Not much else to say.  One win in five tries including a blowout.  Luckily, the one win featured a nice start by a top prospect.

Tacoma 9    Las Vegas 7

J.P. Arencibia continued his hot streak on Sunday with a double and his 8th homer.  Over his past 10 games, Arencibia is hitting .366/.357/.805.  Yup, a lower OBP than SLG but that's what you get with J.P.

Chris Lubanski also had a pair of hits, including a triple, while Kyle Phillips had two hits of his own.  Luis Figueroa had three while Brett Wallace went 1-for-4 without striking out.

Old Marty McLeary took the hill for the 51s and was pretty brutal, as usual.  He's now 0-4 for Vegas with an ERA of 11.33.  Zach Jackson worked 3 innings allowing just one hit but walked four.

Trenton 13    New Hampshire 2

Ouch.  Luis Perez got rocked in this one, going 5 and allowing seven runs (four earned) on 7 hits and two walks while striking out four.  Boomer Potts (awesome name) and Danny Farquhar each fared as miserably while Tim Collins struck out two in scoreless frame.

Just when virtually everyone had completely written off David Cooper, he started one of the most impressive streaks of his professional career.  Cooper homered again on Sunday to give him five on the year and four in his past 8 games.  His season line still sucks but he's put up an OPS of almost 1.200 in his last ten games.

Darin Mastroianni, Callix Crabbe, and Adam Loewen each reached base twice with a hit and a walk.  Crabbe stole his 12th base.  Loewen's season is starting to look pretty impressive.  Entering today's game his line stood at .268/.366/.440.  Would be a nice story.

Charlotte 3    Dunedin 2 (Game 1)

The D-Jays dropped a double-header on Sunday thanks to a fairly lifeless offense.  Adeiny Hechavarria was 1-for-4 with a double, strikeout, and error (4) while Travis D'Arnaud went 0-for-2 with an RBI.  Tyler Pastornicky was the only other D-Jay of note, singling and stealing his 14th base.

Joel Carreno started and was quite effective going five innings, allowing 2 runs on three hits and four walks while striking out ten.  Alan Farina took the loss, allowing a run in his two frames.

Charlotte 5    Dunedin 3 (Game 2)

Pretty much a carbon copy of the opener.  Yan Gomes had the only two RBI while Hechavarria went 1-for-4 with a double, two strikeouts, error (5), and his second stolen base.  He sure is consistent.  Joe Morgan would love that.  The D-Jays struck out 11 times in 7 innings.  There really isn't much else to say.

Kenny Rodriguez started and was ineffective going 4.2 and allowing four runs on eight hits and four walks.  He struck out three.  His season line stands at a fairly odd 3-1, 7.80 ERA.

Lansing 4    South Bend 3

Three longballs for the Lugnuts today as A.J. Jimenez, Bradley Glenn, and Oliver Dominguez all went yard.  Dominguez's was part of a 2-for-3, 2 RBI day.  I'm getting more and more intrigued by Jimenez by the day.  Despite some struggles of late, his season line sits at a very respectable .314/.355/.430 (not including today).  Couple that with 10 SB and you've got a pretty interesting 20 year-old catcher.

Chad Jenkins continued his string of recent success with a strong outing.  The 2009 first rounder went six and allowed seven hits but walked nobody and didn't allow a run.  He struck out five.  Steve Turnbull worked the 9th for his 12th save.

Three Stars:

3rd Star:
Oliver Dominguez- 2-for-3, R, HR, 2 RBI
2ndStar:  J.P. Arencibia- 2-for-4, R, 2B, HR, RBI
1st Star:  Chad Jenkins- 6 IP, 7 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K

Tim Collins' K rate is really absurd, I hope we get a chance to see this guy in September.

People seem to be enamored with Brett Wallace, especially after the quick start he got off to in the power department. For a guy who supposedly has an advanced approach at the plate he isn't showing much of that in Vegas, and has a 29:4 K:BB ratio in May, and has been even worse over the last 10g (11:0). If people would look at his line and apply the PCL adjustments they might actually stop trying to run Lyle Overbay out of town. I'll point out that Arencibia has a better K:BB than Wallace, and have a suspicion there's going to be a lot of disappointment when Wallace makes the majors.

Wallace' revered "approach at the plate" is more geared towards his advanced hitting, not his plate discipline.  The advanced approach is in reference to his projection as a potential .300+ hitter (rare for a 1B).  If you look. he's never actually had any ridiculous BB/K rates in the minors.  He's been striking out more lately, but its probably just a reflection of them wanting him to be aggressive.

Cooper is sounding more and more like the next Overbay. :)

Yup, a lower OBP than SLG but that's what you get with J.P.

Most players have a lower on-base than slugging. ;)

Some minor league promotions courtesy of the fisher cats twitter:

I wonder if  those promotions are to help Las vegas defence and pitchers psyche - Also, maybe Sierra is about

ready to play, finally?

Given their ages (26 for Calderone, 25 for Diaz), and given their good seasons so far, it makes sense to choose those two as the first NH promotions of the year.   The other NH prospects (Thames etc) are a bit younger or -- in the case of Loewen -- less experienced at the AA level, so the Jays will let them stay longer at New Hampshire before promoting them.  Diaz has improved steadily at the AA level since his first taste of it in 2008.   He had a brief spin at Vegas last year, and didn't hit worth a nickel, but he should be better this time.  Of course the unspoken question is:  does this pave the way for Hech at New Hampshire?   Answer:  maybe it does, but not immediately.

Two things to like about Jonathan Diaz this season:  an OBP of .386 and a BB:K ratio of 25:13.   Useful attributes for a SS who has no power, and could yet provide him with some kind of ML future, even if just as a utility guy.

Aw, man.  Error charged to Braden.  I obviously meant Average.

If they don't, they're like, Cesar Izturis or something.

I checked the roster on Vegas and Jesus Merchan and Aaron Mathews are on the 7 day DL, I don't how long they have been on the DL for but this makes sense with the promotions of Diaz and Calderone.

Not sure if this has been posted before, but Loewen's improving hitting line had me curious about the most recent success in pitcher turned batter, Mr. Rick Ankiel, and how he did in the minors after making the switch.

Although he had a decent first 2 years with the Cards (~270/330/550), his numbers in the minors were pretty poor, aside from some serious power.  He spend all of 2007 in AAA and posted his best year in the minors (267/314/568).  882 OPS was completely power driven.

Loewen is putting up much better numbers.

This has been interesting, seeing pitchers become hitters and hitters become pitchers (Sergio Santos - 0.48 ERA over 18 2/3 IP this season for the ChiSox).

At one time it was viewed as almost a brick wall - converting is something that Babe Ruth did but no one else. Wonder how many other guys are going to look seriously at it?

Don't forget Dave Stieb.
Maldoff - Monday, May 31 2010 @ 02:21 PM EDT (#215890) #

Not to be "Debbie Downer", but Loewen currently sports an usually high BABIP of .350 (give or take my bad math). Some of those hits should stop dropping and his average will likely be effected - although I certainly hope not!

On another note, does anyone have a scouting report on Aaron Loup? He was a 9th round pick last year who has pitched quite well thus far in Lansing.

There are a couple of Memorial Day matinees underway.  Drabek's got a 4 hit shutout going against the Yankees (er Thunder).  Just practising.

Brian Dopirak came in as a defensive sub in the 4th for Kyle Phillips...at third base!

Wassupwitdat?

Adam Calderone is 3-3 with a home run in his first AAA game of the season.

Brad Mills has pitched a 7 inning, 2 hitter, one of which was a solo home run.  Looks like his good start was a few days too late.  Mills did have 5 walks.
