Okay, so I'm in some rough shape this week.

In addition to the worst sunburn of my life, sustained during coach Mrs. Hank's baseball team's unlikely run to the final at their weekend tournament (including a dramatic bottom of the last inning two-out, nobody on, down by three runs comeback that went single, hit by pitch, single, grand slam), I think I've broken my right thumb, which makes me pretty useless for almost anything that involves, well, anything.

So, who's coming out to taunt the Yankees? Remember, the Dome will be overrun with New Yorkers, so we'll need all the lung power we can assemble. Bird Droppings has provisionally committed the O-Drum to Tuesday's game, and I'm working on two banners for this week: the updated A-Rod dollar bill (including Mr. Jeter and upping the total value of the bill to half a billion dollars) and a Level of Excellence banner for the recently retired Pat Hentgen. I'm working on the Hentgen banner first, so it should be done for tonight, and I'll do the A-Rod one as well if I have time, but it may be delayed until tomorrow.

And hey, remember how the New York faithful booed Carlos Delgado at every at-bat? Who wants to see how loud we can boo each and every Yankee? That'll drive 'em nuts on the YES Network.

That would be great. And you know the rest of the Dome would chime in. Almost everyone likes to boo a villian.

Boo some for me.

Hey NFH,

I'll be at the game but I'm down near the base lines. I'm feeling tired and grumpy after a camping weekend and will undoubtedly be abusing Shefield the entire game.

You take 3 days off and there's a trade and a legend retires. Never take your eyes off the field.

Yeah, I know. Along with "Never leave before the end of the final inning", "Never miss a baseball game that you could be at" is a good motto.

We were planning on being at the Saturday game, too, but when Mrs. Hank's team of eight year olds won their first two games in stirring fashion, we suddenly had a conflict of plans. They lost in the final, 11-10. In addition to taking silver, their team also unexpectedly blitzed the skills competition, winning sprinting and fielding categories and placing strongly in the longest drive competition. It made for a pretty fantastic baseball weekend. After the final game, Mrs. Hank and I went to a restaurant to eat dinner and catch the end of the Jays game on TV, and the ticker said HENTGEN RETIRES and we were just shocked.

You mean MVP Gary Sheffield? Cashman's a pretty smart guy. Sheffield, and not Guerrero, is leading the league in Win Shares.
_alsiem - Monday, July 26 2004 @ 10:22 AM EDT (#48477) #
MVP Gary Sheffield?

Yep, that's the sack of crap that I'm talking about. His performance is irrelevant, once you sign on to the dark side you're finished. Hope it keeps him out of the Hall.
Thomas - Monday, July 26 2004 @ 10:32 AM EDT (#48478) #
Jeter and ARod absolutely must hear it. Giambi, too. And anybody else people care to nominate.

I like the idea of chanting, "Three Straight Years" or something similar at points.
Named For Hank - Monday, July 26 2004 @ 10:38 AM EDT (#48479) #
I think we should also prepare ourselves for the inevitable: the number of New Yorkers there (and they usually number in the thousands for a Yankees series) may try to boo Delgado in our home stadium. Contingency plans, anyone?
Mike Green - Monday, July 26 2004 @ 10:50 AM EDT (#48480) #
Somehow I doubt New Yorkers would boo Carlos here (New Yorkers are Democrats 2-1). Contingency plans in the unlikely event that they do:

1. the simple extra-loud cheer, or, if you want to be political,
2. break into a full-throated version of "all we are saying is
give peace a chance" or if you're feeling soulful, "War".

I'd probably vote for 1. Fans are there for a game, and might indeed be feeling quite war-like, when the Yankees are in town.
Thomas - Monday, July 26 2004 @ 11:02 AM EDT (#48481) #
I'd vote an extra-loud standing ovation, myself.
Named For Hank - Monday, July 26 2004 @ 11:10 AM EDT (#48482) #
I vote extra-loud ovation plus booing every Yankee. ;)
Mike Green - Monday, July 26 2004 @ 11:24 AM EDT (#48483) #
See what I mean. War wins over peace every time, even at da Box :)

COMN: Just blow this picture up, give it to a couple hundred Jays fans and watch as hilarity ensues. Consider it a gift from Boston fans for Terry Adams.

Mike, shouldn't that read PWN3D?
_Moffatt - Monday, July 26 2004 @ 01:17 PM EDT (#48488) #
I actually did a Google image search to see what was the most dominant spelling, and the straight forward "owned" seem to come up the most often.

How sad is it that I actually researched that?
_Moffatt - Monday, July 26 2004 @ 01:20 PM EDT (#48489) #
Is this better:

fark2 (45k image)

Wow. I did a lousy job centering that.
_Mick - Monday, July 26 2004 @ 01:23 PM EDT (#48490) #
Hope it keeps him out of the Hall.

Actually, it will probably help him get in, in the same way going to Houston will hurt Pettitte's chances; he was going to get in as a career Yankee, even if he didn't deserve it.

P.S. Jason, take off your mask next time. You're not that pretty.
_Paul S - Monday, July 26 2004 @ 01:53 PM EDT (#48491) #
I saw the Labour Day game last year, and the Yankee fans around me were just ridiculous. "You haven't said one positive thing about a Yankee!" was an actual complaint I recieved. I kept my stuff G rated and this lady was still complaining that her kids were hearing it.

Too bad I won't be able to encourage Weaver to give up a dinger this year. "C'mon, Weave! We know you got one in ya, buddy!" Then Josh hits Windows.
_Alex Obal - Monday, July 26 2004 @ 02:19 PM EDT (#48492) #
I'd also go for the Thunderous Ovation method to offset any booing of Delgado.

"You haven't said one positive thing about a Yankee!"

That's a fantastic line. Where were you sitting?

Pat Hentgen: Most deserving to be on the Blue Jays Wall of Excellence!
Thomas - Monday, July 26 2004 @ 03:44 PM EDT (#48497) #
NFH, if I'm there I'll meet you about 15 minutes beforehand in 518 and then we'll go to the Level of Excellence to put it up? Or will you not be getting there until 7:30? I figure you could use a hand.
_erik - Monday, July 26 2004 @ 03:50 PM EDT (#48498) #
Jeter and ARod absolutely must hear it. Giambi, too. And anybody else people care to nominate.

oh, let giambi off... reports on the radio say his parasites are a potentially life-threatening infection. It's very possibly he wont play again this year, if ever.

boo and throw things at everyone else as much as you like, however.
Named For Hank - Monday, July 26 2004 @ 03:56 PM EDT (#48499) #
It has to be blue-on-blue with a white outline, because that's what all the other Level of Excellence banners look like.

Thomas, I'll be arriving probably at 7:30 unless I can sneak out a few minutes before six. Alex is bringing the duct tape, but the more the merrier for a big operation like this.

I'll meet you guys in 518 or thereabouts. Who knows what it will be like with the Yankees in town.
Thomas - Monday, July 26 2004 @ 04:02 PM EDT (#48500) #
Well, we'll help you put it up when you arrive, then.

I didn't realise that Giambi's bout with the parasites was so serious (detailed in advance scout, as well). Not that he'll be playing, but I withdraw Giambi from the list regardless.

Sneak peek for people reading this thread -- I'm slowly putting up images from Friday night in the baseball gallery at my website. COMN. There are three up there right now: Vernon hitting the ball, Hinske rounding third and Rios taking a warm-up swing in the on-deck circle, all black & white.

I'll put up more as I have time.

It has to be blue-on-blue with a white outline, because that's what all the other Level of Excellence banners look like.

Of course. I forgot this was for the Level of Excellence. I'll look for it tonight on RSN - they usually show the Cheer Club banners, even if they don't know who the Cheer Club is. :)
_Spicol - Monday, July 26 2004 @ 05:03 PM EDT (#48503) #
Great pics, Aaron. I like the Rios one especially...very good framing.

I have about 80 more to go through, but those are the cream of the crop.

As of right now, it's 6:48pm and we've shot 4 sketches out of a 13. Tonight's gunna be a late one!

Anyways, looks like I'm gunna be around for Tuesday and Wednesday...

Those plans could change but as of right now I'll be at two games this week with the drum.
_Jobu - Tuesday, July 27 2004 @ 12:12 AM EDT (#48507) #
Ah man, wish I could have been there tonight to see the Hentgen sign in the level of excellence. Did it look as nice as I dream it would?

How were the seats? could you sit together and not be mobed by MFY fans?

Lookin forward to being there tomorrow! ON ON BLUE JAYS!!!!
_6-4-3 - Tuesday, July 27 2004 @ 01:45 AM EDT (#48508) #
I was at the game tonight, and I was looking forward to seeing the Hentgen Level of Excellence sign. I was sitting in left field, 200 level, and I periodically glanced up to look for the Hentgen sign. It was only in the middle of the 7th that I saw a blue rectangular sign down the 1st baseline in the 500 level, and I realized that it had to be the Hentgen sign.

To put it plainly, the current sign is totally illegible. I know you were going for the same scheme as the official Level of Excellence signs, but if you're going to use the Hentgen sign again tommorow, you really should either make the white outline around the lettering thicker, or use white letters or a white background.
Named For Hank - Tuesday, July 27 2004 @ 06:51 AM EDT (#48509) #
Yeah, it was a hard choice -- to make it legible or to make it match. I made it match, and hopefully it read on TV.

What it needed to be was bigger, but I can only do so much.
Named For Hank - Tuesday, July 27 2004 @ 01:22 PM EDT (#48510) #
So, who's coming out tonight? I hear that there will be a drum present.
_Jobu - Tuesday, July 27 2004 @ 01:47 PM EDT (#48511) #
I'll be there with Yankee hating bells on...

Are the billion dollar bills ready?
_Rob - Tuesday, July 27 2004 @ 02:04 PM EDT (#48512) #
I won't be there, but I wanted to tell the BBJC that Tom Cheek was wondering where "our drummer" was yesterday, during the 3rd or 4th inning.
Even a Jays fan in less-than-perfect health notices the O-Drum. Good work; keep it up.
Named For Hank - Tuesday, July 27 2004 @ 02:08 PM EDT (#48513) #
Unfortunately, the billion dollar bills will not be ready for this homestand.
