The moment is finally here: the Jays are playing an actual baseball game! Gustavo Chacin is starting for the good guys, and personally I'm hoping that he displays a little more of that magic that we saw at the end of last season.

Start time is listed as 1:05pm. Last time I checked there wasn't a Jays broadcast of the game, but the Twins are running it on their radio network. Internet feeds are supposed to be blacked out, but maybe we'll get lucky and find one that works.

Play ball!

I'm overly excited and since I have another half hour to kill before game time, I've decided to completely hype myself up. I cleverly moved all of my work to either yesterday or Monday, so I can crank the music and jump up and down like an idiot here at work.

So far I've been playing Sultans of Swing by Dire Straits and Hang On To Yourself by Bowie -- I need more suggestions for my pre-game hype playlist. Anyone?
Blue in SK - Friday, March 04 2005 @ 12:28 PM EST (#104392) #
The obvious - "Centrefield" by John Fogerty.
Matthew E - Friday, March 04 2005 @ 12:32 PM EST (#104393) #
The one song you need on a playlist for the first game of the year is Thin Lizzy's 'The Boys Are Back In Town':

"Guess who just got back today? Those wild-eyed boys who'd been away."

and

"Jukebox in the corner blasting out my favourite song; the nights are getting warmer, it won't be long. Won't be long 'til summer comes, now that the boys are here again. The boys are back in town."
Named For Hank - Friday, March 04 2005 @ 12:36 PM EST (#104395) #
Those are two good ones. No Fogerty on the iBook here, but I have The Boys Are Back In Town.
Matthew E - Friday, March 04 2005 @ 12:44 PM EST (#104397) #
A good substitute for Fogerty is 'Brown-Eyed Handsome Man' by either Chuck Berry or Buddy Holly. I prefer the Holly cover to the Berry original, but that's just me.

what about, You Aint Seen Nothing Yet - BTO. that would definitely be my 'strolin' to the plate' song if i was a big leaguer.

Think you've seen everything? How about a guy turning a doubleplay with a bottle of Gatorade in his back pocket?

So far, the only feed I know of is the Twins MLB.com feed, which requires a $14.95 US Gameday Audio subscription. All other stations that I've found online that broadcast the Twins are blacked out.

"Vince Perkins the right hander from British Columbia is pitching. He was 1-4 for Dunedin last year, but somehow made it on the 40 man roster"

Followed by 2 strikeouts and a grounder. Gee, maybe that's why :-)

Top 9th: Nitkowski still in there on the hill. Crozier, started in right, now at first. Count goes even at 2-2. Full Count. Pitch low and outside, Crozier checks his swing and heads to 1st w/ a walk. Appeal to 3rd base ump denied.

Just reporting what I hear Ducey!

What an ending here! Down by one in the ninth, and an Dodger error (the fourth of the game for LA) scored two runs!

One out, bases loaded, ground ball to first base. Whoever was playing first threw the ball into left field and two runners raced around to score.

Huckaby batting now for Quiroz. Count goes to 3-1. Huckaby fouls it off to load the count. Fouls back a fastball - count remains full. Crozier, who was running, has to head back to first. Beautiful day today - Sun and high sky! Huckaby grounds into a 6-6-3 double play.

Singleton, batting for Gross, bounces one up the middle for a base hit - the 6th of the game for the Jays.

0-2 count, Negron (the left handed batter) lashes one over leaping Munson at third and down the line. Singleton stops at 2nd.

Rob Bowen catching for the Twins. Alfiro works the count even at 2-2. Next pitch hits Alfiro on the foot to load the bases for Bryant.

Perkins has a nuclear fastball and a filthy slider. He's a Canadian who is friends with Rich Harden and their stuff has been compared in the past. The Jays are just waiting on him to show any semblance of control. That's a nice start to the spring for him and I expect they might challenge him with a promotion to AA despite his struggles in Dunedin. He's one of those guys who will come really fast when/if his mechanics start clicking consistently because he already has the stuff to dominate.
Mike D - Friday, March 04 2005 @ 03:41 PM EST (#104547) #
Hey, Kevin, are you going to be able to join me at Yankee Stadium to see the Jays again this season?

Bryant Nelson (http://www.sports-wired.com/profiles/NE/tbc20144.asp) fouls off a 2-2 pitch, then just gets a piece of another off speed pitch to stay alive. Fouls off a third 2-2 pitch. Fly ball to right center to a running Tyner to end the inning and leave the bases loaded.

Bottom 9th: Whiteside pitching. Singleton makes a nice running catch down the left field line in foul territory off Munson. Maza pops out to Davenport in short right as Nelson crashed into him.

Kevin, that might have been the worst play-by-play in the history of this sport. But there are are a few people here, including myself, who would like to buy you a drink and shake your hand.

And Kevin...

(failing to notice that everyone has left the room)

Worst play by play? Come on. There is such a lag with the site when I click to post. And there is the preview step in between. In order to get out what happened an be back for typing more of what happens next, that's the best you are gonna get.

Loneliness, thats the bottom line. I was never happy as a child . . .

Do you know what its like falling in the mud and getting kicked, in the head. With an iron boot? Of course you don't, no one does, that never happens. Sorry Kevin, that's a dumb question.

kpataky - Friday, March 04 2005 @ 03:56 PM EST (#104564) #
OK then. That explains it.
Magpie - Friday, March 04 2005 @ 03:56 PM EST (#104565) #
Sorry, Kev - I was referencing Roberet Stack from Airplane. That's what he says to Ted Stryker after he saves the day and lands the plane...

I'm getting esoteric in my old age.

We would have been utterly lost without you today. We really do want to buy you a drink and shake your hand.

Rob - Friday, March 04 2005 @ 04:26 PM EST (#104571) #
He gave up a hard fly ball to CF someone with the number 873 on their jersey and then there was the game-ending ground ball, an easy 3-6-3 that the first baseman threw away. I meant to check out his slider, but I got distracted and saw just those two ABs.

Looks like Gustavo really wants to make the team. He started despite battling a fever this week and did very well with no walks, three strikeouts, two singles, and four broken bats. That kind of determination is going to score big marks with the brass.

I'm all for giving Towers every opportunity given what he's done but from a pure potential standpoint it's going to be hard to keep Chacin down if he mounts this kind of a challenge the rest of the spring.

Chacin also taught Francisco Rosario how to throw the cutter, presumbably to help him against lefthanded batters. If Rosario can throw it as well as Chacin with the arm strength he has it could become a major weapon for him.

Speaking of strong arms, from TSN's game summary:

Six Jays relievers did some mop up work from there, with Vince Perkins of Victoria striking out a pair in an impressive eighth.

''How about Perkins, huh? Jeez,'' said Gibbons. ''Overpowering.''

The 23-year-old's stuff has long been praised but he has far too often lacked command of it. Arnsberg has been working on some mechanical adjustments for Perkins that appear to be paying off.

''Vince Perkins was outstanding,'' said Arnsberg. ''He's really been pounding away with some things we've been working on - straightening his line ...

''He's really across his body and off-line, really strides to that third-base side. We explained to him how that's not benefiting him at all. ... I think he's falling for it, hook line and sinker. He may go out and stumble, but we're just trying to make it easier for this kid to throw the ball where he wants it.''

And if Arnsberg can have that kind of an effect on Vince Perkins that quickly then wow. That has to get you excited about the development potential of the young pitchers.

How about some love for the scoreless, hitless inning from Bauxite Spike Lundberg?
Fawaz - Friday, March 04 2005 @ 06:58 PM EST (#104592) #
No kidding - I got the evil eye from my instructor for proclaiming "Spike" out loud as I listened to BBRadio (great job) during class. Between that and someone telling her that I was also watching the Braves game, I have sufficient reason to believe I may be retaking this course...
Mike Green - Friday, March 04 2005 @ 09:10 PM EST (#104595) #
Lots of love for Spike. That was a very satisfying start to the friendlies.

Now, I wonder when Myers will be ready. If it's a week or two into the season, there's nothing wrong with having GQ in a backup role. If longer, they do need to make sure that he gets his PAs.
Craig B - Friday, March 04 2005 @ 09:35 PM EST (#104596) #
Most impressive stat from today - no errors.

A clean, well-played ballgame with tough at-bats. The formula for this team is, I see, already set.
