MLB determined that there was "bad blood" between Toronto and Tampa Bay back in '03, maybe because the Rays thought the Jays were rhyming copycats intent on stealing their cleverly original idea of a black alternate jersey. Since that fateful homestand with its manufactured enmity, well, there has been some halfhearted bad blood.

Sadly, without Victor "My balls, they got a lot of move" Zambrano pitching for Tampa, there's not much of a chance that we'll see a half-dozen hit batsmen, ejections, or a bench-clearing brawl. Or at least we won't see all that started by a perfectly innocent series of wild pitches.

fyi: the pre-game show on the radio started at 12:30 on fan590.com (though I've switched over now to mlb.com).

Tom Cheek sounds a little rusty
mistermike - Saturday, March 05 2005 @ 12:46 PM EST (#104639) #
Yeah, what's up with Tom Cheek? He's stumbling over every other word and generally sounds nervous during the pregame show.

Doubt the ironman at your peril.

Let's hope he's feeling good and ready for a full season. Rusty or not, he's still the voice of summer.

Are there any fellow West Coasters here? Single-game tickets for the Jays v. Mariners in Seattle May 30, 31st, and June 1st went on sale this morning at 10am Pacific time.

I just snagged some good seats behind the plate...I can't wait!

I'm also hoping to make it out to the dome this year, though it may be too big of a trip, as I live in Victoria

5-1 Rays in the mid-fifth

A few more unearned runs
King Ryan - Saturday, March 05 2005 @ 02:37 PM EST (#104674) #
I'll take "runs without hits" over last year's "hits without runs." :-D

Home Run Koskie!!
Cristian - Saturday, March 05 2005 @ 02:42 PM EST (#104676) #
2 run homer by Koskie. 5-3 Rays.
VBF - Saturday, March 05 2005 @ 02:46 PM EST (#104679) #
Well, so far it seems like the Jays are unintentionally abandonning their new philosophy, with those seemingly bad errors, and then the home run by Koskie (although I find it difficult to have a problem with that).
Quwyetr - Saturday, March 05 2005 @ 02:48 PM EST (#104680) #
3 run home run by Brown (?)off of Koch...not looking good for Billy...
joemayo - Saturday, March 05 2005 @ 02:48 PM EST (#104681) #
Wow. Koch still sucks. gives up 3 straight hits, including a 3 run jack
Cristian - Saturday, March 05 2005 @ 02:49 PM EST (#104682) #
Koch comes on in the 6th and...

Single
Double
Homerun

8-1 Rays
Cristian - Saturday, March 05 2005 @ 02:52 PM EST (#104684) #
Woops. The Brown homer off Koch wasn't so massive so as to take 2 runs from the Jays.

It's 8-3 not 8-1.
VBF - Saturday, March 05 2005 @ 03:24 PM EST (#104685) #
I'm not half as bugged about Koch as I am about the defense. 4 errors, which doesn't include Quiroz missing an easy through from the outfield is starting to worry me. At least its happening now and not Opening Day I hope.

It seems like a sell-out at Knology Park. I'd like to believe that this game doesn't turn off the buzz around there too much.
Joe - Saturday, March 05 2005 @ 03:30 PM EST (#104686) #
It'd be nice of some of the people in this thread gave their head a firm shake. It's the freaking second game of Spring Training! Errors, miscues, not having your hitting stroke yet, etc are to be expected.
Oleg - Saturday, March 05 2005 @ 04:03 PM EST (#104688) #
So, is the new Batter's Box no longer posting articles to comment on? I had assumed Griffin's latest would be up.
VBF - Saturday, March 05 2005 @ 04:05 PM EST (#104689) #
Oh Yea, I know. These early spring Training games don't mean alot at all. Although 5 errors concerns me a little, even though 3 were commited by John Hattig.

I think it's a stretch to say that Koch still sucks. Maybe not a stretch, but you surely haven't given him a fair chance to prove otherwise. He has a month to prove to us who Billy Koch really is. One inning in the second Spring Training game IMO isn't enough to merit him "sucking".

mathesond - Saturday, March 05 2005 @ 04:06 PM EST (#104690) #
It may be the second game of spring training, but at least Koch is in midseason form :)

The way I see it, if it isn't on tv, then it's not really happening and therefore doesn't count
Mike D - Saturday, March 05 2005 @ 04:06 PM EST (#104691) #
Oleg, if you want to post and discuss Griffin, please use the "Notes From Nowhere" thread. The latest is "A Canadian Topic (Kinda)."

Oleg, if you want to post and discuss Griffin, please use the "Notes From Nowhere" thread.

You mean the one that's already fallen to the second page? One of my favorite things about battersbox is coming in every day to see a list of Jays links for the day and some intelligent conversation regarding what's been written. I hope this isnt going away and that the lack of links posting is just because it's still spring training. Lord knows I have no love for Griffin, but he has been writing a column almost every day recently and they havent been that bad.

Tom L - Saturday, March 05 2005 @ 04:49 PM EST (#104693) #
Yes, I agree Ryan C. Where are all the links with current Jays news? Have they been done away with? It was always so convenient to come to the Box to find the latest aritcles, instead of sifting through the net.
Flex - Saturday, March 05 2005 @ 05:24 PM EST (#104694) #
(Formerly Prisoner of Hamilton)

Let me third or fourth the cries for a daily roundup of writings. I applaud the new-look Batter's Box and all the unique content. But it seems a shame to throw out one of the old BB's most-enjoyed features.

And I'd suggest that everybody gathering round the old water cooler to discuss the day's stories provides exactly the sense of community this new version of BB is supposed to encourage.

The way I see it, if it isn't on tv, then it's not really happening and therefore doesn't count

I guess that means that most of the Expo's games over the last few years didn't count either. Makes me feel a little bit better.

jim854 - Saturday, March 05 2005 @ 06:47 PM EST (#104701) #
I just got back from today's game against the Rays and while the Jays pitching was poor and they made a ton of errors (not all appear in the box score) it is only the second game of the spring AND the Rays are famous for winning in the spring because they traditionally lose during the regular season. It is their practice to play their veterans longer in the spring games than other teams. And they can really hit the ball and run.
The Jays new 3rd base Koskie hit a solid 2 run homerun to make the score a little more respectable late in the game.
Braby21 - Saturday, March 05 2005 @ 06:54 PM EST (#104702) #
I would also like to see links provided on here. I really got used to coming here to find out what the writers had to say about the Jays. I'm all for the new update and the Interactive Magazine, but I don't want to lose the good things that made me keep coming back day after day.
King Ryan - Saturday, March 05 2005 @ 08:37 PM EST (#104711) #
I would like to seventh the motion for the Jays Roundup tyoe dealies. This was the only site you could come to every day and read 150+ new, intelligent posts about recent Jays news. I think the "roster" was concerned with the lack of original content on here, and that's fine, but "Jays Roundup" was the first thing I looked for every morning before work. and I miss it.

P.S. I hate the Devil Rays.

P.P.S Whoever installed "mandatory preview' was a genius. I approve.
Pepper Moffatt - Saturday, March 05 2005 @ 08:41 PM EST (#104712) #
Thanks for your input, everyone! It's really helpful to find out what features of the site people like and which ones they're not as interested in.

I just wish someone had said "I miss all the 80s music references Moffatt used to make". But no one did. Oh well. :)

Anyhow, I've heard you loud and clear. Make sure to check out tomorrow's game report (written by yours truly) and let me know what you think.

sweat - Saturday, March 05 2005 @ 09:31 PM EST (#104715) #
I also miss the daily round up. I guess I dont mind if it is an offseason thing, as there will be game reports that most news articles will fit in. It is definately nice to come to one thread to find those links.
James W - Saturday, March 05 2005 @ 09:51 PM EST (#104717) #
Don't worry Moffatt, I miss the 80's (and sometimes 90's) music references, even if I was never up early enough to be the first to answer them.
Named For Hank - Saturday, March 05 2005 @ 10:37 PM EST (#104718) #
Gents, now that we have game reports (because there are games to report on), you'll have your formerly-called-a-roundup place for all manner of linkage and water-cooler discussion. There will be a new one posted the morning after every game.
bird droppings - Sunday, March 06 2005 @ 06:18 AM EST (#104727) #
I would also like to see a round up again... NFH, this game report will be just like the old round up but with some additional original content?
Brian B. - Sunday, March 06 2005 @ 11:10 AM EST (#104736) #
[Hijack] By the way, since a couple of the (hopefully) in-the-knows are here, what's the story with the O-Drum?

Will there be one, and what do the new Roger's Centre owners have to say about it's use?

P.S. My apologies for the off-topic, but it looked like the original discussion might be over , anyway.
Named For Hank - Sunday, March 06 2005 @ 03:22 PM EST (#104789) #
bd, check out Moffatt's Game Two Report, it's the template.

As to the O-Drum, the original O-Drum is gone, and the O-Drummer, mister bird droppings himself, is in Fez, of all places, so he ain't gonna be coming to the majority of the games this season.

While the Jays seemed to like the O-Drum, it caused some serious headaches for SkyDome staff, so we don't yet know if we're going to be buying a new drum to bring to games this year.

And when I say "we", I mean Jobu, because I'm going to be seriously MIA this year on account of this fatherhood thing.

I'll post a thread about it when things get clearer.
