Justin Miller got roughed up a bit (4.2 innings, 6 hits, 6 runs, 6 walks, 1 K, 3 HRs) and the Jays' comeback fell short as Toronto lost to the Evil Empire 8-7.

Recaps:
Jays fall short against Yanks - Fordin
Losing hard on Delgado & Gibbons - Rutsey
Reunion turns ugly for Jays - Baker

Notes:
Different approach for Frasor - Fordin
Jays tweak Frasor's role - Rutsey (Note to Sun editor: It's Speier, not Speir)

After weeks of watching Jason Frasor struggle with the game on the line, Toronto manager John Gibbons wants to try a different approach. He won't forget about Frasor, but he won't use him exclusively as a closer either.

"We're not in a pennant race. We've got to do what's best for the kid right now, since he's a big part of it," said Gibbons. "I'm not saying he's out of that closing role, but don't be surprised if you see him a little earlier."

So who steps into the void? Gibbons said he'll use his whole bullpen, but veterans like Justin Speier and Kerry Ligtenberg will factor into the mix. Speier has been particularly hot -- he's allowed just six earned runs in his last 22 appearances, good for a 2.16 ERA over that corresponding time-frame.

"We'll probably start going with Spy a little more. He's pitched good and he's been through the long season, with results," said Gibbons.

* Rich Griffin feels the Jays bullpen needs a veteran voice.

* The voice of Blue Jays still ringing - Millson

Until June 3, when he missed a game in Oakland, Calif., because of the death of his father, Cheek had broadcast every Toronto Blue Jays game since the snowy opening day for the franchise at Exhibition Stadium on April 7, 1977.

And (today) at the SkyDome, when the Blue Jays play the New York Yankees, Cheek will be honoured before a large crowd.

He said he never gave much thought to his string of consecutive games, he was just doing his job. "And this is where I want to be," he said.

* Today's Game Ted Lilly, coming off the best start of the season, takes the mound against Kevin Brown. Game time is 4:05.

The way the Yankees walk over the AL East, it's as if they have Diamonds on the Soles of Their Shoes

CHEER CLUB SIGHTING

Watching sportsnet last night at around 2, 3-ish, I saw the recap of the game. Immediately afterwards in a new segment, the nature of which I am unsure because I had the volume down, they showed some footage of Tom Cheek doing commentary, and then cut to a picture of the entire cheer club (probably around 8 of us) behind the "We miss you Tom" banner from waaaaay back, at the first CC game I was ever at.

Quite cool - looks like our faces are part of Sportsnet's stock footage now.

Isn't the streak being honored before Sunday's game? Today is Retro Hat Day.

The Drum will be up in the 500s on the first base side in the first empty section, probably 510 or somewhere around there.

Retro Hat Day? Nooooooooo!

If anyone doesn't want their hat, I'll gladly toss a few bucks in their general direction.

I'll do the honours of giving out a prize:

mathesond wins a picture of a bunny. Not just any bunny, a cute bunny

I think this is the responsible decision to take as well it sounds to me like its being handled with class. Frasor has had an unexpectedly great season. He deserves to finish out this campaign with dignity.

I've felt this was the move to make for the past ten or so days and have been harping on it a bit. Gibby and Lefty appear to be on the same page. :-)

On another note. I was at the Argos - Lions game last night. Boy the Argos sure looked flat. The had a total of 56 yards offense in the first half. Casey Printers ripped apart the Argos highly rated secondary. The game drew 29500 fans. Its nice to see the CFL attracting the fans again.

Guys, I'm just wondering what the four or five most important defensive stats are. I'm thought i might take a look at some potential FA signings for the jays.
Pistol - Saturday, August 28 2004 @ 03:31 PM EDT (#39142) #
Are there even 4 or 5 defensive stats?

I suspect anyway that defense isn't a priority of the Jays free agent signings this offseason.

Thanks Brent, that is a cute bunny. I just hope it doesn't attack, I'm out of Holy Hand Grenades....(goes to consult the Book of Armaments)

According to the stats at ESPN.com the Jays this year are 2nd in the AL in Fielding %, 2nd in Zone rating, 6th in Range Factor, and 2nd in least amount of Errors.

Who would have thought at the end of last year that the Jays would have one of the best fielding teams and rotations this season, while also having one of the worst hitting teams. Bizarre.

Pistol, well i was thinking in regards to an allround comparison at a few positions. I was thinking fielding percentage, range factor and EQR. Wasn't sure if there was one that peeps thought was useless, or one they were really into.

Maybe the team fielding stats were dragged up by all those games Chris Gomez played at 1B.

Don't worry, Brent, the retro hats didn't arrive from the manufacturer in time, so we just got new home grey hats.
_Rob - Saturday, August 28 2004 @ 10:45 PM EDT (#39148) #
That sucks -- being promised retro hats and getting the ugly home ones instead. I wouldn't have taken it (that is, if I had a ticket).
