2004 @ 01:37 PM EDT (#64418) #
All over the place. Short version: the drum can be heard on TV and the radio, and has been noticed. And it shook the hell out of Johan Santana the other night.

Also, we made little Theodore Roosevelt heads to hang up instead of Ks for Ted Lilly. The radio guys seemed pretty tickled by them, and freaked out Jobu by describing his actions as he was hanging a new one (he was listening to the radio at the time).
Craig B - Friday, May 21 2004 @ 01:45 PM EDT (#64419) #
Back on Pat...

Over the last three seasons, Pat Hentgen has a 2.86 ERA as a reliever.

Discuss. :)

(NFH, put up the sign again...)

The only discussion left to be had is what music we're going to bring him in to...and whether we can have a throne install in the bullpen. Just think, Cy Young gets the win and Cy Old gets the save...

Hopefully next time NFH and Jobu break out the Teddy K's, the game will actually be on RSN or TSN. IIRC, this one was on PPV only (which means the ESPN broadcast probably said something about it).
Named For Hank - Friday, May 21 2004 @ 03:43 PM EDT (#64429) #
Thanks, guys. Snake, I own a small custom photographic lab, so making big, beautiful prints is well within my scope of practice. ;)

My guess is:

If/when Myers gets healthy, Zaun gets dealt or waived so he can stay in the majors. Estelella becomes the new Zaun, and gets the call if Cash/Myers get hurt.

_alsiem - Friday, May 21 2004 @ 04:03 PM EDT (#64434) #
In one of Fordin's recent articles, (I'm too lazy to track it down), Hentgen is quoted calling himself the 5th starter. Is this a mistake or is Pat himself ready to go to pen?
_Fawaz K - Friday, May 21 2004 @ 04:17 PM EDT (#64435) #
Will be there on Monday. Have you guys settled on a name for 518 yet? I was thinking about something along the lines of 'Dirtbags...(insert word for 'section' or 'club' that doesn't sound stupid)...

I saw the bit where Hentgen calls himself the 5th starter too; I think that is an indication that he is up for anything that's for the good of the team.

COMN for some good cheer. Clay Davenport's 3rd order wins and losses show the Blue Jays at 18.3-16.7, still in 4th place but basically tied with the Yankees and Baltimore.

What the stat Clay produces is essentially saying is:

1. The Blue Jays have lost more games than they should have given their runs scored and allowed, and
2. The Blue Jays' schedule has been tough; the Red Sox are the best team in baseball right now, and the Jays have seen a lot of them.

I'm not saying Hentgen CAN close - honestly I don't know but I see why he couldn't do about what Rod Beck can do - but I know it would be so purely poetical if it were to happen succesfully that we simply MUST try it at some point. If it worked he could finish his career for us in that role...it'd be cool.

As I said - no idea if it would work though...
_Jobu - Saturday, May 22 2004 @ 02:15 AM EDT (#64443) #
Wow, I just found out about this thread now after Snake pointed it out for me. I must say I like what a hear again, faith in The Hentgen Force is strong in all of you, the revolution continues.

Craig B: Hearing that music you chose, picturing the words GAME OVER on the jumbotron as The Hentgen jogs to the mound, Poster waiving in 518, music blasting... the only thing I can say is... GENIUS.

And now it seems like The Hentgen is in an "all for the good of the team mode" what better time to try him out than RIGHT NOW IN BOSTON? He's got nothing to do for a while since they pulled his start, the relievers are tired after the first game, PUT THE SON OF CY TO USE DAMNIT!! GIVE HIM A SHOT!!!!!

NFH: Cant you just email your immortal poster to some bigwigs in-box and let the image do the rest?

Boston blow outs can be averted when you place your faith in the man behind the handlebars.
