You know the drill.

Cole St. Clair, LHP, Rice
Baseball America Rank: 56
Year Innings ERA K/9 BB/9 HR/9 H/9
2005 47 3.26 11.9 2.3 0.6 6.7
2006 74.1 1.82 12.1 3.2 0.2 4.7
2007 16.1 2.76 11.2 2.8 0.0 6.7

St. Clair had a shoulder injury at the beginning of the season so he hasn't pitched nearly as much this year. However, in his limited innings this year he's looked just as effective as last year. There's some thought that he might be able to convert to starting. Given his lack of innings this year it's hard to have any idea where he might go in the draft.

Wes Roemer, RHP, Cal St Fullerton
BA Rank: 65
Year Innings ERA K/9 BB/9 HR/9 H/9
2005 90 3.80 7.1 1.5 0.1 8.6
2006 155 2.38 8.4 0.4 0.5 7.3
2007 118 3.51 9.8 1.6 0.3 9.2

Speaking of injuries, Roemer started the year with a broken pinky which may have played a part in his rise in ERA this year and increase in walks (which is still pretty impressive). Of course, it's also possible he's just been a little hit unlucky (or lucky in 2006) as his other numbers are in line with previous years. Perhaps he's Kevin Slowey II?

James Adkins, LHP, Tennessee
BA Rank: 80
Year Innings ERA K/9 BB/9 HR/9 H/9
2005 127.1 3.32 9.6 3.6 0.6 7.6
2006 106 4.50 9.5 3.6 0.5 8.2
2007 122 2.80 9.8 3.2 0.8 7.7

A pretty consistent track record in college. His slider is supposedly a great pitch so worst case he might just be a LOOGY. Best case he's a crafty lefty.

Sean Morgan, RHP, Tulane
BA Rank: 88
Year Innings ERA K/9 BB/9 HR/9 H/9
2005 36.1 2.72 10.5 7.2 0.2 8.5
2006 118 3.51 9.5 3.0 1.1 7.3
2007 103 4.11 10.7 4.3 0.7 7.8

As you can see Morgan's issue is control. He improved greatly from his freshman year, but it's still a little higher than you'd like. The linked scouting report says his delivery is 'herky-jerky' so if someone could straighten that out you might have something here.

Jess Todd, RHP, Arkansas
BA Rank: 110
Year Innings ERA K/9 BB/9 HR/9 H/9
2007 90.1 2.49 12.4 2.5 0.2 7.7

This is a great point showing the difference in scouting and stats. Look at the line above and look at the line below.

Year Innings ERA K/9 BB/9 HR/9 H/9
2007 105.1 2.91 12.8 2.2 0.1 6.9

The second pitching line this year is David Price who's almost certain to be the #1 pick.

Tommy Hunter, RHP, Alabama
BA Rank: 121
Year Innings ERA K/9 BB/9 HR/9 H/9
2006 117.1 3.30 6.1 1.7 0.6 8.8
2007 107 3.87 8.1 2.9 1.0 8.4

I can't really explain it, but something about Hunter I like (perhaps being 250 lbs at 20). Nothing in the numbers above really jump out, but the scouting report linked seems to indicate there's room for growth in control and stuff and I always like SEC players.

Duke Welker, RHP, Arkansas
BA Rank: 129
Year Innings ERA K/9 BB/9 HR/9 H/9
2007 91.2 3.83 7.2 3.6 0.3 7.8

Arkansas has 3 pitchers that are going to be drafted in the first few rounds. Nick Schmidt is the one most highly regarded, but Jess Todd (above) and Welker both have pitched well enough to be drafted as well.

I spent a delightful half-hour watching scouting video at milb.com.  I haven't got to the pitchers yet, but the high-schoolers Mesoraco (C) and Dominguez (3B) do indeed look very good. The college catchers Arencibia, Canham and Donaldson don't look great in the field.  I would have liked to have seen video of Lucroy. Unfortunately the video for Kozma didn't work and there was none available for Horton.

Addicting isn't it?

In my Sickels' Mock Draft I've pretty much mapped out my strategy.  I think the only college player I'd take in the first round is Beau Mills, and I'm not expecting him to be there if the discussion is any indication.

So I'm looking at Dominguez (3B), Mesoraco (C), Noonan (SS), Ahrens (3B), Smoker (LHP) and Beaven (RHP) with the first two picks (16/21), more or less in that order at this point.  I can't imagine they'd all be gone by 21.

In the supplemental round I'll see if anyone falls to 38/45/56:  perhaps Kozma (SS), Canham (C), Cecil (LHP), and Weathers (RHP).  If not I'll probably go with college pitching:  Poreda, Simmons, Roemer, Savery, and Zimmerman.  I also like Matt Mangini (3B) and Ryan Dent (SS/2B/CF).

After that in rounds 2-5 it'll probably be all college players - I don't want to take anyone that there's a chance they're going to college.

If anyone has any favorites to share it.

Jonathan Mayo from MLB.com is projecting that the Jays will nab Dominguez and Mesoraco at 16 and 21, although that hasn't been updates since the Diamondbacks agreed to terms with Scherzer, whom Mayo had at #6. Indications are that the Jays are highest on Weathers, but that he won't slip past Seattle at 11. Weathers or Dominguez would be great at 16. Personally, I'm not sold on Mesoraco and I'm not entirely convinced that JP won't grab a high school arm with one of these picks, particularly at 21 if he gets a bat at 16.

Sounds like there's a chance Kozma could be available in the supplemental round. If so, he'd be a nice pick -- but no earlier. St. Clair and Arencibia seem like they're on the Jays radar, too. All told, things look promising.

Matt LaPorta is an interesting name who has been linked to the Jays, but he is a Boras client. Is that why you left him off the Sickels list? Also, the BA mock draft has Wieters falling all the way to the Cardinals at 18. Regardless of who represents him, if he is there won't the Jays have to take him at 16.
Pistol - Thursday, May 31 2007 @ 12:06 PM EDT (#168989) #
I just don't believe in LaPorta in the first round and don't expect him to be there after that.

Why Beavan and Smoker but no Bumgarner and Aumont? Is it because they will probably be gone or you just don't think the Jays would have interest?

Are you going for what you think the Jays will do or what they should do? I have a feeling they are taking Kozma at 21 even though I think they should wait it out and see if he's there at 38.

Just to be clear, my outline above is my personal strategy, serving as the Jays SD, for the annual Mock Draft that John Sickels runs.  I really don't expect the Jays to consider HS pitchers.

Smoker & Beavan and not Bumgarner & Aumont is just a personal preference, although I do think Aumont is going to be off the board.

In the 1st round, I too like Beavan, Dominguez, Mesoraco, Ahrens. I would also look at Burgess who has arguably the highest upside in the draft. People complain that he swings and misses too often. But, I found out that one of the possible reasons that he's struggling is that Derek (aka "Operation Shutdown") Bell is instructing him. Only bad things could be expected from that. I might also take a look at Michael Main who has a solid fallback option of being a 5-tool CF. I don't really like Smoker or Noonan in the 1st round.

For the supplemental round, I like Poreda, Kentrail Davis, Justin Jackson, and Arencibia.

Yes, it is addictive.  Ahrens' report doesn't tell me what I need to know about him- how is his plate discipline?.  He does look awkward at short, but he has a good arm.  Noonan looks awkward at short, but not at second.

Updated draft tracker at BA.

Sounds like Mesaroco might go before 16 now.

Mike Green - Thursday, May 31 2007 @ 03:06 PM EDT (#169023) #
If Aumont is indeed available at #16, as BA now projects, the Jays are going to have an interesting decision.
HippyGilmore - Thursday, May 31 2007 @ 03:58 PM EDT (#169032) #
I'm drooling over the prospect of Aumont at #16. If we could pick up Aumont and Weathers, I'd be one happy Jays fan. And the possibility of being able to cheer a Canadian high schooler up through the ranks would be awesome (No offense to Aaron Wideman, but he's no Aumont).
Pistol - Sunday, June 03 2007 @ 08:27 AM EDT (#169152) #
For what it's worth, Keith Law had a mock first round up at ESPN with Noonan and Weathers as the picks.  He seemed to indicate that the Jays were set on Weathers (although had him at 21) and to 'not expect' two HSers in the first round.
