No, that's not a 20-year-old headline about former Jay Jesse ... the Padres have traded Jesse's kid, Josh to the Indians for Class AAA prospects Kevin Kouzmanoff, a 3B "uber-prospect," and and RHRP Andrew Brown.

The rarest of baseball trades -- young talent for young talent in a "challenge" deal of sorts.

I find it interesting that the prospect, Kouzmanoff, is 18 months older than Barfield.

Steal for the indians. Barfield has no upper limit on how good he'll be as a 2b.

A grandslam on the first pitch can go a long way, and the other guy is out of options and a minor league reliever....though I'm sure most pitchers can do good in the NL. Neither of their talents are as established as Barfield.

The Indians have Barfield for 5 years now, and he's young and cheap.

What a steal for Cleveland. Kouzmanoff is good but not a star (Joe Randa-ish) and Brown has poor command despite a good fastball. He's also out of options.

Barfield could be very, very good and the Indians lose nothing with Marte at 3B and Garko at 1B. Wow, I still cannot believe SD did that trade...

Joe Inglett started at second base for the Tribe last year after the Belliard trade and really didn't do all that badly. He is 28 years old and hit .284 last year in 200 ABs. He isn't your A or B solution to the Jays middle infield problem, but he'd come cheap and would be an adequate ninth hitter.

Riccardi should learn from trades like this. Maybe Inglet isn't a bad idea, as long as the trade resembles more this one then the Overbay one.

Before everyone gets too excited about this, Barfield has a big question mark hanging over him.  His defensive play at secondbase is below average and the Padres were considering moving him off second base.  If Barfield turns out to be a league average defender at second then Cleveland did well in this deal, but if he has to move his offensive numbers don't look as good in the outfield.  This is one trade where it will take a year or two to see who wins, both teams are gambling here.

I wouldn't call this a slow news day. I think at the end of the offseason this could still be one of the more interesting trades. I'd actually read (from Dial's numbers and scouting reports) that Barfield's defence was better than advertised. He was supposed to be a lot better around the bag than people thought and he could play fairly deep for a 2B because of his strong arm (remind you of anyone?). For those quick to pile on the Padres, don't forget that Marcus Giles is a likely trade target and that he has already expressed a desire to play with his brother. I'd be surprised if Towers would make this trade without being really confident he'll land Giles.  I agree Shapiro did well, but I don't think it's of the "can't believe that trade happened" class.

Brown is a minor-league releiver, but he's a former top prospect before surgery with a great fastball. He's a flyball pitcher going to PETCO. I'd be surprised if he doesn't have success there. Kouz's ZIPS projection for Cleveland was 286/.342/.465, which fills their 3B hole. This isn't a robbery and Gerry's right, in that it'll take a couple of years to know who came out ahead in this deal.

I wonder if anybody on the Indians ever changed Josh's diapers, as Boomer used to.

This screams personality problem for Barfield to me.  I can't see it as a talent swap.

A great watch as always, the Play of the Year nominees are up:

As much as some of the other plays blew me away, I can't say no to a guy breaking his nose to make a catch. Honourable mentions to Gary Matthews Jr., Barry Zito, Tad Iguchi, the Twins and the D-Rays.

Some people like Kouzmanoff more than Marte as a third baseman. I certainly don't, but it seems to me quite possible that this trade is simply about perceptions of talent and positional need (with the Padres needing a third baseman and feeling that they have another option at second in the bag- Giles perhaps, while the Indians need a second baseman).

The Indians are in good shape.

I've got to say that while the  Rowand catch is impressive just because of the balls it takes to get it done for me its between Matthews Jr and Iguchi.

I remember watching the Iguchi play happening and it still amazes me, the guy just hung in mid air forever.  The mattews play was equally impressive I dont know if Ive ever seen a guy get that much elevation to rob someone of a homer.

i find the overwhelming response in favor of CLE for this trade pretty bizarre. I think Barfield has upside due to his Hm/Aw splits.. but it's definitely not a steal. if SD wins the division you'd have to rate them as the winners short term. And i think that's a key issue that people are overlooking - SD has some old players... they are close to winning the division and have the possiblity of upgrading and still getting some youth in return AND fill a hole. I saw rumours of Linebrink for MGiles which would totally be a steal in my mind. this gives SD a pretty good offense with Giles they have good/decent plate discipline everywhere except SS/C . maybe they lose offense at Petco but it seems to me that getting on base as much as possible would be the ideal for a pitching extreme environment. IF SD gets Giles, then lookout. also.. SD has been pretty good with cobbling together bullpens over the years. Every time i think about this I am mroe convinced that this coudl be a GREAT trade for San Diego. IT isn't yet.. and there's still a lot of risk
