Read on to see our finalists.

There were plenty of honourable mentions. But I liked the following six headlines the best:

The Jays come back against Mitch Williams in Game Four of the 1993 World Series to win 15-14.
Choice 1: ME-OTCH!

VBF comes through with a succinct summary of the sentiments of Phillies fans.

Dave Winfield kills a seagull at the Ex with a thrown ball.
Choice 2: BYE BYE BIRDIE

To me, this is the headline one would most expect to see at the Post: laugh-out-loud funny, brief, and absolutely heartless. Nice work, Jimmy Larsoni.

Jim Traber breaks up Dave Stieb's no-hitter with two outs in the ninth, in Stieb's first start since having a no-hitter broken up by Julio Franco with two outs in the ninth.
Choice 3: JIM, RATS!

Mick's headline is not only a clever pun, but an apt description of the pain of seeing a banjo hitter interfere with history.

Dock Ellis claims to be under the influence of LSD while pitching a no-hitter.
Choice 4: A ONE HIT NO-HITTER

Choice 5: NONE REACH BASE OFF ACIDIC ACE

Two clever takes on the same event. Gerry's is funny and punchy; Rob's is more subtle, but works on several levels.

Randall Simon clubs a sausage racer in Milwaukee.
Choice 6: WHERE'S THE BEEF?

It took me a second to get the double meaning here. Nicely done, CeeBee.

The choice is yours, Bauxites. The poll will stay open until 11:00 am tomorrow!

Several excellent ones, but I went with 'Where's the Beef'

* It was a catchy 80s slogan
* The bratwurst was knocked down, 'where's the beef'?
* Was it really a big deal? No. So 'where's the beef'?

VBF comes through with a succinct summary of the sentiments of Phillies fans.

I don't want to alter the voting by saying this, but I felt that this would be more the sentiments of Jays fan's since Me-Otch is a play on Bi-otch synonomous with the term "owned".

Back to your regular scheduled vote :)

And thanks for the nomination, Mike.

I am deeply saddened by the results thus far.

How did you choose the finalists? None of my favorites are on here.

King Ryan, I was looking for clever headlines that best summarized the game or incident. There were some entries that were funnier, but were a bit less related to the action on the field.

By the way, there's been some confusion...the poll is part of the sidebar on the left.

The people have spoken!

29.5% A ONE HIT NO-HITTER
22.9% NONE REACH BASE OFF ACIDIC ACE
21.0% BYE BYE BIRDIE
13.3% WHERE'S THE BEEF?
8.6% ME-OTCH!
4.8% JIM, RATS!

Congratulations to Gerry, a worthy winner of the Splashy Headline Contest.

Although Dock Ellis is best known for his years as a Pirate, he also served AL stints with Texas, Oakland and New York. Therefore, Gerry wins a pair of Cheer Club tickets to the 2005 game of his choice, so long as it's against the Rangers, A's or Yankees.

Thanks to everyone for voting, and a special thanks to all who entered!

Thank you Mike.

I would like to thank the members of the Cheer Club for their kind donation. I would also like to thank my agent, Jeff Moorad. Finally I have to say I couldn't have done it without illegal substances, at least the ones Doc Ellis used.
Mick Doherty - Tuesday, May 24 2005 @ 11:36 AM EDT (#117539) #
Four-point-eight percent???

Danny Graves to y'all!!

Mick,

Your MITCH-SLAPPED would have got my vote, that was pretty funny.
