The 2006 AL and NL Rookies of the Year have been announced.

In a tight NL race, Hanley Ramirez overcame a possible vote split with teammate Dan Uggla (who finished third) to edge Ryan Zimmerman for the honor. In the AL, Justin Verlander continued '06 Tiger magic and held off Red Sox closer Jon Papelbon, snaring 26 of the 28 possible first-place votes to coast to the victory.

Personally, I would have gone with ...

... Zimmerman in the NL and Francisco Liriano (he was third) in the AL. But I don't get a vote. What d'y'all think, Bauxites?

Liriano is very tempting.  Verlander threw 65 more innings but allowed 46 more earned runs, or an ERA of 6.37 over those extra innings pitched.  For what it is worth Verlander went 5-6 in the extra decisions he had too.  This would make me put Liriano as ROY over Verlander.

Papelbon vs Liriano - Liriano threw 53 more innings with a 3.74 ERA.  That still has a lot  of value, thus I'd keep Liriano ahead of Papelbon.  Verlander thew 118 more innings than Papelbon with a 5.19 ERA.  Some value still (basically a bit below league average but a lot of IP - would've been nice here instead of Towers).  So I'd go Liriano, Verlander, Papelbon but I could be convinced to shift Papelbon to #2.

Papelbon's innings were much more high leverage than either of the other guys, but Liriano's ERA was positively dominant. I would have gone Liriano-Papelbon-Verlander, but they are all truly amazing young pitchers.
