Jeff Kent signed a 2 year $17 million contract with the Dodgers.

Two questions to ponder:

1. will Kent displace Cora at second, or will he be moved to third base to take over from Beltre?
2. how does this affect his Hall of Fame chances?

For reference, here's my recent Hall watch piece on Kent, Alomar and Biggio.

Hasn't Kent been pretty insistent on staying at 2B?

And IIRC, he had a really good UZR this year, so I suspect he'll be at second every day next season.

""Kent doesn't case where Tracy puts him.

"I play this game with the cliche that if you can hit, they'll find a place for you," Kent said. "I love to hit, I love to swing the bat, and I believe that I'm a great second baseman as well. But I also have the tools that allow me to play first base and third base. So I'm comfortable enough to wait this out and I have no problems with that at all." ""

And if you buy what Kent said then I've got a bridge in Brooklyn for you. Standard line from a guy coming to a new town. Kent would probably accept third, but I doubt he'd be willing to go to first base unless forced.

Re: Jeff. Hate to say it but a great move for the Dodgers. Actually, what else can you say? The man has the most homers of any second baseman ever. He's had clutch BIG hits for two different teams in the post season. Now they have the pleasant problem, which I'm sure Tracy will solve, of finding a spot for Cora.
Maybe this will push Sabean to get the extra bat -- who? -- the Giants haven't had since -- yeah, Kent.

Yeah, Mike, I think this has the potential to jack up Kent's HOF chances. Playing for the Yankees, Cubs or Dodgers will do that for you. (Sorry, Sox fans, Boston may finally have a ring but they don't have the attention of the national media in the same way L.A. does. And White Sox and Mets and Angels fans, niff and whine all you want, but for historical importance, you are viewed as second-class citizens in the Big Three Cities.)

It could also HURT his HOF chances for the same reason. If he spends two years on and off the DL and hits .223 in that spotlight, he'll fall back to "Borderline" in many voters' eyes. On the other hand, if he steps into Jackie Robinson's old position and leads the Dodgers to their first ring in almost two decades, he will walk in on the first ballot.

Kent gives them all kinds of flexibility. Leverage in dealing with Beltre. He can play second if they sign Beltre or Koskie. He can play first if somehow they fill every other position.
