No thank you or please no regard for the time

Today's the day for the draft! I won't be linking any of the draft-related stories, because Pistol has already beaten me to it. We've got a thread "Blue Jays 2004 Draft" that we'll be updating when each pick is made. I believe our 2003 Draft thread holds the record for most posts in a thread, but I have a feeling we'll be shattering that record today.
  1. The Jays weren't able to split their Oakland series, as they fell to the A's 8-3 yesterday. The good news is that Woodward, Catalanotto and Speier could all be back for the Jays next game on Tuesday. To learn more, see Tony Kuttner's "Jays can't catch Oakland", Mark Thoma's (not a typo) "Four-run first pushes A's past Jays", Larry Millson's "Depleted Toronto loses again", Geoff Baker's "Plucky Jays fail to win the West", Richard Griffin's "Jays could use Kershner in the bullpen", and Mike Ganter's "Jays in too deep, and way too early".

  2. Fordin Notes (by Tony Kuttner). Another injury: Now Valerio De Los Santos is hurt. Lovely.

  3. Today's an off-day, so you can devote your discretionary sports time to the draft and to hockey games. Tomorrow's game features the 4-2 Ted Lilly for the 25-32 Blue Jays vs. the 3-5 Hideo Nomo for the 30-24 Dodgers. MLB.com has a game preview. All three games in the series against the Dodgers will be 7:05 PM EST starts at the Dome. Like many of us, Donovan Vincent is excited to see Eric Gagné come to the Dome.

I'm quite looking forward to today's draft. Unlike most of our Batter's Box roster, I know absolutely nothing about any of these guys, so I'm quite looking forward to reading their commentary. The only inside information I have about who the Jays are going to pick in the 1st round is this: They've never been in my kitchen.

Unfortunately, that is an incorrect question in Jeopardy!.

I can never get the 80s song of the day, but I'm all over Cheers.

So if Griffey a Machine? If so, it's his world.

This is interesting. The following paragraph appeared in Peter King's MMQB column this morning over at cnnsi.com. For those who might not be familiar with King, he's a great NFL writer and a huge Red Sox fan. He had this to say after attending the FisherCats vs Rock Cats game last Tuesday night:

"One more note: Does anyone who reads this column know J.P. Ricciardi, the Toronto Blue Jays GM personally? If so, please tell him that ace baseball scout Peter King says New Hampshire's starter last Tuesday, the itinerant Todd Ozias, should be on the fast track to Class AAA Syracuse. Great changeup. I bet he got five strikeouts with the change."

There's a bit more on how great the New Hampshire staff are and a nice little anecdote on the naming of the team. COMN, it's under the heading "Factoid of the Week That May Interest Only Me".

So if Griffey a Machine? If so, it's his world.

They tell him he doesn't care
But deep inside he's just a man.

Very nice. The song was Machines (or 'Back to Humans') by Queen.

You get forty million points, and a picture of the U.S.S. Cuttlefish:

Awesome, can I exchange these points for money anywhere? Got some fun medical bills coming up.

Got some fun medical bills coming up.

No politics in the thread, please. :)

Actually, I think the game against the Twins when LeCroy hit the grand slam off Adams is the thread with the most posts.

Who were the people on the question in the Cheers episode?

Archibald Leach, Bernard Schwartz and Lucille Le Sueur

(Cary Grant, Tony Curtis and Joan Crawford)

I actually remembered the first two, had to look up the third.

I assume that Grant's name is where the Archie Leach character in A Fish Called Wanda got his name... I also guess that if Jamie Lee Curtis had decided to go the Emilio Estevez route, she'd be known as Jamie Lee Schwartz.

Re: Peter King's article. I preface what I am about to say by noting that I like King's writing as it relates to football. His comment about Ozias is charming but naive. Any 28 year old pitcher that can't fool AA batters with a good change has no place even in AA. Ozias has pitched well and given the Fishercats the emergency starter innings that they were hoping for from a minor league veteran but that's about the end of the story I'm afraid.

What a perdicament tommorow. If Gagne comes in the jays lose but I get to see him play. If he doesnt come in the jays might win but I dont get to see him pitch. I dont know where my loyalty lies...

at least I get to look forward to Nomo's kooky windup without guilt.

Before I forget, what's the status of the Lily K's and the O-Drum for the big game tommorow?

Congrats to Bauxite Ryan Lind for getting a mention at the bottom of Jayson Stark's latest Useless Info column! COMN to read it.

David: I believe Donkit R.K. was mentioned as well, under his real name.
