Imagine for a moment that you're Carlos Delgado. You're back from -- what? Yes. Yes, that's right, you are young, handsome, powerful, wealthy and remarkably popular. Okay, stop it now, you're not paying attention. You're back from a lengthy stint on the disabled list, you're raring to go, and who's the guy on the mound facing you? Jamie Moyer, the most infuriating soft-tossing left-hander since Frank Tanana. But while you may think that would be annoying, Carlos is probably wearing his trademark smile right now. Because lifetime against Moyer, he's batting .447 (21-for-47) with six home runs, five doubles and 11 RBIs. It'll be very, very good to see the big slugger back in the lineup tonight.

Could we possibly see a completely refreshed 'Los for the remainder of the season? I assume his legs are healthy after the long absence. I am anxious to see his at-bats tonight.

I thought "Tanana" was one of the character strings designated as "banned swear word" on Da Box?

Welcome back, Carlos!

Moyer gave up solo homers to Wells and Menechino May 31, but otherwise shut down the Jays for 7.2 innings. That lineup had Phelps in the cleanup spot, Estalella in the 5-hole and Pond batting eighth, so tonight's looks a little more dangerous.

Batista has gone seven or more in 6 of his last 7 starts, and has shut out the opposition in three of his last five. Except for one bad night in San Francisco, he's been tremendous for six weeks. Against these guys, who are probably pressing, I like his chances.
_Ducey - Tuesday, July 06 2004 @ 06:51 PM EDT (#53453) #
We will know the Jays are due for a reversal of fortune if Carlos lines one into the dugout knocking Dave Berg onto the 60 day DL

Still no word on who will be sent down? I would like to see Peterson get some work at AAA and away from Tosca's bullpen "management".
Dave Till - Tuesday, July 06 2004 @ 06:57 PM EDT (#53454) #
Yay! Carlos is back!

For those people who don't realize that it was only the injuries to the club's best hitters that have kept them from being a good team this year, check these numbers out (apologies for formatting):

Team GP Runs allowed per game
Tor 82 4.70
Bos 80 4.75
NYY 80 4.89

Yes, the Toronto Blue Jays have allowed fewer runs per game than the Sox and Yanks - teams that spent about one squillion dollars on pitching.

The Jays have scored 63 fewer runs than the Sox, and 83 fewer than the Yanks. If Wells, Delgado, Cat, and Myers had been performing at their 2003 levels, the Jays might not have 83 more runs than they do now, but they'd certainly have a bunch more.

Let's hope that Delgado can feast on Moyer's slow stuff tonight.

The King has returned.

Not sure I like dropping Hinske to the 6-hole given the tear he's on, but I guess it makes sense against the lefty Moyer and maintains the string of batters of opposite handedness in the lineup. Meh. No time to complain - let's go, Carlos!
_Ryan Lind - Tuesday, July 06 2004 @ 07:01 PM EDT (#53456) #
Yup, Peterson went down to AAA according to www.rotoworld.com.

Carlos is back, Hinske is hitting well, Phelps looked good the last time he's played. Things are looking up.

Too bad this game's on TSN.

4th outfielder...pfffft.

I am guessing you keep saying this to provoke a reaction. Well, here's the reaction you're looking for.

Reed Johnson kills LHP. He will always deserve to start against LHP. It's his ability against RHP that makes him a questionable fulltime player.
Coach - Tuesday, July 06 2004 @ 07:24 PM EDT (#53462) #
Sparky, you da man. Romanuk's home run call was hilarious. Why can't the TV networks hire a play-by-play guy who knows something about baseball?

Carlos bloops a "double" misplayed by Winn, and scores on the Zaun single. 3-1 Jays.

The Jays are certainly enjoying the feast of 83 mph fastballs. The Mariners should move Moyer now, while he still has some trade value (despite Bavasi's assertions that Moyer won't be traded). His ratio of 1 HR per 5 IP is not a good sign, particularly when he gets to pitch half his games in a tremendous pitcher's park.

_Chuck Van Den C - Tuesday, July 06 2004 @ 07:42 PM EDT (#53476) #
Romanuk and Tabler just aren't doing it for me.

Signs you are a fill-in...

"... and Batista throws the ball to the second baseman... Hudson blah blah..."

It wasn't obvious to Romanuk who the second baseman was. He had to recover from the generic use of second baseman and prove to us that he knew it was Hudson, thus his superfluous follow-up sentence which included Hudson's name.

When I hear Romanuk's generic play calling, it sounds like women's Olympic baseball coverage where no one knows anyone's name.
_Ryan Lind - Tuesday, July 06 2004 @ 07:43 PM EDT (#53477) #
Moyer hasn't seemed to have particularly good command of those 80 mph fastballs either. I agree, the M's should move him while they can get something back.

This is weird though, a homerun derby between the Jays and Mariners?

Maybe the extra work with Barnett is paying off (cross fingers).

Maybe. We all want to be optimistic, but it should be noted that Phelps entered tonight's game with an 821 OPS vs LHP and is now slugging 500 against them.

It's the RHP that have been giving him fits: 188/260/266. Of course, these numbers may never budge an inch given his new role as a platoon player.

Oddly, prior to 2004 he'd actually done better against RHP than LHP.

I disagree. 279/348/383 is chopped liver for a corner outfielder. The team just doesn't have any better options at the moment.

I dont want to get into the whole debate again because it's been done to death so Ill keep it short. His SLG is low, but there's nothing wrong with that BA or OBP, they're in the top half of all MLB corner outfielders anyway. Oh yeah and his defensive stats (F%, RF, ZR) are far above average (12th, 9th, 8th according to ESPN) for a MLB corner outfielder too.

Yes, the Toronto Blue Jays have allowed fewer runs per game than the Sox and Yanks - teams that spent about one squillion dollars on pitching.

It's not Romanuk's fault that he was pressed into duty to do something he's probably not all that experienced in doing. I mean, if they asked me, I'd do it in a heartbeat, and Romanuk's about a 1000 times better at it than I'd be.

That's what bugs me about all the slights about Dave Berg. It's not *his* fault that his name is being written into the lineup every day.

You know, I don't really know what happened to TSN. I was out of the country from 2000 to late 2002. just listening to whoever is doing the internet broadcast, and he just said that John Olerud went directly into the majors as a september callup. He said that Olerud never played a game in the minors. Can anyone verify this, because if it's true then that's pretty amazing. I'd venture to say that not too many people would have that, or maybe I'm wrong and it happened a lot in the past. I'm still pretty young so I don't know a whole lot of stuff about baseball before the late 80's.

Magpie, it certainly is possible that Vinny Chulk is as good as he looks. He was very effective as a starter for double A Tennessee in 2002, and wasn't half bad for Syracuse in 2003. He looked pretty good to me in his cup of coffee with the Jays at the end of last year. For him to develop into a fine reliever would not be a shock.

To go off-topic here I think it's amazing what Bonds has done with the Giants. It's a one batter team and they're in contention for the division title.

Just looked at his OBP and it's .619

Just imagine if Bonds was a FA after this season and he got signed by the Yanks to be the meat in the buns for A-Rod and Giambi!

It's true Phillip. And it's extremely rare and there was a lot of controversey over it. I remember the broadcasters kept saying, more eloquently but essentially, that Olerud had no balls because it's in the minor leagues where you earn your balls.

It was part of the agreement in drafting him that he could go straight to the bigs. There was a lot of resentment.
_Kenneth - Tuesday, July 06 2004 @ 09:44 PM EDT (#53536) #
Olerud NEVER played a game in the minors, joined the Jays in September of '89 and never looked back.

Johan Santana is a machine.

That's like 5 straight starts where he's struck out at least 10 batters.

I'm saying NO ONE is as good as Vinnie looks right now. He's given up three runs all year, all on Hatteburg's 2b off Kerry Lite-em-up. One - count 'em - one run has scored while Vinnie's been on the mound (1 of 8 inherited)

Magpie, if that's what you mean, you're right. He's been lucky as well as good. Still 22 innings pitched, 15 hits, 10 walks, 17 strikeouts and 0 home runs allowed is fine relief pitching and is reasonably consistent with what he achieved in the minors.

Also straight from college to the Majors: Jim Abbott.

Hey! A cheap save! Which are much rarer than cheap wins, although people do seem more upset by them...
_Keith Talent - Tuesday, July 06 2004 @ 09:59 PM EDT (#53553) #
Yeah, if there has to be a late-inning prestige stat to hand out, it should certainly go to Chulk. I wonder when we're going to see the Jamesian 'relief ace' system sweep the Major Leagues: you put your best bullpen guy in the game anytime after the 6th if the game is tied or you are ahead by just one. Some manager has to have the right guy and make it work, have it celebrated, then everyone will copy it and it will be that way for 20 years. Toronto and Boston are believers but they didn't have the personnel when they tried that approach. And I don't think Epstein has the balls to have Foulke pitching as 'relief ace' instead of 9th inning closer.

Here is a list of players who went straight from college to the big leagues: http://www.baseball-almanac.com/feats/feats9.shtml. Keep in mind a few of these guys, like the illustrious Brian Milner, subsequently were sent down, but most never spent a day in the minors.

Since Major League Baseball began its free agent draft in 1965, a total of 18 selections have advanced to the majors without playing in the minors.

But it should be noted that at least one of those, Mike Morgan, eventually went to the minors. Wasn't it Charlie O's idea to have him pitch right out of high school (back in the day when he decided many a matter about the team's operation)? Love Morgan's K/BB ratios as an 18-year old and a 19-year old: 8/0 and 50/17 (yes, that's BB's first, K's second).

"Yo" Vinnie has good stuff, but he doesn't always know where it's going.

The Expos totally bailed him out on the weekend. He had a lot of trouble finding the strike zone, and the Expos decided to swing anyways. If and when he has blowups, they will be control related. Come to think of it, two of the inherited runners Ligtenberg allowed to score were put on base with walks.
_Rich - Tuesday, July 06 2004 @ 10:16 PM EDT (#53560) #
Xavier Nady is another one on the list who went straight to the bigs, but has since spent most of this career in the minors. I think most of the other players were never sent down.

To be honest based on the numbers and scouting reports I felt Chulk and Arnold were similar pitchers with similar stuff. Since Vinny came up I've been shocked at just how good his stuff is. Hard hard sinker and a very sharp slider which batters don't seem to be able to pick up out of his hand for the most part. He's definately picked his game up a notch since leaving the rotation.

If the Jays ever did decide to insert Vinny back into the rotation he might be able to duplicate what Justin Miller was doing when he was healthy.
_Rob - Tuesday, July 06 2004 @ 11:37 PM EDT (#53563) #
Speaking of bad segues, I asked a question a while ago but never got an answer to it.
Why did Dave Stieb miss the last part of the 1992 season? I noticed (on B-Ref) he did not pitch in the postseason that year. Injury?
_Jacko - Tuesday, July 06 2004 @ 11:47 PM EDT (#53564) #

If the Jays ever did decide to insert Vinny back into the rotation he might be able to duplicate what Justin Miller was doing when he was healthy.

It's pretty clear that Chulk is throwing harder now than he was as a starter. He's added 4-5 MPH to his fastball since returning to the bullpen. Is it possible the added velocity is a result of Chulk not having to pace himself? Known in other circles as the "Gagne Effect"?

Also, BA agrees on the Jason Arnold comparison. From the 2004 BA Prospect Handbook, I quote:

"He's comparable to Jason Arnold in results and track record. His fastball has better movement and his slider is an average pitch, but he lack's Arnold's plus changeup and needs to command his change better. He throws a slurvy curve as well."

I wonder if Arnold's future is in the bullpen as well...he was a closer in college, wasn't he?
_MatO - Wednesday, July 07 2004 @ 12:04 AM EDT (#53565) #
Stieb developed a bad shoulder and a herniated disk during the 1991 season and eventually had back surgery. He returned from the injuries in 1992 but pitched poorly. Eventually he went on the DL in August of 1992 due to an elbow problem and missed the rest of the season. He was declared a free agent after the season.

Guys - unrelated, but an interesting question. I noticed the Yankees' recent protest was denied by the commissioner's office.

Can ANYONE remember ANYTIME when a game "played under protest" was actually overturned or whatever would happen in such a case?

Just wondering...

COMN for the story.

Teams often play a game under protest when they feel a call or rule interpretation is so bad it warrants the commissioner's office ruling. The manager agrees to play the game, but under the assumption that he feels the call is so poor that the remainder of the game is not valid.

For those not attending the game, you missed a hilarious race.

It was dubbed the Race to End All Races. The Seattle Space Needle and the CN Tower had a footrace (two guys in costume). The CN Tower won, but I'm pretty sure it was rigged. Before the actual race, they had a couple of promo videos showing the CN Tower training for the race to the sounds of the theme from Rocky. After, they had a slow-mo replay of the finish to the theme from Chariots of Fire. I loved it!

interesting take, I had to listen to seattle's announcers, i dont remember their batter, but it was a flyout to berg, the announcer said, THAT BALL IS HIT HAR....TO the leftfielder in shallow leftfield. The announcer about soiled himself thinking it was a home run in the upperdeck only to see the left fielder run in to catch it.

I watched Conan tonight, and he mentioned the towers duel. When Conan was in Toronto last Feb., they had a competition: which was better, the CN Tower or the Seattle Space Needle? The only way to resolve this conflict was, of course, mud wrestling. The CN Tower won handily.

On tonight's show, Conan showed the mud wrestling and mentioned that the Blue Jays had called him up and asked for the towers to return since the Jays were hosting the Mariners. He said "Sure, you can borrow our towers - but only if you take our worst character, the FedEx Pope."

The FedEx Pope, to whom I was introduced in that bit, really cracked me up. I love Conan.

Forgive me for not knowing whats going on but... "protest"? Anyone mind filling me in?

Jobu, I think the George Brett pine tar incident was protested by the Royals and they had to go back and play the rest of the game from that point, a game the Royals actually won. If I had more time, I'd check up on it. Not sure if it's happened since then. That Posada runner interference really was a horrible call though.
_Daryn - Wednesday, July 07 2004 @ 08:43 AM EDT (#53580) #
I think the Protest on the pine tar incident was given more credit due to the gross errors the Umps made in ruling that he was "out" and since he was the third out in the top of the 9th, with the home team ahead 3-4, the game was "over",

Being "out" is not a defined penalty for that rule, in fact there was no defined penalty,...

Because of the that it can be said that the game was not "replayed" from any point, rather just restarted playing from the point that the umps applied the wrong penalty... in effect, they got away without answering the question...

Also, you are only supposed to be able to get relief on a question of rule, not a judgement,... I didn't see the play, but in an interferrence call, its the Umps Judgement if there was or wasn't...
